CM's oppn to rise of Almatti dam height sparks row

Time of India06-06-2025
Vijayapura: CM Devendra Fadnavis' opposition to the proposed increase in height of Almatti dam has reignited tensions between Maharashtra and Karnataka over the Krishna river water.

It comes even as Karnataka struggles to complete the long-pending Upper Krishna Project Phase-2.
In a letter to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Fadnavis objected to raising the dam's height from 519 m to 524 m, claiming it would flood upstream areas of Sangli and Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
However, his objections have been contested after revelations that a high-level expert committee appointed by Maharashtra govt in 2020 had found no basis for such apprehensions.
The seven-member panel, led by irrigation expert and ex-Maharashtra principal secretary Nandakumar Vadnere, had studied flood patterns and the river basin across both states before submitting its findings. The committee's report, submitted to then CM Uddhav Thackeray, concluded the recurring floods in Sangli and Kolhapur were not linked to water storage in Almatti and Hipparagi reservoirs.
Instead, the report blamed "encroachment in the river basin and illegal, unscientific construction of buildings in Sangli and Kolhapur" as primary causes.
Other members of the committee included Sanjay Ghanekar, R R Pawar, Pradeep Purandare, Atul Kapole, N S Khare and Dhairyasheel Pawar.
During their study, the committee members visited locations including Almatti dam and Hipparagi reservoir, where Karnataka officials briefed them on water storage and flood-prevention measures.
Maharashtra's stand marks the first formal objection since the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal delivered its final verdict in 2013, allocating 173 tmcft of Krishna water to Karnataka.

BJP demands CBI probe in stampede case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the June 4 stampede tragedy that claimed 11 lives during the celebrations following the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL championship victory. Karnataka Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka wrote a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday, urging that the case be handed over to the CBI. Ashoka stated, 'Our fight will not stop until justice is delivered to the families of the 11 innocent youths who lost their lives in the tragedy caused by the negligence of the Congress government during the IPL victory celebrations. By projecting the police department as solely responsible for the tragedy, the government is attempting to evade its own accountability. I have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI to ensure justice for the victims' families.' In his letter, Ashoka noted, 'Eleven people were killed and more than 56 injured during the RCB victory celebrations on June 4. The incident sparked nationwide discussion and has become a black mark in the sporting history of the state. There have been allegations and counter-allegations between the police and the state government regarding the incident.' 'The media has reported that the stampede occurred due to the failure of the police department. However, the government has simply suspended a few police officers and remained silent. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), while reviewing a petition by one of the suspended officers, opined that it was not appropriate to hold only the police responsible,' he stated. 'It still remains unclear who is truly responsible for the tragedy, and the public also has the same question. Therefore, I urge you not to politicise this matter and to hand over the case to the CBI to ensure justice for the innocent lives lost,' Ashoka demanded.

CM, Dy CM offer ‘bagina' at Kabini reservoir

Mysuru: ChiefMinister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday performed the traditional bagina ritual at the Kabini reservoir in Beechanahalli, to mark the filling of the state's first major dam this monsoon. The Kabini reservoir, known for reaching capacity early during monsoon, had already touched near-full level by the first week of June. On Sunday, the water level stood at 2,283.33 feet, just short of its maximum capacity of 2,284 feet, with an inflow of 15,000 cusecs. After offering bagina at the dam's tower premises around 11:15 am, CM Siddaramaiah laid the foundation stone for rejuvenation works worth Rs32.25 crore. Speaking to the gathering, Siddaramaiah highlighted the importance of the Kapila river — a major tributary of the Cauvery — which irrigates over 1.13 lakh hectares. 'Like every year, bagina has been offered praying for prosperity to our farmers. A Brindavan-like landscape will also be developed near the dam for tourists,' he added. Reiterating the government's commitment to the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, the CM urged the Centre to grant clearances. 'Both the Goa and Union governments are under BJP's control — they should ensure permission for Mahadayi and Mekedatu,' he said. Deputy CM Shivakumar said the Cabinet, which met at Mahadeshwara Hills recently, had approved Rs88 crore for rejuvenating the dam and was committed to the reservoir's holistic development. District in-charge minister Dr HC Mahadevappa, MLAs Anil Chikkamadu, K. Harish Gowda, Darshan Dhruvanarayana, AR Krishnamurthy, and MLC Dr D Timmaiah were present.

BJP spreads lies, will never come for an open debate: CM

Mysuru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has accused the BJP of deliberately spreading lies about the state government's achievements and challenged the party to engage in an open public debate—a challenge he claims the BJP continues to avoid. Speaking to the media after offering bagina at the Kabini reservoir, Siddaramaiah dismissed BJP's recent criticism regarding his alleged snub of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar during a government event in Mysuru. 'It is customary to welcome guests present at the event. Since the Deputy CM was not there at that moment, his name was not mentioned. BJP is just trying to create a rift between me and Shivakumar. Their efforts to gain political mileage through such claims are mere illusions,' he said. Addressing concerns raised over GST-related tax notices being issued to small traders for digital payments, Siddaramaiah clarified that GST was a central government initiative, and the council functioned under its purview. 'Although it falls under the Centre, we will consult with the Union Government and the State's Commercial Tax Department to arrive at a fair resolution for small traders,' he assured. Responding to media queries about the success of the recent Sadhana Samavesha, the Chief Minister said over two lakh people attended the public rally in Vijayanagara, demonstrating strong public support. 'BJP leaders only peddle lies, while they themselves are replicating our guarantee schemes across the country. Our government has already spent Rs52,000 crore to fulfill these guarantees,' he concluded.
