Young survivor of Parnell Square stabbing returns to school full-time

The young girl who was seriously injured in a stabbing incident on Parnell Square is now back attending school full time.
The six-year-old was critically hurt outside a Gaelscoil on Dublin's Parnell Square in November 2023. Two other children and a carer, who also sustained injuries, received treatment in hospital before being released.
On Thursday, an update on the girl's GoFundMe brought some good news from the girl's family, who confirmed that she is back in school. "For us who see our angel warrior every day, it is more difficult to notice advances and changes in her, but for those who see her less often, her progress is clear," the family shared.
"She has been attending school full-time. She is not attending mainstream school, just to clarify.
"The staff at this very special institution have gone above and beyond (in our eyes) to make our little girl feel part of the group, even after joining mid-school year. We are forever grateful to the love and dedication everyone has shown her.
Her family also said she has been "attempting different sounds" and that her happiness is "infectious". They continued: "We have had some challenging days; we all go through them, even if we wouldn't like a six-year-old to have to.
"As summer approaches, we are so happy to be able to spend it at home, hoping to spend days outdoors, smell the warm air, enjoy the sun and the sea." The young girl spent over a year undergoing intensive rehabilitation in Temple Street Children's Hospital after the incident.
Her family have been keeping everyone updated on her recovery journey through GoFundMe. The online fundraising campaign, titled Barróg do Chailín Beag (A Hug For A Little Girl), has managed to raise nearly €133,000 so far.

Thousands raised for schoolbus crash victims

Wellwishers have raised more than £15,000 (pounds) for the families of victims involved in a fatal school-bus crash in Somerset, UK, earlier this week. A 10-year-old boy died in the accident, while six other children, and three adults, are still being treated in hospital for a range of injuries. The accident happened when the school bus left the road, the A396 at Cutcombe Hill near Minehead, and slid down a 20ft slope on Thursday afternoon. Pic: Ben Birchall/PA Wire/PA Images The bus had been carrying around 70 pupils and staff from Minehead Middle School, who were returning from a trip to Exmoor Zoo days before the end of the school term. An off-duty firefighter who just happened to be travelling behind the coach was able to start working to free some of the passengers from the bus immediately after the crash, but crash investigators say recovery of the vehicle and the investigation into the crash is complex. The road is still closed and will remain so until next week. Emergency services near the scene of a bus crash on the A396 Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe, near Minehead. Woman conned out of $15,000 after AI used to clone daughter's voice

Sharon Brightwell, who lives outside Tampa in Florida, said she was targeted by scammers last Wednesday after receiving a call from a number that appeared to belong to her daughter, April Monroe. When she picked up, Ms Brightwell heard her daughter's hysterical voice claiming she had hit a pregnant woman with her car while texting and driving. 'There is nobody that could convince me that it was not [her voice],' Ms Brightwell told WFLA-TV. 'I know my daughter's cry, even though she's an adult, I still know my daughter's cry.' Ms Monroe was in Carrollwood, a nearby suburb at the time, she wrote on a GoFundMe page to help recoup her mother's money. After you hear your child in distress, all logic is out the window 'My voice was AI-cloned and sounded exactly like me,' Ms Monroe wrote. 'After you hear your child in distress, all logic is out the window.' A man then took the phone and claimed to be Ms Monroe's attorney. He told Ms Brightwell he needed $15,000 cash to pay her bail. She couldn't tell the bank what it was for, or her daughter's credit would be affected, the man said. 'He says, 'Can you do that?' I said 'Not really, but yes,'' Ms Brightwell told WFLA. 'I'll do whatever I have to do for my daughter.' Ms Brightwell withdrew the money from her bank and put it inside a box, which she then gave to a driver who showed up at her house. Soon after, Ms Brightwell received another call from someone claiming to be a relative of the pregnant woman her daughter supposedly hit. They said the woman's unborn baby had been killed in the wreck and they wanted $30,000 cash, or else they would sue. Ms Monroe says her son was with Ms Brightwell the whole time and was in 'just as much panic and worry'. He realised it was a scam after Ms Monroe texted him on her lunch break. 'Then it all came together,' Ms Monroe wrote. 'My mom and son were in absolute shock.' Evil is too nice a word for the kind of people that can do this Ms Monroe immediately left to go and be with her mother and son. Ms Monroe's son 'hunched over to throw up' when he first saw her and realised she was safe, she said. 'To tell you the trauma that my mom and son went through that day makes me nauseous, and has made me lose more faith in humanity,' Ms Monroe wrote. 'Evil is too nice a word for the kind of people that can do this.' Ms Brightwell and her family encourage people to take proactive steps to prevent scams, such as coming up with a 'code word' to use in emergency situations, WFLA reported. Ms Monroe said she had filed a police report, and an investigation is under way.

‘Design of pool' led to Brit friends drowning in Algarve as cop who attended scene rubbishes claims they were drinking

IT was the design of the pool where two Brit pals were found drowned in Portugal that caused their deaths, a cop has said. But a police source has told Portuguese daily Correio da Manha that it was the design of the pool combined with the Speaking on condition of anonymity and without knowing the results of the autopsy, the source said: 'It's not a case of excess alcohol or drugs." 'Everything is pointing to this being a terrible accident with two people who didn't know how to swim.' Read more on world news The source explained: 'it is a very weird swimming pool. 'It has shallow water in most of the pool but a very deep approximately three-metre pit in the middle. 'The two men were seen talking with some girls by the pool and then went to the pool and got into difficulties in that deep middle part. 'They weren't able to swim. It's not a case of excess, but an unfortunate accident in a bizarre swimming pool.' Most read in The Sun The pair tragically drowned less than 24 hours after arriving in the holiday hotspot.
