BAJC: My expectations were met
KUALA LUMPUR: The failure of Malaysia's singles shuttlers to reach the quarter-finals at the Asia Junior Championships in Solo, Indonesia, came as no surprise to national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.
Jonassen said that while the outcome may appear disappointing, it aligned with his expectations going into the recently concluded tournament held at the GOR Indoor Manahan Solo.
"Am I disappointed? Maybe for some individual performances that I thought could have been better. But my expectations were met, so to speak.
"I know where we are. I understand and I fully accept that we have an ambition a lot more than we produced this time," he told reporters during a training session here today.
Malaysia ended their campaign at the Asian juniors without a single medal, with both the singles and doubles departments falling short.
This year's results mark a significant drop from their 2024 performance, when the national junior squad returned with one silver and three bronze medals.
The Dane, who has been working closely with the junior squad over the past several months, said he and his team had identified three key areas for immediate focus moving forward: physicality, tactical discipline and mental resilience.
Although several juniors are currently training with the senior national squad, Jonassen warned against expecting quick results.
"Just because we made some changes, with them now training with the senior team, it's not that easy. Development doesn't happen overnight. It's a long process.
"Everybody wants changes all the time. But actually, what you need is to continue down the path you've already taken, maybe with a few tweaks, and then you can deliver results eventually," he said. — Bernama

Plans To Retrieve Dahlmeier's Body From Pakistan Peak Abandoned
ISLAMABAD, July 31 (Bernama-dpa) -- Rescuers in Pakistan abandoned plans to retrieve the body of twice Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier of Germany to respect her last wish and avoid risking more lives, fellow climber Thomas Huber told dpa on Thursday. Dahlmeier, 31, was swept away in a rockfall close to the summit of the 6,069 metres Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday, her management and local officials said. She was declared dead on Wednesday evening after air and ground operations to rescue her from the Laila Peak in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region was not successful. bootstrap slideshow Pakistani officials said on Wednesday that rescue teams led by international climbers and local high-altitude porters would launch a new operation to retrieve her body. "When we saw Laura's body it was clear that she (had) left us. As experienced mountain climbers we decided to not go and retrieve her body,' Huber, who's in the GB region, told dpa over the phone. 'They body was in a very difficult terrain which would have meant a great risk for the rescue team,' said Huber, also a German who was part of the team that went up to rescue Dahlmeier. 'We decided to respect Laura's last wish. She didn't want anyone to risk his or her life to retrieve her.' Pakistan's northern region is home to several stunning peaks including some towering more than 8,000 metres high. The region attracts hundreds of mountaineers from all over the world including from Europe every year. Accidents, sometimes deadly, are common during these expeditions especially on K2 and Nanga Parbat, both 8,000 meters peaks.

Pape Sarr's halfway line stunner seals Tottenham win over Arsenal
PAPE Matar Sarr scored an astonishing goal from the halfway line as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a fiery pre-season friendly at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium. The Senegalese midfielder capitalised on a defensive error and spotted goalkeeper David Raya off his line before unleashing an audacious 50-yard strike just before halftime. The match, billed as the first north London derby played outside the UK, saw no shortage of intensity despite its friendly status. Arsenal started brightly but Tottenham created better chances, hitting the woodwork three times in the first half. Raya endured a difficult evening, having earlier been caught out of position twice from corners that struck the post. Arsenal dominated possession after the break but struggled to break down a disciplined Tottenham defence organised by new manager Thomas Frank. Gabriel Martinelli wasted their best opportunity, firing over from close range, while substitute Martin Zubimendi nearly scored with his first touch. The crowd of 49,975 erupted when Tottenham captain Son Heung-min entered the pitch late in the game, followed by an even louder reception for Arsenal's record signing Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish striker, wearing Thierry Henry's iconic number 14, showed flashes of promise but couldn't find an equaliser. Tottenham now travel to South Korea to face Newcastle United, while Arsenal return to London after completing their Asian tour with matches in Singapore and Hong Kong. - AFP

Pandelela bugged by shoulder injury, pulls out of world meet
Pandelela Rinong will give the 10m platform individual event a miss to concentrate on healing for her next international outing. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : A recurring left shoulder injury has forced diver Pandelela Rinong to withdraw from the women's 10m platform individual event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore today. The two-time Olympic medallist (one silver, one bronze) said the decision was made after careful consideration, as the injury would prevent her from competing safely or being at her best. 'I'm truly grateful for all the kind messages and concern for my wellbeing. I promise to take better care of my body as I focus on healing and prepare for the next opportunity to represent Malaysia,' Bernama reported her as saying in a Facebook post. Pandelela, 32, said she would continue to cheer on her fellow teammates in Singapore. 'Please join me in sending them our support, luck and prayers as they continue to compete for Malaysia,' she said. On Monday, Pandelela was competing with Lee Yiat Qing in the 10m platform synchronised event when she had to withdraw after two dives because of the injury, which she sustained earlier this month. Lee, 17, failed to advance to the 10m platform semi-finals after finishing outside the top 18 in the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre today. She finished 29th with a total of 240.20 points after five dives. National swimmers Khiew Hoe Yean and Tan Khai Xin also failed to advance in their respective events. Khiew, a two-time SEA Games gold medallist, clocked 50.77s in the men's 100m freestyle to finish seventh in his heat and 50th out of 110 swimmers, while Tan clocked 2m 7.07s in the men's 200m medley to end up ninth in his heat and 40th overall.
