The Toronto Blue Jays are on a heater at the right time. They not only swept the New York Yankees in four games to take the division lead, but they also beat the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, extending their AL East lead to two games over both the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.

Toronto won 4-3 in 10 innings, with the game ending on an Ernie Clement sacrifice bunt. Angels reliever Sam Bachman committed a throwing error to first, allowing Myles Straw to score the winning run from second base.
The Blue Jays are now on a six-game win streak, the highest in baseball. However, they announced an injury before Saturday's Angels rematch via their social media.

The team put right-handed pitcher Yimi García on the 15-day IL with a left ankle sprain and recalled fellow right-hander Robinson Piña from Triple-A. It also activated the latter hurler for Saturday's game.
Garcia is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA over 22 appearances this season. The 34-year-old also has three saves out of seven opportunities and six holds.

Meanwhile, Piña's only MLB outing thus far was for the Miami Marlins on June 20. The 26-year-old allowed one run in one inning against the Atlanta Braves.
Right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.85 ERA) will start for Toronto on Saturday against Los Angeles right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.44 ERA). The game will start at 3:07 p.m. EST at the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays will play the Angels again on Sunday before traveling to face the Chicago White Sox and Athletics.

Cubs reach multi-year extension with president Jed Hoyer

Jed Hoyer is sticking around in Chicago. The Cubs reached a multi-year extension with their president of baseball operations on Monday afternoon, the team announced. Specifics of his new deal are not yet known, though his current contract with the Cubs was set to expire after this season. "Jed and his baseball operations staff have built a healthy player development organization and put an exciting, playoff contending team on the field," chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. "We are looking forward to the rest of hte season and to working with Jed for years to come." Hoyer has been with the Cubs since 2011, which makes him one of the longest-tenured front office executives anywhere in the league. He joined the franchise alongside then-president Theo Epstein as their general manager, and helped orchestrate the team's World Series win in 2016. That snapped a championship drought that went on for well over a century. Hoyer then took over as the team's president after the 2020 campaign when Epstein stepped down, and he signed a new five-year deal at the time. Hoyer largely broke up the Cubs' World Series group during his first season at the helm, too, sending away Anthony Rizzo, Javier Báez and Kris Bryant in quick succession ahead of the 2021 trade deadline. But now several years later, the Cubs are back in the mix with several new young starts — including NL MVP candidate Pete Crow-Armstrong, who was part of those trades four years ago. Hoyer also hired manager Craig Counsell to take over in 2024. Though the Cubs haven't made the playoffs under Hoyer's leadership in the role yet, the team holds a 62-43 record entering Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. They are tied for first in the NL Central race with the Brewers, too, which is something they haven't won since 2020. While they aren't quite back to where they were a decade ago, the Cubs clearly believe that Hoyer is the man to get them there once again.

Jets UDFA DL Payton Page projected to make roster

The New York Jets are a handful of completed practices in the books at training camp. A slew of undrafted free agents are attempting to make the 53-man roster. One of the early standouts has been former Clemson defensive lineman Payton Page. The ex Tigers standout was named Third-team All-ACC in 2024. Page started all 14 games, recording 32 tackles and was named a team captain. Page participated in the Shrine Bowl, and also leaped a 33-inch vertical at the NFL scouting combine. The Bleacher Report recently named one undrafted free agent capable of making the roster for all 32 teams. They chose Page for the Jets. "The New York Jets should be looking to add quality depth along their defensive interior," Brent Sobleski wrote. "The group is shaky beyond the combination of Quinnen Williams and Derrick Nnadi. Leonard Taylor III provides some upside after making the roster as an undrafted free agent last year. Otherwise, the options consist of journeymen who can be upgraded." "Payton Page didn't become a full-time starter along the Clemson defense until his final year on campus," Sobleski continued. "The Tigers are always loaded up front and even a highly regarded recruit of his caliber has to wait his turn. If New York's coaching staff uses him in the right way, he can plug a gap effectively and allow others to make plays." It's accurate the Jets are searching for an effective interior defensive lineman to play next to Quinnen Williams. Derrick Nnadi was signed to a team-friendly deal, and Leonard Taylor III is expected to take a developmental step forward. Nothing is guaranteed to those players, and there should be lots of competition for playing time at camp. Page is a player capable of taking advantage. Guards' All-Star Emmanuel Clase placed on paid leave as part of MLB sports betting investigation

Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting. Clase, a three-time All-Star, becomes the second Guardians pitcher to be placed on leave in connection with a sports gambling probe. Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31. It was unclear if the cases were related in any way. The Guardians said in a statement that they 'have been informed that no additional players or club personnel are expected to be impacted.' The 27-year-old Clase is 5-3 with 24 saves in 48 games this year, but he also has a career-high 3.23 ERA. The right-hander led the AL in saves in each of the previous three years and was speculated to be sought after in trades ahead of this week's MLB trade deadline. MLB said in a statement that Clase had been placed on leave per an agreement with the players' association while the league 'continues its sports betting investigation.' It declined further comment. Cleveland was slated to begin a three-game series against Colorado on Monday night. The Guardians are second in the AL Central with a 52-53 record. The Ortiz investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by the right-hander that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. The situation with Clase and Ortiz comes after MLB suspended five players for gambling in June 2024, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers — San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions. Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball in February for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games, and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the league's investigation. ___ AP MLB: Jay Cohen, The Associated Press
