Prime suspect in horrific cold case murder of 23-year-old woman is mysteriously found dead in Thailand

Daily Mail3 days ago
The suspected killer of a young woman whose partially burned body was found in bushland in NSW more than 20 years ago has been found dead in Thailand.
Accused serial rapist and murderer Kevin Steven Correll, 69, died while on holiday in the South East Asian country last week.
Correll was identified by police as the most likely to have killed 23-year-old car saleswoman Rachelle Childs on June 8 in 2001.
Police did not charge anyone over her murder after the early investigation was repeatedly botched.
Ms Child's body was found dumped in bushland in Gerroa, south of Sydney, about 100km away from her home.
Unleaded petrol had been poured over her face and other parts of her body in what had been an apparent attempt to hide DNA evidence.
She was found partially undressed and was likely either smothered or strangled to death.
Authorities in Thailand have said the details surrounding the death of Correll remain a mystery.
A member of Correll's family said police turned up to his son Mitchell's house to inform them an autopsy that was already underway.
'Not sorry he's gone just sorry that Rachelle's family aren't going to get the justice that they so deserve,' they told the Daily Telegraph.
His estranged daughter, Jazz, found out her father was dead after speaking to her brother on the phone Saturday.
'I feel sad for his many victims,' she told the publication.
Consular assistance is being provided to Correll's family in Australia, a DFAT spokesman confirmed.
Many believe the initial police investigation into Ms Child's death had been thoroughly mishandled by local police before they handed it off to homicide detectives.
Local police lost a crucial piece of CCTV footage which showed Ms Childs with what could have been her murderer at a petrol station on the night of her death.
Other mistakes by the police unit included one officer who contaminated DNA found on a bedsheet in her car and others who did not collect her phone records properly.
Correll was Ms Child's boss at the used car dealership, Camden Holden, where they both worked when she died.
He was voluntarily questioned on three occasions by police regarding her death but detectives were unable to gather enough evidence to convict him.
This is despite the fact that his alibi for the night of Ms Child's death could not be corroborated.
Correll had previously been in court accused of rape.
In once incident in the 1980s a woman's screams attracted police, who found him with his pants down, and she told them she was being assaulted.
Correll was charged but a jury found him not guilty later in court.
He had three other women also accused him of rape in separate incidents but was found not guilty in court.
In the 1980s personal attacks against alleged victims in the witness box over their clothing or dating history was common.
Another of his accusers said he had threatened her with a knife and threatened to kill her children.
Correll was one of the last people to see Ms Childs alive when she left work the day before her death.
Other employees recalled her telling them she was going to meet up with someone at the Bargo Hotel that evening but she did not say who it was.
There was no CCTV inside the hotel and police did not manage to question everyone who was there on that night.
After the meet Ms Childs rang her sister for a brief chat which was the last anybody ever heard from her.
A motorist who was driving along the road where Ms Childs was found recalled to police having seen a 1978 Holden Commodore matching the description of the one she owned.
The car was parked off the highway about 200m away from where Ms Childs was found the following day around 10.20pm on June 7.
Another witness recalled seeing the car later with its boot open in the same location at 11pm.
They told police there had been one person standing up next to the car while a second person was lying on the ground.
Correll's alibi was that he drove from Camden to Campbelltown to meet his partner on June 7.
He had been in a three-month long-distance relationship with a Thai woman when he died.

Kaylee Goncalves' sister taunts 'basic' Bryan Kohberger with slew of blistering insults after snapping 'Sit up straight when I talk to you!'

