COVID cases: Know about the daily wellness routine to stay prepared and healthy

Hindustan Times18-06-2025
COVID cases are rising, and there are a lot of concerns about the increasing numbers. There's also a variant, which raises questions about its severity and what it means. But instead of panicking, staying well-informed is the first line of protection. With appropriate, reliable information and by staying calm, one can easily navigate this phase with confidence. From knowing the ideal wellness routine to understanding the latest strain, you can stay prepared, protected and proactive during this uncertain COVID season.
HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand the latest COVID-19 developments about the emerging variant, along with practical ways to stay prepared.
Prof. (Dr) Balram Bhargava, former Director General of ICMR and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, who played a central role in managing the COVID-19 response in India, shared with HT Lifestyle about one of the emerging variants and what it means.
'The emergence of the XFG variant is part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus's natural evolution. XFG carries mutations which may enhance its ability to bind to human cells and bypass immune defences. Early reports suggest that the variant has high immune escape potential, but there is no current evidence to indicate increased severity."
Amid rising COVID-19 cases and concerns over the new XFG variant, Dr Bhargava assured about India's diagnostic infrastructure. He said, "However, as the virus adapts, so has India's diagnostic infrastructure adapted since the very first wave. RT-PCR remains the cornerstone of COVID-19 diagnostics, and the widespread deployment of rapid molecular platforms like Truenat puts India in a strong position to detect and contain emerging variants swiftly, even in remote and resource-limited settings. Point-of-care testing played a crucial role during the pandemic then, and it continues to be a frontline tool for detecting emerging variants like XFG. Vigilance is critical now, and do not panic. As we've done in the past, we should continue testing when symptomatic, masking in crowded spaces, and staying up to date with vaccinations.'
Now that you are aware of the emerging XFG variant and what it means, let's focus on staying healthy and building immunity. Dr Bharesh Dedhia, Consultant, Intensive Care at P.D. Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Khar, shared a guide for a daily wellness routine:

Guv to inaugurate new 20,000 sqft Red Cross Society bldg

Mangaluru: Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot will inaugurate the new centenary building of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Dakshina Kannada unit at the old DC office premises, here on July 26. IRCS district president Shantharam Shetty told reporters here on Tuesday that the new 20,000 sqft building, built at a cost of Rs six crore, comprises a basement, ground floor, and two upper floors. The ground floor has an office, visitor's lounge, and a meeting hall, an AC conference hall with a capacity of 300 seats, has been set up on the first floor. A conference hall with a sea view has been set up on the second floor with a seating capacity of 500 people, he said. "Though the foundation stone for the centenary building was laid on 26 cents of land in 2021, the work could not be expedited due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors. The building was completed utilising the CSR funds, contributions from donors, and support from the state govt," said Shetty. The Red Cross office, which operated from a small room in the DC's office, was allocated a dedicated office space in 2007. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Later, the IRCS unit built its own facility in 2011. With the services of the IRCS expanded, the district unit planned to have a larger facility and implemented the centenary building project. "With a 70-year history, the Dakshina Kannada branch of IRCS has been promoting humanitarian values. The IRCS blood bank functioning inside the Government Lady Goschen Hospital has been providing free blood to pregnant women and other patients at the hospital. Patients at Wenlock District Hospital have been given blood at a 50% concession. On average, 500 units of blood are distributed free of cost each month," he said. The DK unit of IRCS has plans to supply free blood to BPL patients being treated at private hospitals. Shetty said there is a need to create a dedicated fund for the project. Efforts in this regard will continue after the new building is made fully operational, he said. The unit also plans to establish an eye bank or a dialysis unit with support from CSR funds and other grants. A disaster management unit will be set up on the ground floor, to train volunteers and stock materials required for rescue operations. The conference halls will be given for programmes organised by NGOs and other organisations on days when there are no IRCS activities, he added. Shetty announced that a mobile application is being developed by a private company for the IRCS Dakshina Kannada unit. The app will be launched during the inauguration.

Jump rope for fun and fitness, a new community rises in Chennai

On Sunday morning, around two dozen individuals — a spirited mix of children, adults, and seniors — gathered at Dr. Natesan Park on Venkatanarayana Road in T. Nagar with one common goal: to jump-start their day with fun and fitness. Armed with colourful jump ropes, they quickly began swinging them and jumping in rhythm. On the other side stood the instructor, G. Aravindaakshan — a self-taught jump rope enthusiast and founder of Chennai Jumps — guiding the group through the nuances of rope jumping. Over the past few months, Chennai Jumps has hosted several workshops, including activities at Chitlapakkam Lake and Anna Nagar Tower Park, among others. 'Jump rope is a tool that is under rated and which is not spoken about. It has a lot of health benefits too,' Mr. Aravindaakshan said. He began skipping during the Covid pandemic and gradually discovered that this simple tool offered much more — with a variety of techniques and possibilities to explore. 'I learnt a lot of techniques from YouTube and Instagram and practiced regularly. This helps individuals physically and mentally. When you jump, your full focus shifts to yourself — where your hands need to be and how you need to jump,' he says. According to Mr. Aravindaakshan, jump rope is a highly accessible activity that can be done anytime, anywhere. 'All you need is a little space to jump,' he says. 'It's also budget-friendly — your only real investment is the rope itself.' Currently, Chennai Jumps includes participants in age ranging from just 5 years old to 66. In the coming months, Aravindaakshan plans to bring this activity to more public spaces and schools across the city. He intends to create a professional academy for jump rope. Mr. Aravindaakshan charges a nominal fee of ₹100 from those joining his community. 'My goal is to create awareness,' he says, 'but I also need to cover the cost of the ropes, so I charge this small amount.'

Equip libraries with digital resources, governor advises state universities

1 2 Lucknow: Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday asked all state universities to equip their libraries with digital resources to make quality study material available to students, researchers, and teachers. While signing an MoU with the Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) Centre for 38 state universities and higher learning institutions, Patel said, "Free flow of information is the need of the hour. This agreement will enhance the quality of education by connecting higher education institutions (HEIs) with national and international research." Stressing on the importance of prioritising research that is relevant, realistic, and socially beneficial, Patel urged universities to address the problems faced by farmers, women, children, rural areas, health, defence, and society. She advised technical universities, health centres, and research institutes to focus on innovations and patents. Giving the example of the vaccine developed by Indian scientists in a short time during the Covid period, the governor said, "We have the resources as well as the talent. If we work with commitment, we can make India a leader in the field of research." She added that the manuscripts available in university libraries prove that our sages and saints did very high-quality research work, which needs to be re-awakened and taken forward today. On the occasion, the governor was honoured for three world records. The first was for conducting Surya Namaskar on June 21 for 14 lakh participants. The second was for organising a mass reading campaign, 'Padhe Vishwavidyalaya/Mahavidyalaya, Badhe Vishwavidyalaya', which saw 15.7 lakh participants reading books.
