Stapleton Bridge to reopen later on Thursday
AFTER a delay, the Stapleton Bridge could be re-opened some time on Thursday, July 10, according to Ward councillor Melanie Brauteseth.
The bridge had been estimated to be re-opened by Wednesday but a delay, with re-tarring getting underway on Thursday, drove this back.

'The good news is that speaking with officials, the road will be open later today. Just waiting for road markings to be done. I will follow up with the contractor next week for outstanding scope of work,' said the councillor.
The bridge was closed earlier in June due to structural instability.
Meanwhile, the Stapleton Road project has suffered a delay to around the end of July.

Car crashes into Ferndale on Republic hole
A brand new Omoda car slipped into an unfilled open hole on Republic Road, outside the entrance to Ferndale on Republic on the afternoon of July 11. Driver and owner, Lesego Ledwaba at the time explained that she was turning into the shopping centre and saw a pedestrian on the road. 'When I tried to avoid the pedestrian crossing, I swerved into the open pit. I also lightly bumped the pedestrian.' She confirmed that everyone in the car was fine. The accident happened a few hours after she fetched the car from the garage. Also read: Rand Water maintenance: Recovery of southern Johannesburg and inner city The car went into the hole, leaving the front nose slightly tilted to the left, while the other dangled in the air. She explained that the car is fine, it is just the side that went into the pit that is damaged. 'I don't know what will happen next. I will wait for the repairs to occur, and we will see.' The hole was left by Johannesburg Water after fixing a water leak in July 2024, a full year ago. It still remains unclear when it will be backfilled, as it is 10 days away from its first anniversary. The lane that turns into the shopping centre is severely affected by the excavation, which also leads to traffic congestion and delays. Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman said that this is unbelievable in so many ways, and it's a miracle that it hasn't happened a lot sooner. 'In 10 days time, it's a year since that hole was opened. It is destroying businesses, residents' lives, and causing traffic jams. Shops have lost business for almost a year. All entities involved have failed dismally and should hang their heads in shame. To leave this mess, not fixing stormwater and backfill, is just unacceptable.' Also read: JRA finally repairs water channel in Bromhof She added that it was an accident waiting to happen, and it's never good if anyone gets hurt. 'This poor woman must be traumatised; it is a new car and that is terrible. If we lived in a place where the infrastructure was looked after, we wouldn't be sitting where we are right now but because there's such negligence in the city especially with such an appalling lack of work ethic, pride and people not doing their job, we end up in a situation like this.' Chatsworth couple offers free car chauffeur services for prom season
Natalie Anne Pillay and Kaylin Vadiveloo. Image: Supplied A CHATSWORTH couple, inspired by their own experiences, are offering free car chauffeur services to help less fortunate pupils attend their proms, aiming to make a difference in their community. Natalie Anne Pillay, 30, a service station manager, and her husband, Kaylin Vadiveloo, 26, a fleet controller, were both raised by single mothers, and many times did not have the opportunities to do what their friends could. 'We both did not have finances to be a part of our debs ball or prom. Our schools were also located in low income areas, so they didn't offer proms,' Pillay said. 'As the years went by, my husband and I built our lives. My husband purchased his car last year. We are building a future together. One night we watched a video on Facebook about a Chatsworth school prom and thought about helping the less fortunate kids. We didn't get this experience and wanted to help.' Video Player is loading. 'The post was made anonymously and drew a lot of negative attention. The reason why I posted anonymously is because we have our families on social media and we were not doing this to get famous or to show off. We wanted a child in our home town, Chatsworth, to benefit from the joy that they would have ordinarily missed. People said we were scammers who wanted to kidnap children. But that is far from true. We will engage with their parents and they will have to accompany their children on the day." Win big with the POST. Image: File Pillay said the offer was not limited to Chatsworth. 'We thought of Chatsworth because we were both born and brought up here. However, I can also help with the driving, if my husband is at work. We hope we can accommodate many children who need help.'
