The Toronto Blue Jays are in first place in the American League East after sweeping a four-game series from the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays' next task will be to stay there, starting Friday night with the opener of a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
Toronto took a one-game lead over the Yankees and the idle Tampa Bay Rays with an 8-5 win over New York on Thursday. It is the first time the Blue Jays have led the division this late in the season since 2016, when they finished in a wild-card spot. They last captured the East title in 2015.
The Blue Jays have won 49 of their first 87 games for the first time since 1993, the last time they won the World Series.
They hope George Springer remains hot after he went 8-for-14 (.571) with four home runs, 11 RBIs, four walks and seven runs against the Yankees. He is batting .513 (20-for-39) with four homers and 19 RBIs in his past 11 games.
'He can put you on his back and carry you,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'I'm never going to count George Springer out of anything.'
He leads the team with 15 home runs after going deep twice on Thursday.
The Angels, meanwhile, are back to .500 after defeating the host Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Thursday in the decisive game of a three-game series. Los Angeles is set to complete its six-game road trip against the Blue Jays, who will be finishing off a seven-game homestand.
Toronto is scheduled to start left-hander Eric Lauer (4-1, 2.60 ERA) on Friday. His only career outing against the Angels was a relief outing on May 6, when he threw one pitch to retire the only batter he faced.
The Angels are scheduled to start right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 4.66 ERA). He is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in three career starts against Toronto.
Los Angeles won two of three games against the Blue Jays in Anaheim, Calif., from May 6-8.
The Angels got a boost on Thursday from shortstop Zach Neto, who went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer and a stolen base. In his previous five games, he went 0-for-13.
'Just being aggressive,' Neto said of his approach. 'It's been my game the whole year. It's just a matter of getting my pitch and not missing it.'
The Angels will be without rookie second baseman Christian Moore, who landed on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left thumb. Moore, who jammed the thumb on a diving attempt at a catch on Wednesday, hopes for a quick return.
'I think it's pretty much up to my body and how it heals itself,' he said.
Chad Stevens was promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Moore's roster spot. Stevens started at second base on Thursday and went 0-for-4 in his major league debut.
Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette did not start any of the games against the Yankees after stepping on a ball during batting practice that resulted in a sore right knee. He did return on Thursday as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and finished the game at shortstop.
The Blue Jays have a run differential of plus-9, by far the worst among division leaders, which suggests they are overperforming in terms of wins and losses.
'There are lots of ways to win,' Schneider said. 'There's not one recipe to win, and I think that expected win-loss, yeah, there's some truth to that. It's making a play when most other people wouldn't. It's taking an extra base when most others wouldn't and putting a ball in play when most others wouldn't. We're OK with that. That's how we're built.'

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw on the cusp of history vs. White Sox

(Photo credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images) The countdown to 3,000 will be at the forefront when Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw takes the mound Wednesday night against the visiting Chicago White Sox. The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL Most Valuable Player is three strikeouts away from becoming the 20th pitcher in major league history to reach 3,000 in his career and just the fourth left-hander. The others: Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson and CC Sabathia. Kershaw also is set to become only the third pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters while playing for just one team, joining Walter Johnson (Washington Senators) and Bob Gibson (St. Louis Cardinals). 'A chance to strike out three at home (will) be really cool,' said Kershaw, whose home accomplishments include his first-ever strikeout in 2008 when he set down the Cardinals' Skip Schumaker. Kershaw (4-0, 3.03 ERA) has earned the win in each of his past four starts, allowing one run on two hits over six innings Thursday in a 3-1 victory at Colorado as he inched closer to his milestone with five strikeouts. 'For him to be able to do it in the home whites, it's going to be fun, exciting,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. It will be just Kershaw's sixth career start against the White Sox. The 37-year-old is 2-1 against Chicago, with a 2.90 ERA. Los Angeles earned a 6-1 victory in Tuesday's series opener when Shohei Ohtani hit his 30th home run of the season, while Andy Pages and Michael Conforto each drove in two runs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run over seven innings. Ohtani now has at least 30 home runs in five consecutive seasons. The White Sox received two hits and their lone RBI from Lenyn Sosa on Tuesday. Chicago is the worst-hitting team in baseball with a .220 batting average and is in the bottom third of the major leagues with 736 strikeouts after adding 12 on Tuesday. Now they are poised to be a part of Kershaw's historic night. 'Very good pitcher obviously (and) still performing well,' White Sox manager Will Venable said of Kershaw. The two were teammates on the Dodgers for a brief time in 2016. 'Probably going to be able to spin the ball for the rest of his life,' Venable said. 'Just a competitor that presents a lot of problems for hitters on both sides. We'll have our work cut out for us.' Chicago is set to send left-hander Brandon Eisert (2-1, 4.33 ERA) to the mound in a likely opener role. He has made 36 appearances (two starts) and thrown 35 1/3 innings with 41 strikeouts. Still classified as a rookie, he appeared in three games in 2024 for the Toronto Blue Jays. He has never faced the Dodgers. White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas, who was traded from the Dodgers last season as part of a three-team deal that landed Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech in Los Angeles, received his World Series ring before the game on Tuesday. Vargas is on a 1-for-25 slide with 10 strikeouts over his past seven games after going 0-for-4 in the series opener. Chicago rookie Chase Meidroth, who grew up in nearby Manhattan Beach, went 0-for-4 in his first career game at Dodger Stadium.--Field Level Media

