Services of Roots Health Foundation lauded
Speaking at the 'Roots Health Service Awards – 2025' event, organised by the Foundation to commemorate Doctor's Day on Sunday at the PB Siddhartha College Auditorium in Moghalrajapuram, the Minister highlighted the extensive medical services provided by the Roots Health Foundation.
She commended the Foundation for honoring 82 doctors who have rendered outstanding services in the medical profession over the last 12 years, calling it a positive development that would inspire them to participate more actively in social initiatives. 'I personally witnessed their invaluable services during the Vijayawada floods,' she stated.
She noted that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has allocated Rs 20,000 crore in the budget, recognising the paramount importance of the healthcare sector. She reiterated the Chief Minister's resolve to transform the state into 'Arogya Andhra' (Healthy Andhra). Additionally, she mentioned the successful completion of the 'Koti Mokkalu Nate Karyakramam' aimed at making the state Haritha Andhra.
She highlighted the 'Yoga Andhra-2025' initiative, which secured a Guinness World Record, as a testament to the government's commitment to public health. She called for similar medical service programs to be undertaken in the Rayalaseema region as well.
Vijayawada East Constituency MLA Gadde Rammohan Rao also praised the Roots Health Foundation's unparalleled services in the medical field. He acknowledged the significance of recognising prominent medical professionals with health awards for their contributions to society.
During the event, the Roots Health Foundation provided financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to Bhakta Singh, a 12-year-old boy suffering from cancer. The 'Roots Health Service Award-2025' was presented to distinguished doctors for their excellence in the medical profession.

Girl students irked over frequent drain blocks inside MMC hostel
MADURAI: Medical students residing at the UG Girls' hostel inside Madurai Medical College (MMC) are frustrated over the frequent clogging of drains. They also claimed that despite the removal of blocks, the drains overflowing inside the restrooms are persistent. A student told the TNIE, "Around 450 MBBS and pharmacology students are residing inside the hostel, and though the entire premises is safe, the blocked drainage system is a recurring problem. As these channels spread through the hostel, two months ago clogged drains overflowed into the hostel rooms. Many students are upset about it. Despite complaints, college authorities have not taken action against it." Another student said, "There are four blocks and few of them are more than 20 years old and these are used as residential settlements for the girl students pursuing MBBS and pharmacology. Though renovations are carried out in these buildings, nothing has been done to fix the drainage channels for the past several decades. Rain or blockage in the channel leads to water overflowing inside the premises, creating a nuisance or leaving a foul smell. Though the water flow is contained when the blocks are removed, it gets back to its old condition after a week." When the TNIE contacted Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar, GRH dean, he said, "We are aware of the issue faced by the students residing in the girls' hostel. When it was reported, we immediately removed the silt and blocks from the channels. However, this is temporary, and we have decided to renovate all the drainage and sewage channels as they are old and require extensive work. So, we have sent a proposal to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME) in Chennai and the renovation cost is estimated to be Rs 2 crore. However, after acceptance, the work will be carried out."

CS orders swift admissions, better standards in welfare hostels
Vijayawada: Chief secretary K Vijayanand on Tuesday directed officials of various welfare departments to expedite the admission process in all welfare hostels and residential schools across Andhra Pradesh. During a review at the Secretariat, Vijayanand scrutinised the operations of hostels and residential schools under the SC, ST, BC, and minority welfare departments, focusing on admissions, food quality, and overall management. Addressing the officials, the chief secretary emphasised the mandatory integration of the Facial Recognition Attendance System (FRAS) with the Real-Time Governance Society (RTGS) for continuous monitoring in all welfare hostels and residential schools. He strictly warned against any compromise on the quality of food provided to students, stressing the importance of adhering to the existing diet menu and ensuring better meals. Vijayanand laid particular emphasis on hygiene, instructing department officials to undertake special measures for the cleanliness of kitchen areas and the overall surroundings of hostels, in addition to daily cleaning routines. He also mandated frequent pest control measures in all hostels and residential schools to combat insects like cockroaches. To further improve the functioning of these institutions, the Chief Secretary urged district collectors and state-level officials from the respective welfare departments to conduct frequent surprise inspections. He highlighted the need to ensure adequate provision of safe drinking water and well-maintained toilets. Vijayanand expressed concern over recent incidents of students falling ill due to food quality and other reasons, directing strict measures to prevent any recurrence of such situations. He further instructed that quality bed sheets and carpets be distributed to all students in welfare hostels through APCO by the end of this month. Earlier in the meeting, SC and ST welfare secretary Y Nayak and BC welfare secretary S Satyanarayana briefed the chief secretary on the admission status, facilities and performance of their respective departments' hostels and residential schools. Minority welfare commissioner Ch Sridhar, BC welfare director Dr Mallikarjuna, AP social welfare residential educational Institutions secretary V Prasanna Venkatesh and others took part in the meeting.

1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced the extension of health insurance cover to each family in the state, offering Rs 10 lakh per annum under 'Mukh Mantri Sehat Beema Yojana'. An official said each beneficiary will be issued a health card, and the registration for "free and cashless" treatment will be rolled out from Oct 2. The scheme will cover all 65 lakh families in the state, said Mann. Mann added that under this scheme, all residents of Punjab will be entitled to cashless treatment worth Rs 10 lakh. He said this free treatment will be available across all govt and empanelled private hospitals. Mann criticised previous administrations, lamenting their "lacklustre performance" and failure to address healthcare issues. The govt will now universalise this scheme, covering all 65 lakh families in the state with a Rs 10-lakh annual limit, he said. Mann also criticised previous govts for "patronising" smugglers, gangsters, and other criminals who made Punjab their stronghold.
