Eni unveils plant for chemical recycling of plastic waste
The technology, dubbed 'Hoop', makes it possible to convert mixed plastic waste into a material that can be used to produce new plastic materials suitable for all applications, including food contact packaging and pharmaceutical packaging.
The move is part of a strategy of the state-controlled group to overhaul its loss-making chemical business.
A build-up of production capacity in China and high energy and raw material costs have put European petrochemical producers under unprecedented pressure, prompting groups including Eni, TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA), opens new tab and BP (BP.L), opens new tab to shut down old plants or put assets up for sale.
Eni said last year it would invest 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) by 2029 to turn around its chemicals business, which accumulated 3 billion euros in losses in the last five years.
The revamp hinges on starting new activities including plastic recycling, bio-refining and energy storage and shutting down several primary petrochemicals plants including steam crackers.
Eni plans in the next few years to set up a new plant based on the 'Hoop' technology in Priolo, Sicily, where it will shut a steam cracker by the end of this year.
"A final investment decision on the new recycling plant in Priolo could come next year," Versalis Chief Executive Officer Adriano Alfani said at an event to inaugurate the demo plant in Mantova.
Versalis' new technology was developed through a joint project with Italian engineering firm S.R.S. (Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo), leading to a system that achieves high material recovery yields and offers flexibility in terms of input materials.

Italy's Meloni says it's a 'positive' trade deal was reached but needs to see details
ROME, July 27 (Reuters) - Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday it is "positive" a trade deal has been reached between the European Union and the United States, adding, however, that she needs to see the details. Washington struck a framework trade deal with the EU imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods. "I consider it positive that there is an agreement, but if I don't see the details I am not able to judge it in the best way," Meloni told journalists on the sidelines of a meeting in Addis Ababa. Italy is one of the biggest European exporters to the U.S., with a trade surplus of more than 40 billion euros. The Italian government, led by a nationalist coalition, had urged its European partners to avoid a direct clash between the two sides of the Atlantic. In a statement, Meloni said that the agreement "ensures stability", adding that the 15% "is sustainable, especially if this percentage is not added to previous duties, as was originally planned." "We are ready to activate support measures at the national level, but we ask that they also be activated at the European level for sectors that will be particularly affected by US tariff measures," she added. The statement was also signed by the leaders of the other two coalition parties: Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini of the League.

Plan for large solar farm on Herefordshire farmland moves closer
Plans for a 40-hectare solar farm on farmland in Herefordshire have moved a step proposed farm, set to generate up to 20MW of power, would cover two areas of farmland between Acton Green and Acton Beauchamp, south-east of Sinton's End Solar Farm said the site would include inverter and transformer stations and a substation for the grid connection, as well as 2.4m-high perimeter Council has received a full planning application for the scheme, with comments on the proposals being accepted until 21 August. Following a preliminary application in 2022 to ascertain whether a full environmental impact assessment would be required for its plan, on a slightly larger site, the firm was told an assessment would be this was later overruled following an appeal to then communities secretary Michael local authority received the current planning application for the Sinton's End development just before Christmas but has only just published application explains that income from the solar farm "will make an important contribution to the continued viability of the farm holding, whilst allowing sheep to graze under the panels".The farm's visual impact was also "anticipated to be temporary and reversible, albeit long-term" given the scheme's planned 40-year project would be developed by RE Projects Development Ltd, an "experienced developer of renewable and low-carbon energy projects in the UK," the application added. Pirelli's Latest High-Performance Tire Is 70% Recycled Materials – But Only Available For One Car

A spin in the right direction While drivers tend to overlook tires until they need to be replaced, companies like Pirelli obsess over them. Constantly improving and iterating, Pirelli is now introducing a tire to market that features nearly three-quarters recycled components, suggesting that the future of high-performance tires can utilize used materials without compromising performance. The downside is that, at least for its first recycled tire, Pirelli is limiting production to a single tire size, which was developed specifically for a single vehicle. It was also developed as an OEM tire, and it's unclear whether Pirelli will produce them for the aftermarket. Pirelli P Zero tire — Source: Pirelli All about the 70% recycled Pirelli P Zero This new tire is part of Pirelli's commitment to making all natural rubber used in its European factories Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified by 2026. The tire maker previously released an FSC-certified tire in 2021. FSC certification is specific to the rubber used in the tire, which has to be certified as natural rubber and is an attestation that Pirelli exercised 'responsible management' of its natural rubber supply chain from plantation to production. In addition to FSC-certified rubber, the new P Zero utilizes recycled steel, which the company reclaimed in part from melted scrap metal. Rice husk-derived silica was also used in the P Zero, as the silica is a byproduct of rice production and is used in the P Zero's tread for enhanced handling in wet conditions. End-of-life tires were also included. To make the tires black, Pirelli used pyrolysis oil from scrap tires, which is obtained via a process of rapid heating and cooling that essentially extracts the oils from the used tires. The same pyrolysis oil derivative was used in the tire polymers. Finally, plant-based bio-resins help optimize dry and wet performance for the new P Zero. If you want the new P Zero, you'll need a Range Rover Developed for JLR (Jaguar Land Rover), Pirelli states that the new tire will only be available in a 22-inch wheel size. The mostly-recycled P Zero will 'initially be available on selected' Range Rover vehicles, but it's unclear whether the tire will be an optional add-on for buyers or if it will be standard for Range Rovers with 22-inch wheels. It's not the first collaboration between JLR and Pirelli, either. In 2024, JLR equipped some of its cars with Pirelli tires that contained 110 percent FSC-certified natural rubber. The new P Zeros will feature FSC markings and a 'distinctive logo' denoting that the tires contain more than 50 percent bio-based recycled materials, which is verified by the third-party certification body Bureau Veritas. Range Rover Evoque — Source: Jaguar Land Rover Final thoughts There's no doubt Pirelli ran this tire through its paces, both virtually in its design and development phase as well as in real-world testing. If any company has mastered high-performance tire manufacturing, it's Pirelli. Even so, it's unclear how recycled materials will hold up over the long term, but if all goes well, we could be looking at a breakthrough in the future of tires.
