SA Vs NZ: Henry And Duffy Help New Zealand Edge South Africa In T20I Tri Series
Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy took six wickets, leading New Zealand to a 21-run win over South Africa in the T20I Tri-Series.
Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy claimed six wickets between them, guiding New Zealand to a 21-run victory over South Africa in their opening match of the T20I Tri-Series at Harare Sports Club, defending a total of 173.
Henry's early breakthroughs (3/34) and Duffy's crucial strikes in the final overs (3/20) overwhelmed the Proteas, despite a spirited fightback led by George Linde.
This win marked a successful start to Rob Walter's coaching tenure with New Zealand, facing the team he previously coached.
Chasing 174, South Africa struggled at 111 for 7 in the 14th over. Linde (30 off 20) and Gerald Coetzee (17) then formed a 37-run partnership, keeping their hopes alive. With 31 needed from the last three overs, Linde mistimed a pull shot and was caught at deep mid-wicket off Duffy. Duffy then dismissed Coetzee on the next ball, sealing the victory and earning a well-deserved three-wicket haul.
Henry's new-ball spell set the tone earlier, including the key wicket of Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who had made a quick 27 but edged behind in the fourth over. Henry's bounce and movement troubled the South African top order, reducing them to 62 for 5 inside nine overs.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand posted 173 for 5, thanks to a remarkable fightback from Tim Robinson (75 not out) and debutant Bevon Jacobs (44), who added an unbroken 103-run stand for the sixth wicket. Their partnership rescued the BlackCaps from a precarious 70 for 5 in the 10th over, making it New Zealand's second-highest stand for the sixth wicket in T20Is.
Robinson showed composure and flair, hitting Coetzee for three sixes, including an impressive uppercut over backward point. Jacobs, playing his first game for New Zealand, rotated the strike effectively and punished loose deliveries, complementing Robinson perfectly.
Earlier, South Africa's bowlers struck regularly, with Kwena Maphaka, Gerald Coetzee, and Corbin Bosch chipping away. However, they couldn't contain the late surge, which proved decisive.
Pretorius, after a golden duck in the series opener, came out aggressively. He hit five boundaries in his 17-ball 27, giving the chase early momentum. But once Henry dismissed him, wickets fell quickly.
Rassie van der Dussen's run-out, a sharp piece of fielding involving Tom Seifert and Mitchell Santner, added to South Africa's troubles. The middle order failed to fire, and even Brevis and Linde's counter-attacks weren't enough.
With Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra unavailable due to MLC duties, New Zealand will be encouraged by the performance of their bench strength. Walter's new era has started with grit, control, and a win.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 173/5 (Tim Robinson 75 not out, Bevon Jacobs 44, Kwena Maphaka 2/38) beat South Africa 152 all out in 18.2 overs (Dewald Brevis 35, George Linde 30; Jacob Duffy 3/20, Matt Henry 3/34) by 21 runs.

Brevis, Ngidi Help South Africa Beat Zimbabwe By 5 Wickets in T20 Tri-Series Opener
Last Updated: South Africa beat Zimbabwe by five wickets in the T20 tri-series opener in Harare. Hermann and Brevis led the chase after Zimbabwe scored 141/6. South Africa continued their dominance over Zimbabwe by defeating their neighbours by five wickets in the opening match of a Twenty20 international tri-series at Harare Sports Club on Monday. New Zealand will play their first match of the tournament against South Africa at the same venue on Wednesday. Zimbabwe were limited to 141 for six after being sent in to bat, with captain Sikandar Raza top-scoring with 54 not out. Both teams made several changes following a two-match Test series in Bulawayo, which South Africa won comfortably. Opening bowler Lungi Ngidi took a wicket and conceded only seven runs in his three-over opening spell. Left-arm spinner George Linde took three for 10, including two wickets for four runs in the last over. South Africa lost three wickets in the six-over power play against aggressive left-arm fast bowler Richard Ngarava and seamer Trevor Gwandu. However, new cap Rubin Hermann (45) and hard-hitting player of the match Dewald Brevis, who smashed 41 off 17 balls, put on 72 for the fourth wicket to ensure a comfortable win. South African captain Rassie van der Dussen praised the two young batters. 'There was a little bit of pressure up front," he said. 'Losing three wickets in the power play was not ideal but their partnership was brilliant." Brevis hit five sixes and a four in his innings, including three successive sixes off leg-spinner Ryan Burl. Raza said Ngarava, who took three for 35, and Gwandu (two for 15) were outstanding. 'It was the first game of the winter (in Harare) and we weren't sure of the wicket," said Raza of his team's batting performance. 'At least we know these are going to be high-scoring games." South African Star Batter Named ICC Men's Player Of The Month For June 2025
Last Updated: Aiden Markram was named ICC Player of the Month for June 2025 after leading South Africa to a WTC win. Hayley Matthews won the women's award for her performance. South Africa's World Test Championship (WTC)-winning star batter Aiden Markram has been named as the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s Player of the Month for June 2025. Markram made 136 runs and picked up two wickets to help the Proteas beat Australia at Lord's and end a 27-year wait for a senior ICC trophy. He was awarded the Player of the Match in the final, too. 'It is a privilege to receive this award. To contribute to an ICC World Test Championship win for our team and South Africa is something that means a lot to me," Markram said, as quoted by the ICC. 'Winning the final at Lord's is a historic moment for South African cricket, and it is something we will all remember forever. This victory was only possible due to the combined efforts of the entire team, with crucial contributions from KG (Kagiso Rabada) and Tembs (Proteas captain Temba Bavuma)," he added. Markram overcame he disappointment of a duck in the first innings to anchor South Africa in the big chase of 282 runs. He put up a 147-run stand alongside Bavuma for the third wicket, which helped them recover from 70/2. He got out after a 207-ball marathon but had done enough to escort the Proteas to the brink of victory. Meanwhile, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews took home the award in the women's category. It is her fourth such accolade. Her best performance came in the three-T20I series against South Africa, where here twin 60s helped the Windies overturn a 1-0 deficit. She also won the Player of the Series trophy for it. 'It's an honour to receive the Player of the Month award again. I've been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it's been great to contribute to the team's success — especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa," Matthews said about the ICC award in a statement. 'Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what's ahead. There's a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team. We're heading in the right direction, and I'm excited about where we can go from here." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