Cubs' Matthew Boyd faces his old team as Guardians visit

(Photo credit: David Banks-Imagn Images) In 2024, Matthew Boyd revived his career as a member of the Cleveland Guardians. He's managed to build on that comeback this season with the Chicago Cubs. Amid a stretch of five quality starts in six outings, the left-hander tries to extend the offensive struggles of his former team when the Cubs open a three-game set with the visiting Guardians on Tuesday night. Recovering from Tommy John surgery, Boyd (7-3, 2.65 ERA) signed a one-year deal with Cleveland nearly one year ago. He proved vital down the stretch for the Guardians, going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA during eight regular-season starts and had an 0.77 ERA over three in the playoffs. With Chicago, the 34-year-old Boyd essentially picked up where he left off, and has been brilliant in his last six starts (3-1, 1.49 ERA). He yielded three hits without a walk over six scoreless innings during Wednesday's 8-0 win at St. Louis. 'Regardless of the day, I know what I expect of myself,' said Boyd, who boasts a team-leading 11 quality starts. 'Regardless of what happened the day before, regardless of what tomorrow potentially may bring, what I do doesn't change. What I expect of myself when the ball is in my hand doesn't change.' While the Cubs have dropped seven of the last 11 following Sunday's 2-0 loss at Houston, and hold a slim two-game lead in the National League Central, Boyd's buddies in Cleveland are currently in much worse shape. The Guardians were 29-22 on May 24, but have averaged 3.0 runs while going 11-20 since. During their current four-game losing streak, Cleveland has been outscored 27-6 and shut out three times. Cleveland managed just three hits and made two errors during Sunday's 7-0 home loss to St. Louis. However, manager Stephen Vogt remains the optimist -- at least publicly. 'We've got 13 games in a row coming up after this off day (Monday),' Vogt said. 'We have an opportunity to get it rolling, and that's the way I look at it. 'This is a really talented team. I believe in each and every one of these guys, and I know we're going to break out of it.' Cleveland star Steven Kwan is 2-for-21 in the last five games, but 9-for-17 in the last four on the road. Meanwhile, fellow star Jose Ramiez is 2-for-19 in his last five overall. Including the 2016 World Series, Ramirez is just a .188 hitter in 13 career games at Wrigley Field. Scheduled Guardians starter Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.68 ERA) will make his first appearance against the Cubs. The right-hander was charged with four runs (three earned) while yielding five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings versus Toronto on Wednesday. Williams opposes a Cubs offense that is second in the majors with 453 runs scored, though Chicago has been held to two or fewer 11 times during its current 15-14 stretch. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has blossomed into a star this season with 21 homers and 62 RBIs, but he's 3-for-24 in the last six contests. However, outfield mate Kyle Tucker is batting .291 and has hit four of his 17 home runs in the last nine games. --Field Level Media

Blue Jays designate RHP Jose Urena for assignment

Field Level Media 05 Jul 2025, 09:24 GMT+10 (Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday designated right-hander Jose Urena for assignment. The 33-year-old has appeared in 239 MLB games in his career. In 2024, he went 5-8 with a 3.80 ERA in 33 outings for the Texas Rangers. Urena signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets during the offseason. On April 28, he made his season debut, allowing five earned runs in three innings of relief against the Washington Nationals. After only one game, the Mets designated him for assignment, and he elected free agency, signing with the Blue Jays. In Toronto, Urena posted a 3.65 ERA across 12 1/3 innings. In a corresponding move Saturday, the Blue Jays recalled left-hander Easton Lucas from Triple-A Buffalo. The 28-year-old already has thrown 21 2/3 innings for Toronto this season, producing a 2-2 record and a 5.82 ERA. --Field Level Media
