New museum 'last chance' to save Blackpool's trams

BBC News07-04-2025
Campaigners have urged people to get behind a new visitor attraction as part of a "last chance" bid to help save a town's fleet of heritage trams.A workshop in Blackpool has been repurposed by volunteers to house the historical vehicles and is set to open later this month as the Tramtown exhibition centre. It is part of a heritage project aimed at securing the future of the tram service which was suspended by council-owned Blackpool Transport in December due to safety fears.Tramtown volunteer and Blackpool councillor Paul Galley said the vehicles were "fundamental to the DNA of Blackpool".
Mr Galley said it was hoped opening the exhibition centre would help support a bid for grant funding of up to £5m from the National Lottery.
Workshops at Blackpool Transport's Rigby Road have been re-purposed to become the Tramtown centre as other parts of the depot needed roof repairs, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.Volunteers have spent the last few weeks smartening up the centre with paint, new lights and a shop in time to welcome the public back from Good Friday.
Mr Galley said: "This is the last chance to save these heritage trams and if it doesn't work we will lose them as there will be nowhere to store them. "It's about protecting them and in time being able to recruit new engineers to maintain them."Jane Cole, managing director of Blackpool Transport, previously said the aim was to restore the heritage trams later this year. But she said there were "a number of complex operational issues that need to be addressed" before they could take to tracks once again.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk reunite to win 2025 Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby

The US president and his former DOGE leader – AKA Davie and Alastair Grant from Kirkcudbright – saw off all-comers to retain their crown. Donald Trump and Elon Musk patched up their differences to take victory in the Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby on Sunday. ‌ The US president and his former DOGE leader – AKA Davie and Alastair Grant from Kirkcudbright – saw off all-comers to retain their crown. ‌ One of the organisers, Matt Mckerlie, said: 'People will maybe say it was controversial but it was certainly entertaining!' ‌ Cyber Trump was one of 13 racers which tackled the King Street course, thousands of people lining the road to enjoy the action – and the glorious weather. Matt added: 'We certainly had a good day and we've a lot to learn from, like we do every year. 'We want more carts and we want more people to get involved and help out and set up. 'A lot of people turn up on the day and help out and off the back of that are joining a team. 'We got the road cleared up on Sunday night and there was no sign that we'd been there. ‌ 'The team started at 6am on Sunday morning and were probably out until 11pm. 'People came from all over the UK to watch and we're hoping for 40 teams next year. 'Programmes didn't sell as well as we thought they would, we easily had 500 left. ‌ 'I know people are struggling for money but it probably costs about £25,000 to put the event on. 'The programmes are £3, are a showcase for our sponsors and help fund the derby.' ‌ An army of volunteers helped put on the event, with fundraising taking place across the year to ensure it goes ahead. Support also came from the National Lottery for the first time, with much of the equipment now belonging to the derby rather than having to be hired. Paterson ATV, CAM Engineering, William Hall Removals and Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities also provided vital support, with Adam Blaikie from Signature Woodwork the master builder. • Feedback can be provided through the Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby page, with a survey available for people to complete.

£4m Lotto win puts Harley-Davidson fan on the road to early retirement

A Harley-Davidson lover is planning an easy ride into retirement after winning nearly £4 million on the National Lottery. Jon Waring, 57, has already handed in his notice at Devon and Cornwall Police where he has worked as a radio operator for 16 years. Meanwhile, his wife Lucy, 48, is working her notice as a nurse at Torbay Hospital. The couple, from Paignton in Devon, who have a 15-year-old daughter, are planning to take life at a more relaxed pace thanks to the Lotto jackpot win. They already have their bucket list planned out with a Harley-Davidson trike bike topping the shopping list for Mr Waring, while a hot tub is the number one priority for his wife. A new family home in the Paignton area is also high on the wish list. Mr Waring said his huge win, which saw him match six numbers in the Lotto draw on May 31 still does not feel real. 'I keep thinking I am going to wake up from a dream,' he said. The family are all keen musicians and plan to create a music room in their new home where they can all play as well as listen to their favourite bands. 'This will be the perfect place to display the family's guitar collection – and potentially add to it too,' Mr Waring said. 'As a family, we love rock music and now the world really is our oyster – we hope to get the chance to attend gigs up and down the country. 'This win will just enable us all to slow down, enjoy life – and of course hit that road on the sunny days ahead on our new trike.' Mr Waring woke at 4am to discover he had won the £3,966,543 jackpot. 'Something just made me go to check my emails and I saw an email saying I had won a prize,' he said. 'I went to Google the winning numbers and noticed there was just one winner – and knew it must have been me. 'I couldn't quite believe it – I knew they were my numbers. I turned my tablet off – left it five minutes – and then turned it back on to double and triple check. 'I woke Lucy, and she said, still half asleep, 'Is it April 1?'. I said no, it is June. 'We just could not believe it – there was no way we were getting back to sleep. We just sat and drank tea – we must have had 10 cups between us.' Mr Waring, who is also a keen rugby fan, said a box at Exeter Chiefs and a trip to see the Lions tour are also on his wish list, together with a new car, an Audi Q7. 'It's a complete change of lifestyle – it won't change us, but it will change what we can do. And the pace at which we do it, too.' He said with the nature of his job, and his wife's, it has been hard to get holidays to match up and the couple do not even have current passports. 'As a result of our shift work, we have not had a proper holiday together for a long, long time,' he said. 'We are now really looking forward to booking something and knowing we can just holiday when we choose. Perhaps a trip to New Orleans for the music. 'It's all the things you dream about trying and seeing but know you never will, until something like this happens.' Mr Waring has always played Lotto each week since the game started and now plays online.
