Beauty and the Geek star forced to deny 'upsetting' false murder rumour

Metro6 days ago

A former contestant on Australian reality TV show Beauty and the Geek has had to clear up rumours that she was involved in a murder.
On Thursday, a man's body was discovered at a property in the city of Port Lincoln after police and emergency services were called at around 3.25pm following reports of a small fire.
A 34-year-old woman – who is believed to have known the man – was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder, South Australia Police stated in a press release.
Following the report, reality TV star Kiera Johnstone, 26, posted a lengthy statement on social media stressing that she was not the woman who was arrested.
It had previously been reported in publications including Daily Mail Australia that the woman charged with murder is a former star of Beauty and the Geek.
Johnstone, who won the show in 2021, wrote on her Instagram Stories: 'Hi everyone. A former contestant from Beauty and the Geek has been charged with a very serious crime.
'Although no names have been released, for reasons beyond my understanding, there has been speculation online suggesting that I am involved.'
She said she wanted to be 'absolutely clear' that she was 'not involved in any way' and has not been charged with a crime.
'I have literally never even had a parking fine. The allegations being discussed have nothing to do with me, and the fact that I even need to say this is incredibly upsetting,' she continued.
'It's deeply disturbing to see people spreading false information, making assumptions and sharing screenshots.
Johnstone said that she 'understands the internet can be quick to judge' but the online speculation had been 'damaging and invasive.'
'If you are part of the group fuelling this – sharing, gossiping or silently watching – I ask you to please stop,' she urged.
'This is not entertainment. This is a serious situation that involves real victims. you're literally sick if you think this is at all funny. More Trending
'As this has nothing to do with me, this will be the only time I speak on the matter.
'Thank you to those who reached out with kindness and common sense.'
In the department's press release, South Australia Police outlined: 'Police believe both the man and woman are known to each other and there are no community safety concerns.'
The woman has been refused bail and remains in custody. It has been reported that the man's cause of death has not yet been determined.

Sex cult brainwashed me into being a ‘bride' for a rapist… I thought he was God & was sucked in with love-bomb tactics

Liz travelled to South Korea to meet the cult's leader in prison 'DEEPLY DECIEVED' Sex cult brainwashed me into being a 'bride' for a rapist… I thought he was God & was sucked in with love-bomb tactics Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LIZ Cameron, 32, is a health sector project manager and author. she lives in Canberra, Australia. 'As I walked out of the bookshop, a smiling woman approached. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 Liz Cameron is sharing her story to help others leave cults 4 Liz taking part in a 'heavenly bride' fashion show organised by the church She was a foreign student studying Australian culture, she explained, and asked if I'd mind completing a survey. It was January 2011 and I was a shy, insecure 18 year old just starting my gap year. I had no idea she was from a cult – and that I'd get sucked in. I took the pen from the girl, who said her name was Yujun. The questions were easy, from what I liked about Australia to my religion, so I gave my answers then said goodbye, thinking no more of it. A week later, Yujun emailed more questions about my faith, as I'd said I was Christian. She told me my answers showed I was 'beautiful', which made me feel good. The next week, I went to her home for tea with her and her housemates. That was the start of the love-bombing – the hugs when I arrived for meals, their joy at me joining Bible sessions. Seeing how happy they were made me want to feel that way, too, so within a few months, I was getting up at 5am to pray, followed by a 6am service at their house and hours of Bible reading. Inside a 'mind-controlling' CULT which 'forced mum and daughter to hit each other' and chose Fiji as the 'promised land' My mum started to worry, but I reassured her I was fine. As the brainwashing took hold, the girls told me they belonged to Sarang Church and that its founder, Pastor Joshua, had been falsely imprisoned in South Korea because of his faith. Searching for information on him or the church was forbidden, though. I accepted this without question, even taking part in a 'heavenly bride' fashion show organised by the church. In September 2011, they revealed Pastor Joshua – also called Jung Myung-seok or SSN – was the Messiah. I was ecstatic when SSN wrote to me from prison to say he loved me, and I dreamed of being chosen to be a 'Faith Star' – one of his brides on Earth. I moved out of my parents' house that November to live with the group. I no longer saw any of my old friends, as the church had become my life. When my mum tried to show me research on the church in January 2012, I ran away, terrified – I'd been taught that even looking at it would be 'spiritual suicide'. 4 Liz visited South Korea to meet SSN in prison 4 Liz on the Providence Church trip to South Korea Another time, when my dad came to the house to see me, my housemate hid me in the back of a car and drove away, because nothing was more important than being spiritually pure. A few weeks later, a group of us flew to South Korea to meet SSN and, waiting in the prison, I was so nervous. Suddenly, there he was. He said how happy he was to see us, while I said in stilted Korean: 'I love you.' Deep down, I didn't actually feel any love during our meeting, but I blamed myself and prayed harder. Back home, I received letters from SSN, which had become sexual. I told myself he was the Messiah and everything he did was holy. One wrong thought could taint me, and to be saved I had to sleep less, pray more, eat little and exercise. Losing a dangerous amount of weight caused my organs to atrophy and, in January 2012, I ended up in hospital with an eating disorder. 'DEEPLY DECIEVED' Mum saved me by convincing the clinic to discharge me to her instead of the church, then by bringing me to a cult de-programmer. After two days of them talking to me about the tactics cults use, it hit me – Jung Myung-seok was in prison for raping and sexually assaulting three women, and I'd spent 18 months in his cult. Months of grief followed as I realised how deeply I'd been deceived. I began slowly rebuilding my life, meeting other cult survivors, making new friends and forging a career for myself. In 2023, Jung Myung-seok was convicted of further sexual assaults, including rape, and sentenced to an extra 23 years in prison. Leaving a cult isn't easy, but sharing my story helps. I want others to know there's a way out.' Cult Bride by Liz Cameron (Pantera Press) is out now.

