Authorities regained control with military support after 12 hoursSeven people were killed and 11 others were injured in a Mexican prison riot on Sunday where inmates were protesting treatment inside the prison due to the activities of a criminal group, authorities said.
The violence broke out Saturday afternoon and stretched into the night at a prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz, according to a statement from the state security ministry. Inmates maintained control of the facility for 12 hours.
Authorities in Veracruz were able to carry out a 'coordinated operation' with support from the military to regain control of the prison. 'As a result of the riot, we report the tragic deaths of seven inmates and 11 injured people,' the statement said.
Those who survived the prison riot are being treated in various hospitals for their injuries, authorities said. Three inmates were also relocated to a different facility as a result of the riot, the state security ministry said.
The inmates fought and set fire to the facility after demanding that authorities allow human rights activists and the press inside the prison, alleging the criminal group "Grupo Sombra" was abusing and extorting inmates, El País and the Associated Press reported. The prison was holding 778 inmates in June — more than the 735 inmates it was designed to hold, according to the AP.
Veracruz is one of the most violent states in Mexico, El País reported. Days before the riot, a taxi driver was shot and hospitalized. But later, the alleged hitman pretended to be the victim's relative and killed him at the hospital where he was recovering, authorities alleged, El País reported.

FBI report: Violent crime fell in 2024, but assaults on officers reaches 10-year high

Federal agencies CrimeFacebookTweetLink Follow Violent crime decreased in the US in 2024, along with property crime, murder and robbery, while the number of reported assaults on officers reached a 10-year high, according to FBI data released Tuesday. According to the FBI's Reported Crimes in the Nation, a report that relies on local law enforcement submitting data to the FBI's federal system, violent crime decreased an estimated 4.5% compared to the previous year and property damage went down just over 8%. Murders, too, decreased by an estimated 14.9%, along with robbery, which went down nearly 9%. The statistics are at odds with comments President Donald Trump made throughout his campaign last year, arguing that crime was 'way up' and claiming that 'we've never seen crime like this before.' Reported assaults on officers, however, increased from over 83,000 in 2023 to 85,730 in 2024, marking a 10-year high of assaults on law enforcement officers. In 2015, that number was significantly lower, with 52,448 reported assaults. 'Between 2021 and 2024, we had 258 law enforcement officers feloniously killed in the line of duty,' a law enforcement official told reporters on a briefing call announcing the report, including 64 last year. The FBI is working on an in-depth behavioral analysis study to figure out why assaults on officers is increasing. 'It's going to be a longer study, because we are doing a real, in-depth behavioral analysis study of why these are occurring,' the official said. The FBI's crime report includes reporting from law enforcement agencies covering over 90% of the population in the US and will soon be available on a monthly basis, the official said during Tuesday's call. Hate crimes decreased slightly by 1.5%, according to the FBI's estimate for 2024 and motor vehicle theft dropped by a significant 19.5% when compared to 2023, though the rate remains higher than it was in the previous decade, from 2010 to 2021. Robbery, the report for 2024 says, was near its lowest rate in the last 20 years.

Michigan's OK2SAY school safety hotline reports record number of tips in 2024

A State of Michigan school safety hotline reports it received a record number of messages and calls during 2024. The OK2SAY project is now in its 10th year, having launched in 2014. This is a confidential tip line that anyone can use, 24/7, to report potential harmful or criminal activities involving students. Information then goes the appropriate school officials, school resource officers, law enforcement, crisis lines or other agencies. Every public and private school in Michigan is required to have at least one emergency contact person registered with the program. OK2SAY is overseen by Michigan State Police and was called for in the Michigan Student Safety Act of 2013. The program's 2024 report was presented Monday, citing 11,671 tips received. Because some tips from multiple people are related to the same circumstances, there were 8,952 total incidents tracked. This is a 20% increase in calls from the year before. Of those contacts, 25 tips resulted in the confiscation of weapons and 228 tips resulted in the seizure of drugs or alcohol. In addition, 343 schools conducted a behavior or suicide threat assessment as a result of an OK2SAY tip. The cost to run the program during 2024 was $1.64 million. Promotion for the OK2SAY program includes public service announcements that students are invited to produce, marketing at education conferences and information booths at Michigan High School Athletic Association events. "This isn't just about reporting concerns; it's about fostering a culture of courage," MSP director, Col. James F. Grady II said in his statement. "Every tip, every act of speaking up, is a testament to a student's commitment to their community. It's a student saying, 'I care, and I want to make a difference.' This courage is the very foundation of safer schools and stronger communities." The top five topics among the 25 categories tracked by Michigan State Police, and the numbers recorded, are: OK2SAY can receive tips through its mobile app, its website, email, text messaging and phone calls. The above video first aired on Sept. 16, 2024.

House Committee Subpoenas Jeffrey Epstein Records from Justice Department

WASHINGTON—The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department for records related to its Jeffrey Epstein investigation and is seeking to question Bill and Hillary Clinton along with a host of former officials over the disgraced financier's crimes. The subpoenas sent Tuesday by the Republican-controlled committee intensify pressure on the Trump administration after weeks of criticism over its initial refusal to release documents from the investigation, which some believed would show links between Epstein and other powerful individuals.
