BBC Says 'Unprecedented Funding Challenge' Lies Ahead As Content Spend Set To Fall By $200M

BBC Says 'Unprecedented Funding Challenge' Lies Ahead As Content Spend Set To Fall By $200M

Yahoo31-03-2025
The BBC faces an 'unprecedented content funding challenge' in the year to come, the corporation's Annual Plan setting out priorities for the next 12 months has said.
As we have reported in depth so far this year, the BBC flagged 'co-production partnerships with global streamers and media companies [that] have reduced across the sector' as contributing to the major challenge.

'Without intervention, it will be difficult to maintain the current ambition and volume of UK content,' said the plan.
The much-publicized drop-off in the American co-pro market has left numerous BBC shows stuck in funding limbo, although today's Annual Plan didn't go into further detail around these shows, which we know includes the likes of its Shuggie Bain adaptation.
The BBC did, however, reveal that its content spend for the coming 12 months will slide by £150M ($200M) to £2.5B. This figure does tend to fluctuate and is often dependent on whether there is a big sporting event coming up in the summer, which there isn't in the next 12 months.
Having forecast a surplus for this year after an enormous £492M deficit last year as part of a 'transformational budget,' the BBC in fact posted another deficit – although a far lower £33M 'due to some delayed transformation costs,' the report said. The BBC's group income will be just over £6B and license fee income is set to rise by around £100M to £3.9B, which is helped by an increase in the annual fee but 'partly offset by a 1% decline in the number of licence fee payers,' according to the plan.
The BBC unsurprisingly raised concerns about future funding challenges but used the plan to passionately argue that it is the premier maker of British content. It cited research that found 16% of UK adults agree that Netflix shows the lives of people in the UK, compared with 64% for the BBC. This comes with Netflix's Adolescence dominating headlines worldwide, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying in the past few minutes that the show about teenage masculinity and the damaging impact of social media 'hit home hard.'
'As viewing shifts to international platforms, consumption of British content is at risk,' said the BBC plan. 'The BBC invests more in original British creativity than anyone else, keeping the UK's creative economy strong and supporting new talent across the sector.'
The BBC said viewing across its TV channels and iPlayer is more than Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ combined, and ahead of YouTube and TikTok combined. Adolescence has topped the UK ratings charts for the past couple of weeks.
The document revealed plans to 'move more creative spend, programming and journalism outside of London to better represent and reflect audiences,' citing upcoming examples like Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd's new show Half Man, which is made with HBO.
BBC Commercial, meanwhile, which incorporates BBC Studios, will 'continue to invest in infrastructure, services and content.'
BBC Director General Tim Davie said: 'We are focused on our mission to deliver value for all, through our journalism, our storytelling and our unique ability to bring people together. The UK's creative industry continues to change rapidly, as does the world around us. This plan sets out how the BBC continues to evolve for audiences, both on and off air, but also how we will support and invest in the wider industry.'

All we know about Alistair 'Yellow' Douglas today, the musician last seen with missing Amy Bradley

Viewers of Netflix's latest true crime drop, Amy Bradley Is Missing, a three-part documentary examining the sad case of a young woman named Amy Lynn Bradley, who disappeared during a cruise ship holiday with her family in March 1998. At the time, she was just 23 years old. More intriguing still, since then there have been multiple rumoured sightings of Bradley, everywhere from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao to Barbados and California – yet her family are still desperately seeking an answer and concrete evidence as to where she could be. In the Netflix series, one person who was pointed out to be a person of interest in Bradley's case was a musician, Alister 'Yellow' Douglas, whose band was playing on board the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Rhapsody of the Seas, when she vanished. Reports were made that Douglas had been seen dancing with Bradley in the early hours of the morning before her family raised the alarm that she was nowhere to be found. Douglas always denied any wrongdoing and that he played any sort of rule in Bradley going missing. Here, we take a deep-dive into who Alister 'Yellow' Douglas is, what he's said about Amy Bradley's case and where he is today. Alister Douglas, better known by his nickname 'Yellow' (a nod to his signature brightly dyed yellow hair), was once a vibrant presence aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas, thanks to his turn at playing bass guitar in the ship's live band, Blue Orchid. When Amy Bradley vanished in the early hours of 24 March 1998, during what should have been a dream family holiday, surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony placed her with Douglas in the ship's nightclub just hours before she disappeared. The two were seen dancing together, and reports suggest they were also spotted on the deck after midnight. As one of the last known people to see Bradley, Douglas became a key figure in the investigation. The FBI grilled him extensively, and he even agreed to take a polygraph test, which he reportedly passed. Despite the scrutiny, no charges were ever filed against him, and he faded from the investigation as authorities pursued other leads. After the intense scrutiny from media and the police, Douglas became relatively anonymous over the following decades with his whereabouts were unknown – until late 2024, when investigative journalist James Renner, who has a YouTube channel dedicated to true crime, uncovered Douglas's surprising new life. Now in his 50s, Douglas has traded his bass guitar for a Bible. He resides in a remote mountain community in Grenada, where he serves as a reverend. His congregation is small—40 to 50 members—and his church is described as a 'humble shack' perched on the mountainside. But what's perhaps most striking about his new life is his practice of exorcism, a dramatic turn from his days as an entertainer. Speaking on Renner's YouTube channel, Douglas recalls Bradley approaching him after his set and telling him that she played saxophone, her dad was an insurance manager who had recently discovered she was gay and forced her to go on the cruise (something her family have denied), and that she was smoking a lot. "About five minutes to one I said 'I have to go, I have to be out of passenger area' and I left. That was my last conversation, last time I saw her," Douglas states, contradicting the three witnesses who claimed to have seen her on the upper deck with Douglas between 5:30 and 5:45am. Later in the interview he adds, "Around 7 o'clock, I was awakened by a call by the hotel manager and he asked me 'Douglas, do you have a woman in your room?'. It was forbidden, it was forbidden dating [...] And I said 'no' and I asked why, he said 'The woman you were talking to last night in the club, we can't find her'." After, as per Douglas' account, the ship was then grounded and nobody could enter or exit. "Everybody was interrogated," he said. "Lie detector tests... At that time, they didn't say anything much to me, they took the [wires] off me." Douglas added that an FBI agent later interviewed him on multiple occasions, telling him again that he was clear. "I've lost so many opportunities because of this," Douglas shared. "Once my name was entered [into Google] they would say I had something to do with this missing girl and I would lose the contract. "The truth, no matter how long it is, always surfaces." Jeff Tweedy Will Fight Our Dark Times With a New Triple Album

