Fish and chip shop powered by electric cars in UK seaside town

In celebration of National Fish and Chip Day on 6th June, the quaint seaside town of Deal in Kent served up 300 free portions of chips to delighted locals and visitors, with a side of battered fish while stocks lasted.
The event wasn't your typical British fish and chip experience, though – the shop was fuelled by two electric vehicles and spearheaded by none other than TikTok star, the 'Chip Shop Diva' herself, Destiny Harold.
The outlet's unique frying solution was powered by the Dacia Spring, celebrated by its makers as the 'cheapest electric vehicle' available. This venture was a collaboration with The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar.
This inventive twist on the traditional chippy came about after a survey involving 2,000 adults identified fish and chips as the most craved indulgence during a British holiday.
The survey also spotlighted other holiday favourites such as cream tea and hot doughnuts, Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Classic British foods like fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream, and pie and mash also made the list of the top 20 holiday treats.
Speaking about the occasion, a representative from Dacia said: "It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery."
They added: "It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside."
The study showed that 41 per cent of adults associate such foods with nostalgia, and 45% report feeling satisfied after indulging in them. Furthermore, 44 per cent regard fish and chips as the 'food of the people', asserting that social class does not doesn't impact how people eat it.
Food psychologist James Cornish said: There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips."
He added: "There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight.
"Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through delivering more than we expected."

UK seaside village 'like Lake Como' has very cheap fish and chips

The small village in Wales is no typical UK beach location Brits longing for an idyllic escape might consider jetting off to distant exotic destinations, but there's an overlooked treasure right on our doorstep. Portmeirion, tucked away along the Dwyryd Estuary in North Wales, breaks the mould of your average UK coastal spot. Wander into this village and you could easily believe you've landed in Italy, thanks to its captivating array of Mediterranean-style buildings, sun-kissed beaches, and charming boutiques. And the icing on the cake? ‌ It's reportedly home to some of the UK's most reasonably priced fish and chips. Last year's statistics show that visitors typically spend just £8.57 on this beloved dish, according to Capital on Tap. ‌ This placed the coastal gem as the third most economical for fish and chips, trailing only behind Southwold in Suffolk and New Brighton in Wirral. What's more, it's got great TV history behind it, having been the location for the filming of hit British TV show The Prisoner. Portmeirion has also caused quite a stir online, too. Influencer Meera Pankhania is among those smitten with its scenic beauty. "My boyfriend and I were meant to go to Portugal that weekend but as it went on Amber list, we visited here as an alternative and then climbed Mount Snowdon," she said in a previous TikTok reported by the Mirror. "We stayed there for two days and while I've never visited Italy myself, I felt like I was in Lake Como. To arrive at the place, you travel through some beautiful roads and beautiful scenery." Located in the heart of Gwynedd, the enchanting village of Portmeirion was brought to life by visionary architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who devoted five decades to shaping the site after purchasing the land in 1925. Today, the village boasts a remarkable assortment of nationally significant listed buildings, including the stunning Grade I Listed Portmeirion Town Hall, built in 1938. However, you might be shocked to learn that Portmeirion doesn't have any permanent residents, as its primary focus is on catering to tourists and holidaymakers. ‌ In fact, the village operates on a schedule, generally opening its doors to visitors from 9.30am to 6.30pm, seven days a week, during the peak summer season. Beyond its impressive infrastructure and unbelievable chippy prices, tourists also sing praises about Portmeirion's afternoon teas too. In 2024, one visitor took to TripAdvisor to share their thoughts on this, writing: "The best afternoon tea in the world, in the one of the nicest places. The village is stunning and we really made the most of it, being amongst the last to leave. "We had afternoon tea in the hotel, which was absolutely delicious." Meanwhile, another added: "There is no other place in England like this, it is so SO unique and amazing. ‌ "If you only visit ONE place before you die, hopefully not just yet! then come here. It is SO lovely! We spent hours here, we did have afternoon tea here and if the weather had been better and we could have gone on the coastal and woodland walks, we would happily have stayed from opening to closing time." So, it seems that for those seeking an affordable beach escape this summer, Portmeirion might just be the perfect destination.

Sport stars pay tribute to late Doddie Weir in birthday video

Rugby stars Kenny Logan and Rob Wainwright and other sporting legends have paid tribute to the late Doddie Weir in a video released on what would have been his 55th birthday. The video has been created to honour the memory of Weir, and the legacy of the foundation he set up to find effective treatments for motor neurone disease (MND) after he was diagnosed with it in 2016. Weir founded the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation in 2017, and died in November 2022 aged 52. Those in the video include Olympic swimming medallist Duncan Scott, Olympic curling medallist Eve Muirhead, broadcaster and ex-footballer Ally McCoist, former England rugby player Mike Tindall and British and Irish Lions fly-half Fin Smith. Supporters from across the UK will wear Doddie tartan to work on Friday July 4, as part of a tradition marking what would have been the former rugby player's birthday. Kenny Logan, who played alongside Doddie as part of the 1999 Five Nations-winning Scotland side, said: 'Doddie was a leader in life, and he remains a leader in death. 'His memory inspires thousands of people, both inside and outside of the MND community, to take action and help bring an end to this devastating disease. 'We all know Doddie should still be here with us. He brought light and laughter into every room, even in the darkest days. It's up to all of us to dig deep, keep fundraising and finish what he started. 'We do it because we miss him. We do it because we love him. And we do it because nobody else should have to go through what he and his family did.' The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has now committed almost £20 million to targeted research projects and launched a Catalysing A Cure strategy to speed up the search for effective treatments. Earlier this year it pledged £4 million to the MND Discovery Network, a new UK-wide initiative connecting leading scientists to accelerate progress. The film also features Jennie Starkey, who is living with MND and is part of the Foundation's Discovery Network board. The video comes after the end of the Doddie's Lions Challenge, in which a team led by Logan and including Ally McCoist, Gabby Logan, and Doddie's widow Kathy, cycled 555 miles around the island of Ireland in five days to deliver the match ball for the British and Irish Lions vs Argentina fixture in Dublin. The ride has so far raised almost £650,000 for MND research. My Name'5 Doddie Foundation chief executive Nicola Roseman, said: 'Doddie's spirit continues to galvanise the MND community. 'The outpouring of support and emotion on what would have been his 55th birthday shows just how many lives he touched and how much his story still matters. It also reminds us that there is still work to be done. 'Every birthday that passes without Doddie is another reminder of the urgency of our mission.'
