Grizzlies announce injury update for rookie Jaylen Wells after hard fall
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after a hard fall this week, the team announced on Friday.
Wells was hospitalized after he was undercut on a dunk attempt during a win over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday. He left the court on a stretcher and was taken to a local hospital after about a 20-minute game delay as the Grizzlies' training staff and EMTs tended to him.
The 39th pick was released from the hospital on Wednesday with a fractured right wrist, a facial laceration and a concussion. He is expected to make a full recovery, but will likely miss the Grizzlies' last two games of the regular season and postseason.
Wells finishes the season averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 35.2% shooting from 3-point range in 79 appearances. He is fourth in the rookie class in total scoring (823 points) and was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in October and November.
The 21-year-old had appeared in every game for the Grizzlies before the incident. He became a full-time starter for former head coach Taylor Jenkins in their sixth game of the season and remained in that role after emerging as a key figure in the frontcourt.
Wells was selected to the Rising Stars Game at NBA All-Star Weekend in February and was among the front-runners to win Rookie of the Year for much of the season. He is the only second-round pick averaging at least 10 points per game.

It seems that the Fever will not have Caitlin Clark back on the court for a few more weeks, according to an ESPN report. The network's hoops reporter Holly Rowe said during a report on Sunday's nationally televised broadcast of the Fever-Sky game that the third week in August could provide the best circumstances for the WNBA superstar to return. Clark has dealt with several injury issues this season, most recently suffering a right groin injury on July 15 against the Sun, which was the last game she has played in. While she does remain day to day, that's seems like a better timetable for a possible Caitlin Clark return.' Sunday was the fourth straight game the 2024 Rookie of the Year has missed due to injury and her 13th game this season that an ailment has kept her off the court. While Clark didn't play, she was on hand for the game, which is an often anticipated event when the Clark-led Fever and Angel Reese's Sky square off against one another. He didn't run away and hide a year ago, but he was clearly the best car from the jump. We haven't gotten a true Alex Palou beatdown of a weekend since the spring, and it feels like we're due. How will Team Penske fare this weekend? I certainly don't expect a win.