If you're a fan of Jeff Tweedy, you know that he writes a lot of songs. Not just in the sense that he's spent more than 30 years leading Wilco through one of the most rewarding and varied catalogs in American music, although that's also true. On the most literal level, Tweedy generally writes at least one song every day. 'I sincerely feel a need to have that in my life,' he told Rolling Stone in 2020, the year that he published a great book about this daily practice. 'I feel better when I do it, and I try not to miss days. It's like working out or something, almost.' All that songwriting has left Tweedy with enough strong material for a new triple album, Twilight Override, out Sept. 26 via Wilco's own dBpm Records. You read that right — three discs, 30 songs total. This is his first solo release since 2020's Love Is the King, which means this album represents something like the top 1.6 percent of all the songs he's written in the last five years. (Please don't check that math.) The crème de la crème, if you will. More from Rolling Stone Wilco's 'A Ghost Is Born' Box Set Is Full of Surprises and Treasures Jeff Tweedy on Garth Hudson: 'He Was Like a Sorcerer' Wilco and Waxahatchee Set U.S. Spring Tour Along with today's announcement, Tweedy has released four excellent new songs to help you get a handle on all this music. 'One Tiny Flower,' the first song on disc one, is a meditative folk song with a nervous energy pushing it forward. 'Out in the Dark,' from disc two, is an easygoing amble in brighter hues, with some fun burbling studio noises as the song goes on. 'Stray Cats in Spain,' from disc three, is a plunge into headier waters, with swirling strings and no audible percussion — just beautiful stuff. And 'Enough,' which is both the final track on the album and its 'radio single,' is an upbeat, catchy burst of folk-rock sunshine, complete with a sweet electric guitar solo. Right away, just from these songs, it's clear that Twilight Override is some top-shelf Tweedy, and they make you want to hear more. You can tell that he is on fire right now, creatively speaking. In a press statement, Tweedy explains that he sees creativity as a way of standing against all the darkness in the world today. 'Sort of an endless buffet these days — a bottomless basket of rock bottom,' he writes. 'Which is, I guess, why I've been making so much stuff lately.' It's hard to argue with that if you look at the news in this country and the rest of the world. He goes on to bring it back to his personal perspective: 'Whatever it is out there (or in there) squeezing this ennui into my day, it's fucking overwhelming. It's difficult to ignore. Twilight Override is my effort to overwhelm it right back.' Tweedy recorded and produced Twilight Override at Wilco's Chicago studio, the Loft, with a band made up of some trusted collaborators: his sons Spencer (on drums) and Sammy (on synth and vocals), plus guitarist James Elkington, bass player Liam Kazar, and singers Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart (a.k.a. Chicago duo Finom). Some of the titles on the track list are familiar if you've attended any of Tweedy's solo shows in recent years or perused his Substack; others are surprises. One of them is called 'Lou Reed Was My Babysitter.' He's also announced a slew of solo tour dates, most of them taking place in October and November. (Before that, Wilco will spend August playing a few nights on the Outlaw Tour with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, followed by a run of 'An Evening With Wilco' shows.) You can find all those solo tour dates, along with the full track list for Twilight Override, below. Buckle up — it's going to be a very Tweedy fall. Track List Disc 1 1. One Tiny Flower2.
