Former Real Madrid Goalkeeper Keylor Navas Joins Pumas In Mexico
'I'm here eager to give my all, to push myself, and to be on the pitch playing at my best,' Navas said. 'I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.'
No details were given but Newell's Old Boys said it will receive $2 million as part of the deal.
Navas and Ramos played together for five seasons with Madrid, winning three Champions League titles. The pair also joined forces at Paris Saint-Germain where they were part of the team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2022.
The 39-year-old Ramos signed with Mexican team Monterrey earlier this year.
'Sergio told me a little about his experience in Mexico. I know James (Rodriguez) is also here and playing at a high level,' Navas said at a press conference. 'Liga MX is growing and is very competitive, with a very good infrastructure, and I thought I'd come to a club where we can compete for titles.'
James Rodriguez, who played with Navas and Ramos for four seasons with Madrid, also plays in Mexico with Leon.
Pumas had already bought Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Colombian left back Alvaro Angulo and Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite.
Navas also called Herrera, who had coached six first division teams in Mexico before he was hired as coach of the Costa Rica men's national team as it attempts to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
'I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me I should sign without a doubt,' Navas said. 'I'm joining a big club, and having him in the national team helps you make these decisions.'
Navas also made the decision to move closer to Central America because his national team has World Cup qualifying games, starting in September, with 'Los Ticos' in Group C with Honduras, Haiti and Nicaragua.

Women's Euro 2025: Spain being ‘the best team of the tournament' wasn't enough to win trophy, says Aitana Bonmati
Being the most skillful and technically best team at the Women's European Championship wasn't enough to get Spain the title on Sunday. The 2023 World Cup winner and 2024 UEFA Nations League title holder still does not have a European title for its stellar generation after a penalty shootout loss to England in the final after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Spain trailed for just four minutes' play across six games in the entire tournament. England led for barely five minutes' play in its three knockout rounds games — and none against Spain. 'We were the best team of the tournament, but sometimes that's not enough,' Spain star Aitana Bonmatí said. Bonmatí cut a sad figure walking to the trophy ceremony platform to collect her trophy as the best player of the tournament, which she began days after being hospitalized with a bout of viral meningitis. Bonmatí's spot kick in the shootout was one of two saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Mariona Caldentey, whose 25th-minute headed goal seemed to set Spain on track for victory, also had her penalty saved. Caldentey also went close to scoring a second time in the first half, in which tournament top scorer Esther Gonzalez had three chances to score. Early in the second half, Caldentey's Arsenal teammates Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo combined to level the score on Russo's header. 'I'm a bit in shock,' Bonmatí said. 'It was cruel. We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough. It all came down to the penalties.' 'I'm sorry for my miss,' said two-time Ballon d'Or winner Bonmatí, whose teammates Caldentey and Alexia Putellas also failed from the spot in a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Switzerland. 'I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling,' Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments. Spain captain Irene Paredes said it was 'hard to look for the positives so soon. Right now, it's a very tough moment.' 'England were happy just to reach penalties but, in the shootout, we didn't perform well,' said Paredes, whose Barcelona team also lost the Women's Champions League final in May to an English opponent, Arsenal. 'To be a champion you need some luck, and I believe they had it.' Spain still is a world champion and will soon prepare to start qualifying for the defense of its title. The 2027 World Cup is being played in Brazil. 'We will be back,' Bonmatí said. 'There will be a World Cup in a couple of years, and that's our goal now. This is a golden generation, with a lot of young players.'

Dejected Bonmati hopes to bounce back stronger after UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final loss to England
Spain playmaker Aitana Bonmati cut a disconsolate figure as she picked up her Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2025 on Sunday, minutes after her side finished as runner-up after losing a penalty shootout to England in the final. Bonmati bounced back from a meningitis scare ahead of the tournament to play a crucial role in Spain's progress to the final. However, on Sunday, Spain struggled to unlock the England defence and Bonmati missed her spot-kick in the shootout as she slumped to another painful defeat following her club side Barcelona's Champions League final loss to Arsenal in May. 'It's hard to see you right now,' she told reporters. 'Two months ago I found myself in this situation with the club. You have to value more when things are going well, we have been better on the pitch, not on penalties,' she said. The 27-year-old apologised to the Spanish people for not being able to deliver a victory against an England side that was no match for them in terms of skill, but who refused to give up. 'I assume my part of my responsibility, I play for the team and for many more people. There is no point in playing a better game and missing penalties,' she said. ALSO READ: Spain coach Tome says her team deserved more after shootout loss to England 'For me, England is a team capable of not playing well and winning. There are teams that don't need much to win.' England took the chance it was offered, and though Spain found itself on the losing side, Bonmati was philosophical. 'We haven't lost a game (in 90 minutes), we have received support and I feel bad about that too. We have won off the field of play, and that is valuable too,' she explained, before promising to come back stronger. 'We are a trained team, we have already shown that we know how to overcome. We hope to reach (Euro) 2029 at full capacity and try again.'

Former England footballer and Inter Miami owner David Beckham has said that Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is a player that he has admired for a long time and as a leader, he has contributed well to the teams he has played for, and hence, he brought him into Inter Miami. Speaking to the media on Saturday, July 26, Beckham opened up on De Paul's move to Inter Miami, saying that he would be a crucial footballer for the team. Miami, meanwhile, used the pre-game festivities to unveil new star signing De Paul, Lionel Messi's World Cup-winning Argentina team-mate. 'He brings experience, passion and quality to the team. Rodrigo is a player I've admired for many years. As a leader, he's contributed greatly to the teams he's played for, especially his national team, Argentina," Beckham said. De Paul said that he is keen on competing for trophies, acknowledging that the Inter Miami management was building a special side. 'What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, win titles, to write the pages in the club's history. It's a club that is shaping up to be great, to have a long history, so that many people follow this incredible team," De Paul said. The 31-year-old left Atlético Madrid, where he's played for the last four years, for Major League Soccer on a short-term contract with Inter Miami that could lead to a multiyear deal. De Paul and national team buddy Messi hope to continue to elevate Inter Miami, which has reached historic heights since Messi arrived two years ago. The Herons reached the knockouts of the Club World Cup and have won their past five Major Soccer League games as they eye a second straight Supporters' Shield. The deal, which has been in the works for multiple weeks, comes as negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami on a contract extension remain ongoing. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
