HOOKER MAXIME LAMOTHE scored a historic hat-trick as Bordeaux-Begles beat Toulon 39-24 on Saturday to set-up a repeat of last season's French Top 14 final.
Lamothe became the first player to score three tries in a Top 14 knock-out game which helped clinch a place in next Saturday's decider in Paris against holders and record 23-time champions Toulouse.
Bordeaux-Begles will now eye a double after winning the Champions Cup a month ago and seek revenge for being hammered 59-3 in last year's domestic final.
New Zealand centre Leicester Fainga'anuku, Fiji winger Setariki Tuicuvu and Georgia prop Beka Gigashvili were Toulon's try-scorers in their first French semi-final since 2017.

Toulouse edge out Bordeaux to secure third straight Top 14 crown

Top 14 final: Toulouse 38 Bordeaux Begles 33 Toulouse claimed their third consecutive Top 14 title and a record-extending 24th French championship by beating Bordeaux Begles 39-33 after extra-time in a dramatic final on Saturday. Thomas Ramos kicked two penalties in the last five minutes for Toulouse after Bordeaux's Maxime Lucu had converted a penalty on the hooter to take the game into extra time at 33-33. A try from Anthony Jelonch and a brace from Jack Willis put champions Toulouse in control of the match but Damian Penaud, Matthieu Jalibert and Guido Petti also crossed the tryline to keep Bordeaux in touch. Petti and Pierre Bochaton were shown yellow cards and Toulouse, missing talisman Antoine Dupont, won their 11th consecutive final, a year after routing Bordeaux Begles 59-3 in the title match. "Emotions are unbelievable. The scenario is crazy", Jelonch said on France TV. "We were exhausted after 80 minutes, we played 100. When you see all the players' emotions, this one is the most beautiful of all." Bordeaux's Jalibert said he was proud of his side. "We were strong but the coin didn't fall on our side", the fly-half said on France TV. "I think we can keep our heads up. I'm proud of the team because after last year's disappointment, we wanted to come back here." After Toulouse and Bordeaux traded penalties, the holders capitalised on Petti's yellow card to score the opening try when Jelonch found a gap in the defence. Bordeaux responded quickly, however, when Penaud latched on to Maxime Lucu's kick to touch down. Willis restored Toulouse's lead with a powerful finish from a driving maul just before half-time and the English flanker crossed for a second try after Jalibert had dotted down under the posts for Bordeaux. Lock Petti kept the game alive when he went over from a wide position for Bordeaux before Lucu sent the game into extra time. France internationals Romain Ntamack and Louis Bielle-Biarrey did not reappear after half-time, the former due to a shoulder injury while the latter was playing his first match after suffering a concussion. Paul Pogba to return to football with Monaco in bid to revive career

PAUL POGBA HAS signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side Monaco to return to football after a near two-year absence, the club announced on Saturday. The 2018 World Cup winner has made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, an 18-month doping ban and an extortion case in which he was the victim. Pogba failed a drugs test in August 2023 after a match for Juventus and has been free to return to football since March, although his contract at the Italian giants was terminated last year. The midfielder will now play club football in Ligue 1 for the first time in his professional career. 'I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time,' the 32-year-old told French television last weekend. Pogba played in the Le Havre youth team before signing for Manchester United in 2009. Advertisement He made only a handful of first-team appearances for the three-time European champions before signing for Juventus in 2012. Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before rejoining United for a then-world record €105 million. He moved back to Juventus three years ago but struggled with a series of injuries. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in a plot to extort 13 million euros from Pogba in 2022. Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the France national team, playing a starring role and scoring in their World Cup final victory over Croatia seven years ago. His new club Monaco will play in the Champions League next season after finishing third in Ligue 1 last term. – © AFP 2025

Roy Keane meets football legends as he visits Inter Miami training camp

Roy Keane met a trio of Barcelona greats as he visited Inter Miami's training camp ahead of the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup. The Corkman has travelled to the United States to take in the later stages of the inaugural edition of the club competition. And the former Manchester United captain visited the Inter Miami squad ahead of their clash with PSG on Sunday. Keane was pictured alongside a trio of former Barcelona stars in Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. But fans were disappointed that Keane never got to meet Inter Miami's talisman Lionel Messi. It was Messi's free-kick against Porto that propelled his MLS side into the knockout stages of the Club World Cup. But they now have their work cut out against the reigning Champions League winners in PSG. Messi, of course, had a two-year spell at PSG after leaving Barcelona, scoring 32 goals in 75 games for the French side.
