IMF Predicts Egypt to Generate $3 Billion from Asset Sales in 2024/25

Taarek Refaat
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecasted that Egypt will generate approximately $3 billion in revenue from asset sales during the fiscal year 2024-25.
This comes as part of the country's ongoing economic reform program, which is being carried out in collaboration with the IMF.
The Egyptian government has been implementing measures aimed at reducing the state's role in the economy and fostering greater participation from the private sector. These steps have included a series of state-owned asset sales, designed to unlock value, attract both local and foreign investment, and reduce public debt.
According to the IMF's projections, Egypt is expected to generate $3.6 billion from asset sales in the 2024-25 fiscal year. However, this figure is anticipated to decline in subsequent years, with $3 billion expected for 2025-26, and further down to $2.1 billion in 2026-27.
This steady decline reflects the limited pool of state-owned assets left for sale, as the government has already offloaded a significant portion of its holdings in recent years. It also signals that Egypt's reliance on asset sales to meet its fiscal targets may become less viable as time progresses.
The IMF has been a key partner in Egypt's efforts to stabilize and grow its economy, particularly since the country entered a $12 billion loan agreement with the Fund in 2016. As part of the economic reform program, which aims to boost private sector investment and reduce public sector dominance, the government has been tasked with privatizing a number of state-owned companies.
Over the past few years, Egypt has taken steps to privatize major assets, including the sale of stakes in state-owned banks, energy companies, and infrastructure firms. One of the most significant assets still under negotiation is the potential sale of Bank Cairo, which has faced delays primarily due to pricing disputes.
While asset sales can provide immediate fiscal relief, the strategy has its critics. Some argue that selling state-owned assets may not be a sustainable long-term solution for Egypt's economic challenges. Concerns also persist about the social impact of such privatization efforts, particularly regarding jobs and service provision.
On the other hand, proponents of the strategy argue that moving assets into private hands will help modernize Egypt's economy, create jobs, and promote growth by boosting foreign investment and improving efficiency.
Egypt's drive to divest from state-owned assets is seen as a key component of its broader goal to attract foreign direct investment (FDI). The government has actively sought to engage international investors, positioning the country as a regional hub for business and trade.

Egypt FM in Nigeria for talks on bilateral cooperation, counterterrorism - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama in Abuja on Monday to discuss regional developments, deepen bilateral relations, and enhance cooperation—particularly in the economic and counterterrorism spheres. The visit marks the first stop in Abdelatty's tour of five West African countries. According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, Abdelatty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Nigerian relations and highlighted the third round of political consultations held in Cairo in January 2025—the first at the ministerial level—as a reflection of both countries' desire to elevate ties into a comprehensive partnership. Abdelatty also reviewed the current cooperation, emphasizing the need to build on the outcomes of the Egyptian-Nigerian Business Forum in Abuja to boost trade and investment across key sectors, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, construction, and information technology. The Egyptian delegation included representatives from leading companies as well as from the Egyptian Exporters Association, the Federation of Egyptian Industries, the Egypt Future Agency, the Export Council for Medical Industries, and the Mineral Wealth Authority—signalling Cairo's commitment to expanding economic ties. Counterterrorism cooperation On the security front, Abdelatty underscored Egypt's readiness to share its counterterrorism expertise by providing advanced field training and support for combating extremist ideologies. He stressed the importance of rejecting violence, promoting tolerance, and disseminating moderate Islamic values, while noting the key role played by both the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, and Al-Azhar in supporting Nigeria's fight against radicalization. Support for UNESCO candidacy The talks were also attended by Khaled El-Anany, Egypt's candidate for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Abdelatty expressed appreciation for Nigeria's support of El-Anany's candidacy during the 47th session of the African Union Executive Council, calling it a vote of confidence in the Egyptian nominee's qualifications and capacity to represent Africa at the UN cultural agency. Development aid and regional issues Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's continued support for Nigerian institutions through the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), noting that over 570 Nigerians have participated in 260 training programmes offered in cooperation with Egyptian institutions. The two ministers also exchanged views on regional issues, particularly developments in the Sahel, Horn of Africa, Sudan, Libya, and Somalia. Discussions focused on efforts to stabilize West Africa and strengthen joint African action within the African Union framework, in light of growing security threats across the continent. For his part, Onyeama praised Egypt's regional leadership, particularly its efforts in reconstruction, development, and integration. He expressed Nigeria's interest in drawing on Egyptian expertise in infrastructure, technical education, healthcare, and modern agriculture. The ministers concluded by affirming their commitment to closer coordination within international and regional organizations and mutual support for international nominations. During his visit, Abdelatty is scheduled to meet senior Nigerian officials, regional bloc representatives, members of the business community, and Egyptian expatriates. His African tour will continue with visits to Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Senegal. It follows Egypt's active participation in the African Union Executive Council's 47th Ordinary Session, where President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Abdelatty held multiple meetings with African leaders and officials. Gold Benefits from Weak Dollar and Renewed Safe-Haven Demand Amid Tariff Fears and Monetary Easing Expectations

Waleed Farouk Gold prices recorded a significant increase in both local and global markets during Monday's trading session, supported by the weakening of the US dollar and renewed demand for safe-haven assets amid ongoing uncertainty over US trade and monetary policies. Domestically, gold prices rose by approximately EGP 5, with the 21-karat gram reaching EGP 4,655. Globally, the ounce climbed by $17 to settle around $3,567. The 24-karat gram recorded EGP 5,320, the 18-karat stood at EGP 3,990, and the 14-karat at EGP 3,104. Meanwhile, the gold pound was priced at EGP 37,240. Gold had ended last week's trading with a slight decline of EGP 10, with the 21-karat gram opening at EGP 4,660 and closing at EGP 4,650, while the global ounce dropped by 0.1%, from $3,355 to $3,350. Several factors boosted gold at the start of the week, most notably the US dollar index retreating from monthly highs following dovish comments by Federal Reserve Board member Christopher Waller last week, which strengthened expectations for a rate cut in September. Additional support came from renewed trade threats by former President Donald Trump, who proposed imposing tariffs of up to 20% on imports from the European Union starting August 1, prompting investors to seek refuge in gold as a safe haven amid fears of economic fallout. Despite these supportive conditions, investors remained cautious about making strong bullish bets, especially amid rising expectations that the Federal Reserve may delay any rate cut, given signals that tariffs could impact consumer prices. This would provide additional support for the dollar and limit gains in non-yielding assets like gold. Markets currently anticipate two rate cuts of 25 basis points each before the end of the year. However, comments by Fed Chair Jerome Powell regarding the potential inflationary impact of new tariffs have added more uncertainty to the monetary policy outlook, diminishing gold's appeal as an inflation hedge in a high-yield environment. The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 61.8 in July, reflecting growing optimism about current and future economic conditions, which in turn lent support to the dollar and limited gold's upside. Nevertheless, declining long-term inflation expectations—from 4% to 3.6%—and short-term forecasts—from 5% to 4.4%—grant the Fed more flexibility in managing policy without rushing to cut rates, providing a counterbalance in the broader outlook. Markets this week are closely watching several key economic indicators that may shape the direction of global markets. These include a speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell in Washington on Tuesday, existing home sales data on Wednesday, the European Central Bank's interest rate decision, weekly US jobless claims, PMI data, and new home sales on Thursday, as well as durable goods orders—a leading indicator of corporate investment—on Friday. Despite supportive monetary and geopolitical conditions, gold remains range-bound and lacks strong momentum to break through key resistance levels. The market's direction in the short to medium term remains contingent on developments in US monetary policy, global trade tensions, and economic growth data. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
