The Hindu30-05-2025

As many as 17 Maoist cadres and militia members from the Dandakaranya forest region in neighbouring Chhattisgarh have returned to the mainstream by turning themselves in before the police in Kothagudem town on Friday, police said.
Among them are two Area Committee Members (ACMs), four party members, and 11 militia members, all hailing from the restive south Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.
According to police, 282 Maoists of various cadres mostly from the Maoist-affected Bijapur and Sukma districts of Chhattisgarh have surrendered before the Bhadradri Kothagudem district police so far this year.
One of the main factors that prompted them to abjure the path of violence and return to the mainstream is the prompt implementation of welfare measures under the 'Operation Cheyutha' programme of the district police for rehabilitation of the surrendered Maoists, police said.
Addressing the media in Kothagudem, Superintendent of Police B. Rohit Raju said, 'At present CPI (Maoist) cadres are moving in the forested stretch along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.'
'Those residing in these border villages should desist from extending any cooperation to Maoists. They should alert the police if they notice any movement of the cadres of the outlawed organisation,' the SP added.

Delhi police nab 2 in Rs 10 cr stock investment scam

New Delhi: A social media chat turned into a costly ordeal for a Delhi resident, ultimately exposing a stock investment scam operated from a hotel in Nepal, with fraudulent transactions exceeding Rs 10 crore in just one month, an official said on Monday. Two people, Shashi Pratap Singh (28), a BBA graduate and Nihal Pandey (27), who holds an MCA degree, have been apprehended from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur in this regard, the police official said. Shashi disclosed that Nihal had taken him to Nepal, from where these phoney operations were being conducted. Nihal revealed that a person had tasked him with arranging multiple bank accounts for laundering the defrauded money. 'Nihal had taken Shashi to Nepal, where they stayed in a hotel with three others and handed over SIM cards and banking credentials to a person,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said. He added that in return, Shashi was promised a 1.5 per cent commission on transactions and reportedly received Rs 8–10 lakh in cash. Police said transactions totalling Rs 10.40 crore were conducted over a month using just one private bank account. 'The case came to light when complainant Sachin Kumar Tomar approached the police after being defrauded of Rs 8.15 lakh. He alleged that he was lured into investing in a fraudulent online trading platform by a woman named Sakshi Yadav, whom he met on social media,' Gautam said. She persuaded the victim to open a trading account and added him to a messaging group, claiming it was operated by her uncle and an associate named Rakesh, he said. Tomar deposited Rs 8.15 lakh into bank accounts. However, when he attempted to withdraw the returns on his 'profits,' the transactions failed, and his access was blocked. A case was registered, and investigators found that Rs 5.75 lakh of the cheated funds had been transferred to a private bank account. Further probe revealed the account was jointly held by Shashi and his father, Ramashankar Singh, the DCP said. 'Although the father claimed no knowledge of the transactions, he admitted to being a joint account holder. Shashi was arrested following sustained interrogation,' an officer said, adding that Nihal was also arrested from Gorakhpur. The gang operated by first contacting potential victims through social media platforms and posed as financial experts. They then lured victims with the promise of high returns on stock market investments. Initially, small profits were shown to build trust. As soon as larger investments were made, victims were blocked or told their accounts were frozen due to fictitious compliance execute this fraud on a large scale, the accused needed multiple bank accounts and SIM cards, which they obtained by luring people with cash incentives, the officer said.

CHENNAI: As the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-linked annual power tariff revision for 2025-26 kicks in on Tuesday, as per the orders issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) on Monday, the state government has announced that it will absorb Rs 519.84 crore additional cost per year to protect 2.83 crore power consumers, including households and small-scale industries, from incurring higher power tariff. The order issued by TNERC has increased energy charges, fixed charges, and demand charges for all categories of consumers at 3.16% as expected, which is the escalation rate of CPI from April 2024 to April 2025. Soon after the order was issued, a release by Minister for Electricity SS Sivasankar said, as assured earlier by Chief Minister MK Stalin, the increase in tariff will be fully absorbed by the government for 2.42 domestic consumers for all consumption slabs. The other category of users whose tariff hike will be borne by the government includes low-tension industries with a sanctioned load of up to 50 kW, small commercial establishments using up to 500 units of power bimonthly, cottage and micro industries, and power looms. The release clarified that free power of 100 units for domestic consumers, 1,000 units for power looms, and free power for huts will continue.