Kneecap all smiles as they party with Jamie Dornan after Glastonbury set

After their Glastonbury set, Kneecap enjoyed post-performance celebrations with Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan - and they all smiled while posing for a photo together Kneecap were all smiles while partying with Jamie Dornan after their Glastonbury Festival set this afternoon. The hip hop trio, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, posed with the Fifty Shades of Grey actor after their performance. In a photo shared on the group's Instagram Stories, the band can be seen posing for a photo while sitting down with Jamie, who is also from Northern Ireland. The 43-year-old star, who was named one of Ireland's greatest film actors by The Irish Times in 2020, was pictured holding a can during the post-gig celebrations. Kneecap have been in the headlines after member Liam Og O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terror offence. In reference to his bandmate's upcoming court date, Naoise O Caireallain, who performs under the name Moglai Bap, said they would "start a riot outside the courts," before clarifying: "No riots - just love and support, and support for Palestine." In the run-up to the festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset, several politicians called for Kneecap to be removed from the line-up and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said their performance would not be "appropriate". During the performance Caireallain said: "The Prime Minister of your country, not mine, said he didn't want us to play, so f*** Keir Starmer." He also said a "big thank you to the Eavis family" and said "they stood strong" amid calls for the organisers to drop them from the line-up. O hAnnaidh, 27, wore a keffiyeh during the set, while member JJ O Dochartaigh, who performs under the name DJ Provai, wore his signature tri-coloured balaclava as well as a T-shirt that said "We are all Palestine Action", in reference to the soon-to-be banned campaign group. News broadcasts criticising the hip hop trio played from the sound system before they walked onto the stage were booed by the Glastonbury Festival audience. The trio opened with the song Better Way To Live from their 2024 album Fine Art and also performed tracks including Get Your Brits Out and Hood. Access to the area around the West Holts Stage was closed around 45 minutes before their performance after groups of fans arrived to form a sea of Irish and Palestinian flags. Earlier on Saturday, the BBC confirmed they would not be live-streaming the set but said the performance is likely to be made available on-demand later. O hAnnaidh was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying "up Hamas, up Hezbollah" at a gig in November last year. On June 18, the rapper was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates O Caireallain and O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20. Elsewhere at the festival, Haim were revealed as the surprise act on the Park Stage at 7.30pm on Saturday. The band bounced on to the stage in black and silver outfits and tore into a raucous version of hit single The Wire. After the song, singer Danielle Haim said: "On our first album, we came to Glastonbury and we played the Park Stage, I love you, and it was the best show I had ever played, until now, this tops everything." The band was revealed as the surprise act with a red LED sign, similar to the one on their new LP I Quit, which was released earlier this year. The sign read "the Haim show is about to begin". Haim also dipped into some of their best-known songs, such as Summer Girl, Want You Back and one of their latest singles, Relationships. On the Pyramid Stage, Pulp were revealed to be Patchwork with the Sheffield-formed Britpop band paying homage to their breakthrough 1995 stand-in headline set during the performance.

John Travolta reprises iconic Grease role 46 years after the original

A Grease comeback in 2025 was not on our bingo cards, but we are hopelessly devoted to his new look. John Travolta left fans speechless at the Hollywood Bowl last night by bringing back his classic Danny Zuko get-up. The signature slicked-back quiff and leather jacket were back on the stage for a surprise Grease sing-along gig. Travolta, now 71, appeared spontaneously on stage to roaring applause at the La La Land outdoor event celebrating the 1978 musical comedy. Surprising not only fans but also his former Grease co‑stars who were in attendance – the audience went wild when Travolta emerged as Danny. The audience wasn't the only ones in complete shock, Travolta kept his surprise show a secret from the Grease cast: Barry Pearl, Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, Didi Conn and even director Randal Kleiser were not in the know. Travolta himself later confirmed on Instagram that 'no one knew' about the surprise appearance, not even his on‑screen pals. Once on stage, Travolta dropped into character, joking in true Zuko style: 'L.A., I thought you were going back to Australia? That's cool, that's cool, baby…' He went on to lead the cast into a heartwarming chorus of We Go Together before closing the unforgettable show with the line, 'Enjoy the show, we love you!' Travolta's return to the role echoes a similar reunion from 2019, when he and the late Olivia Newton‑John, who died in 2022, surprised fans at a Florida sing‑along, both clad in full Danny and Sandy gear. Fans adored the moment when Travolta picked up his high-quality Zuko wig. Travolta said at the time he found the 50s-style hairdo suited him better than his own bald look, and this year's Hollywood Bowl appearance gave the fans the nostalgia they were craving. The 2019 event also marked a reunion with Newton‑John, who cherished the time spent reliving their iconic Grease roles on stage together. Newton‑John later reflected that the energy was incredible, saying: 'That movie is still loved … the excitement from the people, it was amazing'. More Trending Her infamous leather jacket from the final scene of the 1970s classic was auctioned off, with all proceeds going to her cancer wellness foundation. As for Travolta, he proved last night that Zuko can still light up a summer night, just like he did in 1978. Whether the wig is rollers for Edna Turnblad or covered in gel for Zuko, the actor remains one of the best showmen of all time. And as the Hollywood Bowl event showed, with a quiff, a leather jacket and a wink, Travolta has very much still got it. Got a story?
