SPM top achievers to get full scholarships at UniKL, UPTM, says DPM
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said students, who obtained 10As and above, would be eligible for the scholarships if they choose to pursue higher education at both institutions.
"The initiative is to ensure outstanding students are provided an opportunity to further their studies without any financial burdens. Insya-Allah (God willing), if the student obtains 10As and above, UniKL and UPTM will approve their applications.
"I have referred the matter to the Mara (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) director-general (Datuk Zulfikri Osman) and it has been agreed by its chairman (Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki)," he said when launching the national-level Yayasan Pelajaran Mara (YPM) squad at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee Hall here today.
Present were Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Asyraf and YPM chairman Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said.
Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, said students with 5As to 7As would be given an opportunity to further their studies at UniKL and UPTM.
Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) chairman, assured students with less-than-stellar SPM results that they could choose to join the TVET programme.
"What about students who secured only three credits in their SPM? Do they have a chance to further their studies?.... Do not worry, as they can choose to pursue further studies at 1,399 TVET institutions in the country.
"Since the TVET intake for July was opened on April 15, 126,000 applications have been received from students nationwide. TVET promises a bright future," he said.
Zahid said TVET was no longer a second choice and Mara, through YPM, would continue to serve as an institution to support the welfare and education needs of the youth, including those with low academic grades.
On the YPM squad, Zahid described it as a strategic initiative designed to strengthen youth for a greater role as agents of change in social, educational, and community development.

Malaysia now net chicken importer again as supply fails to meet demand
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has once again become a net importer of chicken, with domestic production no longer able to meet local demand, a concerning shift after achieving full self-sufficiency in 2021. The development was revealed by the Agro-Food Productivity Nexus (AFPN), which expressed concern over the nation's food supply security, despite Malaysia's overall improvement in global competitiveness rankings. According to highlighted data, the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) for chicken dropped to 90.2 per cent in 2023, a significant decline from the 100.2 per cent recorded in 2021, indicating that the country is now reliant on external sources to meet domestic demand. While Malaysia has made gains in the World Competitiveness Ranking, key indicators for the agro-food sector, such as price competitiveness, productivity and innovation, remain sluggish and underwhelming. AFPN said that the issue goes beyond the number of chickens farmed and involves the entire supply chain. Although chickens are reared locally, the sector remains heavily dependent on imported animal feed. This dependence leaves the country's poultry industry highly vulnerable to global shocks such as wars, pandemics, and currency exchange fluctuations that could suddenly inflate production costs. Commenting on the issue, Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) director-general Datuk Zahid Ismail said food security is not solely about supply, but also about long-term resilience and competitiveness. "We must remove systemic barriers, open pathways for innovation, and create an ecosystem that enables farmers to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national productivity," he said. In response, AFPN called for more targeted and responsive policies to strengthen food security. Among the proposed measures are easing entry for new farmers, supporting the expansion of existing operations through better land access, restructuring of approval processes, and reducing bureaucratic red tape. It also emphasised the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of digital technology in agriculture. However, Zahid cautioned that efforts are being hindered by inadequate internet connectivity in rural areas. "Digital adoption is a key driver of agro-food productivity, but connectivity must come first. Immediate, targeted investment in rural digital infrastructure is vital so that no farmer is left behind as the nation moves towards smart agriculture," he added. As such, AFPN is urging the government to fast-track the sector's modernisation through investments in smart farming, empowering young agropreneurs, and fostering strong public-private partnerships to build a more secure and resilient national food system.

ROME: Potential investments worth RM8.13 billion have been achieved through the Malaysia-Italy economic cooperation roundtable meeting and meetings with companies here, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The roundtable meeting involved the participation of 41 Italian companies and agencies, comprising 23 companies from the manufacturing sector, nine companies from the service sector, two companies from the trade sector as well as five government agencies and two industrial organisations. 'The potential investments achieved through these two meetings are worth RM8.13 billion in the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services and equipment sectors,' he said at a press conference at the end of his visit to Rome, Italy. The roundtable meeting allowed potential companies in Italy an opportunity to express their desire to collaborate with Malaysian companies in various sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anwar said that in a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Rome and Putrajaya would increase cooperation in the energy, solar, geothermal and hydrogen sectors. In the discussion, the Prime Minister said he also applied for recognition of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification from Italy, in addition to requesting support for a fairer assessment of the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) Implementation. Malaysia aims to be in the low-risk category in the EUDR benchmark system when the rating is reviewed by 2026. Meanwhile, Malaysia has also sought Italy's support in concluding negotiations on the Malaysia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Prime Minister arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to Italy, the third largest economy in the EU. The visit was at the invitation of Meloni. Throughout the visit, Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. For the period from January to May 2025, total trade between the two countries continued to show positive performance with an increase of 3.3 per cent to US$1.48 billion (RM6.5 billion) compared to the same period in 2024.
