Ulster's Scott Wilson joins Ireland squad for summer tour

The 4201-07-2025
ULSTER'S SCOTT WILSON has joined Paul O'Connell's Ireland squad ahead of the upcoming summer Tests against Georgia and Portugal.
The prop is the 13th uncapped player in O'Connell's 33-man squad. The 22-year-old tighthead played 19 times for Ulster this season and was part of the Emerging Ireland squad who toured South Africa last October.
Ireland fly to Tbilisi tomorrow before Saturday's game against Georgia, and then take on Portugal in Lisbon seven days later.
Earlier today it was confirmed both games will be broadcast live on Virgin Media.
Defence coach Denis Leamy also confirmed that both Tom Ahern and Calvin Nash are on track to feature following injury.
Uncapped Munster lock Ahern sat out training over the weekend due to a tight hamstring.
'Tom is good to go. He's fit and he's ready to go,' Leamy said.

'Tom has progressed hugely over the last couple of years and he's put in some excellent performances for Munster. So he's a guy we have high hopes for and absolutely, hopefully, he'll get game time and do really well. He's such a promising player, I've no doubt he can do that.'
Leamy said the aim of the tour is to give some fresh faces a taste of international rugby, while striving to play 'the Irish way'.
'I think it's about implementing old and new into the Irish gameplan and playing the Irish way and seeing how players do in this environment and how they can produce big efforts and big performances.
'So it's about building that catalogue of experience with those players and giving them a feel of what Test rugby looks like.
'It will be very, very similar if not the same (to when Andy Farrell is in charge). So that's the plan, to play the really Irish way and to try and do it as well as we can.
'Obviously we're missing a big chunk of the players who have gone to Australia with the Lions but it's a great opportunity for the boys coming in to show what they can do and just build on some of the things that have (been) done to date.'

Mayo star Mullin becomes latest Irish player to sign new AFL deal

Mayo star Oisín Mullin has signed a new two-year contract with AFL club Geelong, extending his time with the Victoria outfit to at least the end of 2027. The 25-year-old has been outstanding this season and has played 18 games so far. The former two-time Young Footballer of the Year has been with the club since late 2022. 'Oisín has shown enormous growth in a short space of time and continues to impress us with his work ethic and willingness to learn,' said Geelong Cats Executive General Manager of Football Andrew Mackie. 'As with all our Irish players, we understand the enormity of the decision to move to Australia, we love having Oisín as part of our program and we can't wait to see him play an important role for us over the next two years and beyond.' Geelong currently have two other Irish players at the club in Kerry's Mark O'Connor and Cillian Burke. The news comes a few days after Derry's Callum Brown extended his stay with GWS Giants. The forward signed a new three-year deal, recommitting to the club until at least the end of the 2028 AFL season. The former Derry minor joined in late 2018 and enjoyed a breakout year in 2023. He has notched 58 games and 61 goals. 'Callum's journey is one of the great success stories from where he's come from to now being a really solid contributor to our side,' said the club's Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney. 'He arrived at the club as a teenager from Ireland with very little exposure to AFL, but what he's achieved through his work ethic, commitment and natural ability has been remarkable. 'He's playing some really good footy at the moment and hitting the scoreboard for us which adds another dynamic to our forward line. 'We know he's got great capability to provide a real X-factor and it's pleasing to have him locked away for another three years.'

Irish racehorse training great Edward O'Grady has died aged 75

LEADING NATIONAL HUNT trainer Edward O'Grady died yesterday, his family has announced. O'Grady trained a whole host of top-class horses over the course of his long and illustrious career and for a long time was the leading Irish trainer at the Cheltenham Festival where he saddled 18 winners, the first being Mr Midland in the 1974 National Hunt Chase. A statement released by his family through Horse Racing Ireland read: 'It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Edward O'Grady, who passed away peacefully yesterday evening at St James's Hospital (in Dublin), surrounded by his family. 'Edward was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also one of the most respected and successful racehorse trainers of his generation. 'Over the course of an extraordinary career that spanned more than five decades, Edward trained just shy of 1,700 winners under rules. His name became synonymous with Irish National Hunt racing, and he was a formidable force at Cheltenham and across the racing world. Advertisement 'Beyond the winners and the headlines, Edward was a man of deep intelligence, sharp wit, and remarkable warmth. He had friends on every continent, a story for every occasion, and a lifelong passion for the sport, the hunting field and everything equestrian. 'Funeral details will be announced in due course.' Perhaps the most talented horse to pass through O'Grady's hands was Golden Cygnet, a brilliant winner of the 1978 Supreme Novices' Hurdle but fatally injured in the Scottish Champion Hurdle the following month. More recent Festival winners for O'Grady include Pizarro, who landed the 2002 Champion Bumper in the hands of top Flat jockey Jamie Spencer, and the 2003 Supreme scorer Back In Front. Away from Cheltenham, O'Grady saddled Sound Man to win successive runnings of the Tingle Creek at Sandown in 1995 and 1996, while his final Grade One winner was Cash And Go in the Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival in 2011. Other top-class horses he trained include 2002 Irish Champion Hurdle winner Ned Kelly and Nick Dundee, who both carried the colours of Coolmore supremo John Magnier.