The sister of Kaylee Goncalves who was murdered by Bryan Kohberger ripped her sibling's killer apart while delivering a blistering impact statement in court. Speaking at Kohberger's sentencing in Boise, Idaho, Alivea Goncalves ordered the quadruple murderer to 'sit up straight when I talk to you'. Watching him intently, Alivea said: 'I wont stand her and give you what you want. I wont give you tears instead. I will call you what you are: sociopath, psychopath, murderer.' 'The truth is you're basic. You're a textbook case as insecurity disguised as control. You spent months preparing and still all it took was my sister and a sheath. 'You're as dumb as they come. Stupid, dumb, weak, dirty', before she then hit him with the very same questions that Kohberger posed in a survey on Reddit as part of his criminology degree at DeSales University. She went on to blast Kohberger's past and all his failings, including unanswered questions in the Idaho murder case. Alivea told Kohberger he was a 'delusional, pathetic, hypochondriadic loser' who 'thought you were so much better than everyone else.' In a damning conclusion, she added: 'If you hadn't attacked them in your sleep like a pedophile, Kaylee would have kicked your f****** ass.' The courtroom erupted in clapping at the end of Alivea's statement. Koberger remained emotionless throughout. Her father Steve turned to face his daughter's killer prior to Alivea's statement, and said they all refer to him as BK, a mocking nickname. He said: 'Today you have no name. Even the media just called you BK. That's all you are. 'A Master's degree? You're a joke, a complete joke. But we took this disaster and we did what we could He read a statement from his phone where he stared down Kohberger, telling him 'you picked the wrong family and we are laughing at you'. Goncalves said that Kohberger united everyone 'in our disgust, in our love for these children', while adding the family would forget him after today. Kohberger didn't show a flicker of emotion as the statement was directed at him. Kaylee's mother Kristi also spoke to Kohberger, telling him he left a 'trail of devastation far beyond that house'. She cited her disappointment that he would not be facing a firing squad, but warned that 'your fellow inmates are anxiously awaiting your arrival' The hearing is the final chance for the 30-year-old PhD candidate to reveal why he walked into a house in Moscow and stabbed them in their beds.

‘Killer who shot dead American Idol exec & husband called 911 in home pretending to be them' 4 days before bodies found

A SUSPECTED shooter called 911 and pretended to be American Idol executive Robin Kaye and her husband after murdering them, prosecutors have claimed. It took four days for cops to find the bodies of Kaye and her songwriter husband Thomas Deluca, both 70, despite them directly speaking with 22-year-old suspect Raymond Boodarian. 6 6 On July 10 at around 4 pm, cops got a 911 call from the couple's neighbor, who said they thought they saw someone breaking into their $3.4 million mansion in Los Angeles, California. Just 40 minutes later, first responders got a second call from a man claiming to be a resident, and he told the operator that they didn't need help from police. At some point during the call, the dispatcher heard someone say "Please don't shoot me" and deployed officers, a search warrant affidavit filed by the Los Angeles Police Department says. According to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, the second call was placed by the suspect, who identified himself at some point in the conversation, he told reporters at a briefing on Monday. Jennifer Forkish, the LAPD communications director, said cops raced to the scene and that they deployed a police airship known as Air 16 to survey the property. However, first responders couldn't get into the property because the entrances were locked and no one, including the neighbor, was answering their calls, Forkish said. Officers in the helicopter also couldn't see any sign that a break-in had taken place, so they left the home. Hochman has not explained how or why Boodarian gave his full name. It wasn't until June 14 at around 2:30 pm that officers would find Kaye and Deluca's bodies during a wellness check. A friend of the couple said they hadn't heard from them in several days and gave cops a key card to get inside the wall surrounding their property. American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and husband Thomas Deluca both 'murdered inside LA home' When they came to the doors, cops saw signs that something was wrong and burst through a glass window to get inside. Kaye and Deluca were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head. Boodarian was arrested the following day. Investigators found what they believe to be the murder weapon and said it was the couple's own gun. 6 6 6 COMMUNITY TERROR After Boodarian was cuffed, it was revealed he had a violent criminal history, and residents were furious that he was allowed to roam the streets. The suspect, who is from Encino and lived a 13 minute drive from the couple, was charged with battery and exhibiting a deadly weapon over a year before his latest arrest. However, he was deemed mentally incompetent, and the charges were dropped, court documents seen by KABC show. The suspect was also charged with brandishing a knife and making threats against his stepfather in 2023, as well as battery against his mother and sister in 2024. But those charges were also dismissed. Kaye and Deluca's home was broken into just weeks before they were attacked, and they had tried to crack down on security to prevent any other incidents, according to friends of the couple. Furious community members have begged for a crackdown on crime and opened up about disturbing red flags they saw in the suspect. One person living in the neighborhood said that Boodarian would "sit in front of my friend's house just staring and smiling," according to the New York Post. "He did that on multiple occasions, sometimes in his own house, just looking out the window and smiling." Boodarian has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree burglary, and he's being held without bail in a Los Angeles correctional facility. His next court appearance has been scheduled for August 20.
