Gas is a gamble — and WA just doubled down
The message is clear: WA is doubling down on gas. But for many West Australians, this is starting to feel like a gamble with high stakes and few winners. It might be good for energy giants and shareholders, but for households, small businesses, and the state's long-term prosperity, the risks are mounting.
We've been here before. When the mining boom collapsed around 2014, the pain wasn't limited to the Pilbara or Goldfields. Perth's housing market slumped, fly-in fly-out jobs disappeared, and state revenues fell off a cliff. The entire economy had been hitched to global commodities—and when prices crashed, so did WA's growth.
Now, the same pattern is repeating. WA is a gas heavyweight—exporting 47 million tonnes of LNG last year and supplying around 60 per cent of Australia's gas. Yet despite its vast reserves and a 15 per cent domestic reservation policy, local households are still facing higher gas prices, driven not by local scarcity but by exposure to international markets.
Since 2020, wholesale gas prices in WA have tripled, and consumers now face some of the highest retail gas prices in the country. If one of the world's most gas-rich jurisdictions—backed by a domestic reservation—can't deliver affordable gas to its own people, then the system clearly isn't working in the public interest. It's a glaring contradiction: vast local supply, a legislated carve-out, and yet rising costs for the very people the policy was meant to protect.
International energy markets are growing more volatile, not less. Global demand is softening, supply is ramping up, and price swings driven by conflict or speculation are becoming the norm. Key buyers like Japan are cutting back their LNG imports whilst on-selling around half the gas we sell them, a sign that demand is not what it once was. China's LNG imports have fluctuated significantly since 2020.
And yet, instead of planning for a diversified future, WA is entrenching its reliance on gas. The approval of the North West Shelf extension to 2070 isn't just a regulatory tick—it's a signal to markets, governments and financial institutions that WA intends to stay in the gas game for the long haul. That decision will direct capital, infrastructure and political energy toward propping up a sector that faces deep structural risk—not just from climate constraints, but from basic economics.
The danger isn't only environmental. It's economic. Every new dollar committed to gas is a dollar not invested in emerging industries like clean energy manufacturing, critical minerals processing, green hydrogen, green ammonia or green iron. While other states and countries build competitive advantage in renewables and advanced manufacturing, WA is backing an industry that's losing momentum and market certainty.
This is the real missed opportunity. WA has what it takes to lead in the clean economy—land, labour, minerals, world-class ports and skilled workers. But for too long, successive governments have prioritised resource exports over building sovereign capability. The result is a lopsided economy, vulnerable to global shocks, and increasingly disconnected from where the world is heading.

Australian energy giant ditches US plant as Trump attacks green power
Woodside, the largest Australian oil and gas company, has abandoned plans to build a lower-carbon fuels plant in the United States as energy users and producers reel from Donald Trump's decision to slash tax breaks for green technologies. The Perth-based energy giant told investors on Wednesday it would take a $US140 million ($214 million) profit hit after deciding to walk away from the H2OK liquid hydrogen project it had been planning in Oklahoma, blaming the rising cost of making cleaner hydrogen and weaker-than-expected customer demand. 'We have made the decision to exit the H2OK project, demonstrating our disciplined approach to portfolio management,' Woodside chief executive Meg O'Neill said on Wednesday. Woodside, a producer of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), is pursuing the development of lower-carbon hydrogen as part of its climate transition strategy. Because hydrogen emits only water vapour when burned, it is considered by many to be a promising climate-friendly energy source that could eventually substitute fossil fuels and help clean up heavy-polluting industries, as long as it is made using low- or zero-carbon energy sources. Woodside's H2OK would have used an electrolyser, powered by the electricity grid, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. However, Woodside announced it was pausing the H2OK project in January, shortly after Donald Trump's return to the White House. It also scrapped a separate plan to build a concentrated solar thermal energy facility in California through a partnership with Heliogen, a company backed by billionaire Bill Gates. While not directly attributing those decisions to Trump's energy agenda, Woodside at the time said it needed to consider the implications of the administration's pledge to dismantle support for US clean energy investments, including halting the disbursement of funds from the $567 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which had been offering generous tax breaks for renewable developers. This month, Trump secured the passage of a giant tax and domestic policy bill through Congress, which will make it cheaper and easier for companies to drill and produce fossil fuels, while cutting funding for electric cars and wind and solar farms. Woodside remains committed to one clean energy investment in the US, the Beaumont lower-carbon ammonia project in Texas. The project was 95 per cent completed as of June 30, the company said.

Aussie shares gain as Japan secures US trade deal
The local bourse has moved higher as markets react to US President Donald Trump's announcement of a trade deal with Japan. About midday on Wednesday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 32.9 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 8,714.4, while the broader All Ordinaries had gained 36.1 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 8,976.1. In a post to Truth Social, Mr Trump announced the trade deal would result in Japan investing $76 billion into the US, lifting crude oil and Nikkei's 225 index. While the details of the trade deal were limited and there might be some disagreement from the Japanese side, its impact appeared to be positive, IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said. "Reaching an agreement there would significantly help to defuse the impact and lessen the importance of the August 1 deadline," he said on Wednesday. In Australia, iron ore miners continued to extend gains for the third session this week, bolstered by reforms to China's steel industry. The majority of miners were all in the green with BHP gaining 1.0 per cent, Rio Tinto climbing 2.2 per cent and Fortescue up 1.8 per cent. All four of the big retail banks were in the green, with CBA up 0.1 per cent, NAB edging 0.04 per cent higher, Westpac gaining 0.9 per cent and ANZ climbing 1.1 per cent. In the energy sector, Woodside had climbed 1.7 per cent after Australia's largest oil and gas producer announced second-quarter production was up two per cent from the first quarter. Woodside also announced its $16 billion Scarborough project gas project 375km off the coast of Western Australia was 86 per cent complete and on-track to deliver its first LNG cargo in the second half of 2026. Ampol had grown 3.5 per cent as the petrol company said its convenience retail business had continued its track record of growing earnings in the first half. Karoon Energy rose 0.7 per cent as the Brazil-focused oil and gas producer announced CEO Julian Fowles would depart by mid-2026. Paladin Energy was down 9.2 per cent as the uranium miner announced a 33 per cent quarter-on-quarter rise in production at its Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia. In health care, Telix Pharmaceuticals had slid 12.1 per cent as the radiopharmaceutical company announced shares worth $1 million would be released from voluntary escrow next week. The Australian dollar was buying 65.59 US cents, from 65.14 US cents about 5pm on Tuesday.
