Sabine Parish tourism legend wins Louisiana Rural Tourism Legacy Award
Linda Curtis Sparks received the second-annual Lt. Governor's Rural Tourism Legacy Award to recognize her as a leader in rural tourism development. Sparks is the former director of the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission and formerly served as director of the Sabine River Authority.
'Linda has been a tremendous force within the tourism industry. She began her tourism career in the late 1980s when she oversaw the development of the Toledo Bend Reservoir. She worked tirelessly to develop Toledo Bend as a Sportsman's Paradise top bass fishing destination in the United States,' said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. 'While we have so many deserving individuals of this award, Linda was selected as the 2025 recipient because of her dedication and commitment to attracting visitors off the beaten path.'

Her career has spanned several decades and she is currently developing the Zwolle Museum on the Bend. Sparks has also received multiple awards and recognition in the tourism industry, including the Will Mangham Tourism Lifetime Achievement Award, Economic Development Person of the Year, Rural Tourism Award of the Year, and she is an inductee into the Sabine Hall of Fame.
'Tourism is one of the most powerful economic tools we use to uplift rural communities. It tells our story, brings people together, and creates opportunity where it is needed most. My advice to anyone working to improve their community is simple – be resilient, have patience, persevere, and have faith. Great things take time,' said Linda Sparks.
The Louisiana Rural Tourism Legacy Award recognizes individuals who have retired from the Louisiana travel and tourism industry but continue to work to enhance their community for visitors.

Tesla shakes automotive world with announcement regarding major US facility: 'Nearing completion'
Tesla is moving closer to opening its first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery factory in the United States. The company recently posted a video on X of the factory, located in Sparks, Nevada. In the caption, Tesla said it is "nearing completion" of the facility, which Not a Tesla App reported will manufacture battery cells for Tesla energy projects such as Megapack and Powerwall. LFP batteries are growing in popularity, with manufacturing plants starting to pop up across the globe. Unlike other common batteries, LFPs don't use nickel or cobalt, which makes them lighter, less expensive, and less likely to catch fire. And because those metals don't need to be mined, producing LFP batteries is also a more eco-friendly process. Previous incarnations of LFP batteries weren't powerful enough to replace other battery types, but recent improvements have made them viable alternatives. Until now, Tesla has used Chinese suppliers for LFP battery cells. Plans for the Nevada factory were originally leaked in early 2024, and the company confirmed them during its first-quarter earnings call this year while also discussing the importance of energy storage to the company's future. "The importance of this business … is pretty profound," Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja said during that call. "In order for grids to work properly with the demands from AI, you need some more stability." Domestic production of LFP batteries has the potential to be a game-changer, not just for projects like Megapack and Powerwall, but also for electric vehicles. If battery costs come down significantly, cars will also become more affordable, which could put more EVs on the road instead of polluting, gas-powered vehicles. GM teams up with Redwood Materials to power data centers with EV batteries
GM is sending new and old EV batteries to recycler Redwood Materials, which then repurposes the packs for stationary energy storage storage, the two companies announced today. Second-life batteries from GM have already made their way through Redwood's process and into a 12 megawatt microgrid at the company's Sparks, Nevada, headquarters. Electricity from that installation then flows to a nearby 2,000 GPU data center owned by Crusoe. The microgrid is part of Redwood's new energy storage division that launched publicly in June and focuses on repurposing EV batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Through testing, the company found that many of the cells which arrived at its facilities still had a good amount of life left in them. Rather than recycle the embedded materials, the company kept the packs intact, then connected them to create a large energy storage system that can store excess electricity, often generated by solar and wind, for later use. The batteries for the Crusoe project are fed by solar panels. 'I think this has the potential to grow faster than the core recycling business,' Redwood co-founder and CEO JB Straubel said at the time. Redwood already recovers around 70% of all used or discarded batteries in the U.S. The company plans to deploy 20 gigawatt-hours of energy storage by 2028. Redwood isn't the only company following that playbook, though its ability to integrate a variety of packs — from different manufacturers and chemistries — could give it an edge over competitors. Both GM and Redwood have an existing agreement, but the new collaboration marks an expansion.
