TOKYO: Japan's Fast Retailing, owner of the Uniqlo clothing brand, on Thursday maintained its full-year forecast, expecting early shipments of its products to the North American market to limit the impact of higher US tariffs. US President Donald Trump has set a new August 1 deadline for "reciprocal" tariff rates, which will affect nearly all trading partners unless negotiations in the coming weeks lead to reductions. "FY2025 impact is likely to be limited, whatever the tariff rate," Fast Retailing said in an earnings statement, adding it has already shipped a substantial number of products to the US. The majority of Uniqlo products sold in the US are produced in Southeast Asia and South Asia. In a letter on Wednesday, Trump notified that Sri Lanka, a major apparel exporter to the US, would face a 30 per cent tariff from Aug 1. Its competitor Vietnam faces a lower 20 per cent US tariff, but trans-shipments from third countries through Vietnam will face a 40 per cent levy, Trump said last week. Fast Retailing said operating profit in the three months to May 31 rose 1.40 per cent to 146.70 billion yen (US$1.00 billion), below a consensus forecast of 153.80 billion yen based on a LSEG poll of five analysts. The company kept its full-year operating profit forecast at 545.00 billion yen.

7-Eleven Parent Delivers Strong Quarter As Takeover Heat Builds
Seven & i Holdings posted a 9.7% rise in operating profit for its March–May quarter, driven by stronger performance from its overseas convenience store business, outpacing analyst expectations as the company faces pressure from a US$47 billion takeover bid by Canada's Alimentation Couche-Tard. The Japanese retail giant, which operates the 7-Eleven chain, reported an operating profit of ¥65.1 billion (US$445.2 million), surpassing the ¥58 billion average estimate from six analysts polled by LSEG. While domestic convenience store profits declined, the group benefited from higher margins in its US operations due to an expansion of proprietary products and better labour cost management. Net profit also received a boost from asset sales by its retail unit, Ito-Yokado. As part of ongoing restructuring efforts, Seven & i has announced a share buyback, divested non-core assets and is planning a public listing of its North American convenience store business. The company spent around ¥156 billion on share repurchases as of end-June. Despite the earnings beat, Seven & i shares closed down 1.6% ahead of the results and are down 13% year-to-date. Volkswagen US deliveries fall as Trump tariffs bite
FRANKFURT: Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen said Wednesday that sales into the United States had taken a hit, underscoring the impact of President Donald Trump's drastic trade measures. Total vehicle deliveries into North America fell almost seven percent in the first half of the year, the German group said, even as overall deliveries worldwide notched a rise of 1.3 percent. In the three months to June -- a period dominated by the fallout of Trump announcing 25-percent tariffs on cars in late March and further sweeping duties in April -- deliveries to North America plunged 16.2 percent. In China, a key market where European carmakers are struggling against the electric models of local competitors such as BYD, first-half deliveries fell just over two percent. Marco Schubert, board member for sales at the firm, said the declines were 'expected' and that 'gains in South America and Europe more than offset' the impact. Trump has announced a wide range of duties in a bid to boost US manufacturing, but promptly suspended the implementation of many of them before inviting countries to seek trade deals after markets plunged worldwide. Though April's 'Liberation Day' tariffs have been paused until August 1, a 25-percent tariff on imported cars that are not largely made within North America remains in force. Carmakers have rushed to find ways to minimise the impact of the levies, with high-end automaker Mercedes-Benz on Monday saying it had delayed some US deliveries in the expectation of tariffs coming back down. Stuttgart-based Porsche reported Tuesday a 10-percent rise in its first-half North American sales, saying it had plentiful stocks in the region and that increased import tariffs had offered a degree of 'protection' for its cars. But overall first-half sales fell at both firms after being dragged down by China, with Porsche's deliveries in the country down 28 percent and Mercedes-Benz's car sales falling 14 percent. – AFP
