Antiques Roadshow guest has six-word response to ‘rust bucket' bicycle's staggering price tag
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Antiques Roadshow.
An Antiques Roadshow guest couldn't help but chuckle when he discovered the true value of his old bicycle.
Expert Adam Schoon was on hand at the Newcastle Civic Centre to meet with guests to film another exciting episode of the iconic BBC daytime series.
Presented with an old bicycle, Schoon stated: 'I'm a really keen mountain biker, I'm used to carbon fibre, Kevlar, aluminium, and you bring me a rust bucket. Where did you get your rust bucket?'
The guest shared: 'I got it from a house clearance shop in North Shields, luckily. It was lying at the back of the shop beside this old sofa and I just saw it lying there and I had a feeling that was going to be worth a bit of money.
'So what I did was, I did a little bit of research on the internet and I discovered there was one in America that was worth quite a bit of money.
'I thought 'right, how am I going to get this on the tube?' So I went and picked a few other items in the shop like lights and things like that, and I made the guy an offer of £300 for the whole lot. Overall, it cost about £200.'

The bike's owner then shared that it had just one handle at the time of purchase before adding a second handle.
Schoon said: 'Just getting down to brass tacks, the bike is made of two things, wood and iron. Original handle there and this one was an old -'
'An old file handle', the guest, who works as an engineer, clarified. 'So what I did was I drilled the end, carved it a bit and varnished it.'
The expert queried: 'And the seat looks a bit later, did you add that on?' before the guest remarked: 'No it was covered in an old piece of cloth actually and it was stapled on the bottom. I rather liked the wood so I filled the wood worm holes in and cleaned it up and varnished it as well.'
Schoon then admitted: Well when I first saw it, I really didn't know if it was a fake or whether it was real.
'Let's have a quick look just here and here. Two rivets which you can see are handmade, this is a hand-wrought bicycle. It's got tyres made of iron. This was before pneumatic, pump-up tyres.'
Schoon continued: 'Now originally, if this is right, it would have had a leather seat. Obviously just a little bit of token comfort. You're sat basically on a spring and that's it. What must have charmed you was the fact it's for a child.'
'Yes, I haven't seen anything like it before. It's quite fascinating," the guest said.

But when the expert asked if he would let his own child 'loose on a bike like this today', he laughed: 'Absolutely not!'
'I think you've got the feeling that it is actually a period one from the 1880s and it is indeed an American one', the expert said.
'They call them high wheelers and in fact the men who used to ride penny-farthings as we used to call them, were called wheel men or wheeler men.'
He then concluded: 'It owes you the equivalent of £200. In this condition, it's clearly worth £2,000.'
Upon hearing this figure, the guest's voice cracked as he exclaimed 'What?' and laughed. 'You have done well', Schoon said.
Still beaming from ear to ear, the guest added: Goodness. Knock me over with a feather, goodness me. £2,000.'
He shook his head as the expert praised: 'Yes, so you had a very good eye, good for you.' Unable to stop smiling, the owner added: 'Incredible.'

American in UK visits impressive service station that's 'like a theme park'
An American woman has said she's finally come to understand why Brits have a favourite service station after visiting a Welcome Break in the UK she compared to a theme park UK service stations are typically quite basic, offering a couple of eateries, a shop and toilets for travellers in need of a rest on the motorway. However, one Welcome Break UK services is drawing visitors from far and wide. An American woman was left astounded after her recent visit at the Yorkshire service station, describing it as "exquisite". Situated of the M1J33 near Rotherham, the service station boasts an array of popular chains such as Starbucks, Pret A Manger, Burger King, Chopstix, The Good Breakfast, KFC, Waitrose, and WHSmith. Not only does it offer top-notch facilities and a variety of dining options, but the service area - which opened its doors in January this year - also provides 458 parking spaces for various types of vehicles. Plus, it has resulted in the creation of around 230 new jobs. Iniki, an American woman who relocated from Florida - a state known for its large 'petrol stations' - hailed the Rotherham Welcome Break as "the nicest UK service station." In a recent TikTok post, Iniki said: "I think I finally understand when Brits say they have a favourite service station because this service station was exquisite. This is a brand new Welcome Break in Rotherham and I was thoroughly impressed." The woman, who is married to a British man, likened it to "kind of looks like a little town" and said it reminded her of Universal Studios. She described her experience as akin to "a walk in the park." The American was also impressed by the variety of dining choices, gaming section and children's play area. "So yeah, I never understood the hype about service stations until now," she added. One person remarked: "As someone who was born in Rotherham, it's strange hearing an American say it haha. Driven past this service station many times but never been in. Looks nice!". One declared it's "probably the best thing" in Rotherham. "Nicest place in Rotherham," chimed in another. "Wow, it's really nice," noted someone else. A further user commented: "I love a good service station. It's kind of like you're going on holiday, slight airport vibes without the planes or security."

Cadillac have chosen the two F1 stars they want to sign for 2026
Team principal Graeme Lowdon is said to have settled on the two Formula 1 drivers he wants to sign for Cadillac ahead of their debut season in the sport next year Formula 1 newbies Cadillac are said to have decided which drivers they want to lead their charge on track in their debut season. The American outfit will become the sport's 11th team when it debuts next March at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. With just one year to get everything in place, team principal Graeme Lowdon has plenty on his plate from hiring staff to setting up manufacturing processes and designing their first ever F1 car. Plus, of course, he must hire two drivers to get behind the wheel of those machines next season. During a recent podcast appearance, Lowdon offered seven names as he shed some light on the decision process. Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Felipe Drugovich, Frederik Vesti, Arvid Lindblad and Colton Herta were the drivers he mentioned as he discussed Cadillac's options. And it appears he has narrowed down his options further by choosing his two preferred driver options. Lowdon told Mirror Sport earlier this month that he would prefer "experienced" options and he seems to have stuck to that. Speaking on F1 TV ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, correspondent Lawrence Barretto was speaking about the situation of Bottas who is a man in demand. Back at Mercedes as a reserve this year after losing his Sauber race seat, the Finn is wanted by Alpine but also seems to be a leading candidate for Cadillac. "The more likely landing spot for him is Cadillac," said Barretto, who also revealed the name of the other driver in pole position for a seat. "I hear that they haven't got any contracts done, not even any ahead of terms, but Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are the two drivers that they want at that team. "It's just a case of them going through the motions with it. It might be some time until we find that out. Obviously, there is still some time for that to change, but that's where we're looking I think. "That's where I think it's going, which makes sense because Valtteri could maybe use the Alpine interest to maybe get a better deal. They want experience, and those two drivers offer that in bags." Both drivers are multi-race winners throughout their long F1 careers. Bottas won 10 races over five seasons as team-mate to Lewis Hamilton during his first spell with Mercedes, while Perez is a six-time race winner himself, five with Red Bull after his maiden success while still at Racing Point. Should Cadillac end up contracting those two racers, it will be a tough pill to swallow for Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese racer, now reserve at Ferrari, is also looking for a way back onto the grid and may have been expecting to be a front-runner, given Lowdon was previously a member of his management team.
