My Best Shot aims for historic Sophomore Series clean sweep at Fairview
A half-brother to the Eastern Cape's 2022/23 Champion two-year-old colt, Questor, My Best Shot races in the interests of Nick and Val McFall, Messrs GL Blank, G Piha, HN Yutar, D Yutar, and Mr and Mrs AC Greeff . He was purchased for just R120,000 at the Cape Yearling Sale and has provided his connections an enormous amount of fun.
'He's a progressive type with a strong temperament and a good work ethic,' says Greeff. 'He's taken every step in his stride, and we've been pleased with how he's handled each race.'
Much of the credit must also go to jockey Richard Fourie, who has partnered with My Best Shot in all but one of his career runs.
However, the 2,400m distance of the East Cape Derby is a significant step into uncharted territory. To date, all of My Best Shot's wins have come over either 1,400m or 1,600m. Whether he can stay the testing Derby trip remains to be seen, but his connections are optimistic. 'It's a challenge,' Greeff acknowledges. 'But he's in good shape and we're going to give him every chance.'
Should he complete the series sweep, My Best Shot will enter the record books and highlight the value of structured regional racing programmes like the Sophomore Challenge in helping the Eastern Cape to produce competitive and consistent performers.
The Derby meeting on May 9, which also features the Dahlia Plate, promises to be one of the highlights of the local horse racing calendar.
Public entrance to Fairview Racecourse is free, but if you want to experience the excitement in style, book a VIP hospitality package with 4 Racing. Priced at R350 per person, it includes a buffet lunch, Computaform guide, and a complimentary bottle of wine per table.

Siwelele FC boss brags about being Minister Gayton's son
Despite shying away from his father's last name, Calvin Le John introduced himself as the son of Minister of Sport, Art and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, after addressing supporters of his newly acquired football club, Siwelele. The businessman- the firstborn of the former convict – recently purchased the club, previously Supersport United, for R50 million in a closed business deal. In his first speech, Siwelele FC's new boss introduced himself to the club's supporters. 'I am Calvin Le John, the firstborn of the Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie', he told a crowd of football fans at their general meeting last week. Calvin touched on his relationship with Gayton, and their love of the Bloemfontein Celtic club – nicknamed Siwelele – which later became Royal AM. 'On the day I was born, my father was sentenced to 17 years [for armed robbery]. From the day I was born until the age of 10, the only connection we had was through the visitors' section at Grootvlei [prison]. Becoming emotional, he added: 'In my family, one of the only things that brought us happiness was Siwelele'. @l_keezy021 Gayton McKenzie's son Calvin Le John donates R100,000 to supporters and gives his first speech as the Chairman of Siwelele football club in Bloemfontein #southafricatiktok #gaytonmckenzie #gayton #latestnews #incaseyoumissedit #southafricantiktok🇿🇦 #southafricatiktok🇿🇦 #fyp #fypageシ ♬ original sound – L_Keezy021 Since Calvin Le John acquired Siwelele FC, many South Africans have accused Gayton McKenzie of having a hand in the closed business deal. Others claim he would use his position as Minister of Sport to further the club's interests. Responding to the rumours, Gayton said in a Facebook Live: 'People act like we took money from under our mattress and we just went to go buy a club. Gayton McKenzie has heaped praise on his son, Calvin Le John. Images via Facebook 'He bought it, I'm not part of the company….There's no consortium, he owns 100% of the company alone'. Gayton added, 'I'm very proud of him. He doesn't want to trade on McKenzie's name; that shows you he is different.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Last batch of BT Football Academy players who were stranded in Portugal land in Cape Town
CAPE TOWN - The last batch of 15 young football players and one of the coaches, who were left stranded in Europe after a botched football tour, have landed at Cape Town International Airport. Thirty-four young footballers and four coaches flew to Spain earlier in July for a football tour arranged by BT Football Academy. The academy failed to book return flights despite participants paying R50,000 each for the trip. Nineteen players and three coaches have since returned to Cape Town safely, with the rest of the squad having just landed on Thursday afternoon. Zukiswa Dlelembe from Mowbray said that she could not wait to see her son, Anathi. "I'm so excited. I couldn't sleep last night. I think it's because of excitement and because we've been through hell in the last few days. I was not sleeping even, not having appetite. But now I'm very excited, I can't wait to see my son." The young players who are from areas across Cape Town were split into three groups, with at least one coach accompanying them for each trip.
