Money managers are betting Indian banking and consumption stocks have further to run this year, benefiting from the central bank's aggressive policy rate cuts to lift economic growth.Asset managers, including BlackRock Inc., Aberdeen Group Plc and Smartsun Capital Pte. have started aligning portfolios on expectations rate cuts will boost bank profits by lowering what they have to pay on deposits, while consumer companies' earnings will improve as customers' take out loans and spend. The shift signals monetary policy is shaping to be the key driver of India's $5.4 trillion equity market, which has struggled compared to some of its peers this year due to concerns over corporate earnings and rich valuations. The macro backdrop for many sectors in India is 'going to improve over the next 12 months' largely due to the central bank's easing, said Prashant Periwal, a portfolio manager for emerging markets equities at BlackRock. 'The more domestic sectors such as financials and discretionary consumption are likely to do better and that is how we kind of are positioning the portfolio.'Periwal's fund holds lenders such as HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd. and Axis Bank Ltd., which have all surged at least 10% this year, compared with an 8% rise in the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index. The Nifty Bank Index hit a fresh record on July 1 after gaining for four straight months, while the NSE Nifty India Consumption Index has advanced 16% since its March low, marginally outperforming the broader gauge. Upbeat first-quarter business updates by companies such as pizzamaker Jubilant Foodworks Ltd. and jeweler Kalyan Jewellers India Ltd. signal room for more gains. Most of the credit for the rally goes to the Reserve Bank of India — it has injected more than $100 billion of liquidity into the market this year, and its 50 basis points interest-rate cut last month came as a surprise to the market.'RBI's easing is helping bank stocks to outperform and other rate sensitives will also come around to participate in the rally,' said Sumeet Rohra, a fund manager at Smartsun. 'The easing lowers the cost of funds and boosts earnings per share and return on investment which overall leads to rerating of valuations.'India's stock market remains expensive. The broader equity benchmark trades at about 21 times of its one-year forward consensus earnings estimate, compared with about 13 times for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. A shift in RBI's policy stance to neutral also indicates the room for future rate cuts may be limited.Read More: India's $5.4 Trillion Stock Market Is Slowly Losing Its EdgeBut historical data supports the sense of optimism. The last two times the RBI slashed the rates by half-a-percentage point, in April 2012 and September 2015, the banking gauge beat the benchmark index over the subsequent 12 months. After a 75- basis-points cut during the pandemic in March 2020 both the gauges gave similar gains. The RBI's measures 'are steps in the right direction to boost growth, which could be reflected on the ground in the second half of the year,' said Rita Tahilramani, a Singapore-based investment director at Aberdeen. 'We are taking the opportunity in this correction to buy' stocks across sectors, she said.

Dreamliner among safest aircraft, over 1100 in use worldwide, Air India officials tell parliamentary panel

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Members at a meeting of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday expressed concern over air safety and surge in price of air tickets from Srinagar to other cities after the Pahalgam terror attack and sought clarifications from the officials present, sources said. The sources said members mentioned the Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, in which over 250 people were killed, and sought clarification on air safety. The sources stated that Air India officials conveyed that the Boeing Dreamliner aircraft, which crashed in Ahmedabad while en route to London, was one of the safest aircraft in the world. The officials are also learnt to have told the panel that over 1,100 Dreamliners are in use in different countries. The meeting was attended by officials of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Ltd. (AAICLAS), and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Representatives of airport operators and airlines were also present. The agenda of the meeting was 'Levy and regulation of fees, tariffs, user charges on public infrastructure and other public utilities'. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson was among senior airline officials present at the meeting. Some MPs said the air fares had gone up drastically after the terror attack causing inconvenience and hardship to people. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Praful Patel asserted that there is no need to panic as all airlines, including Air India, follow safety protocols. However, Patel, a former Civil Aviation Minister, highlighted that there is need of more people in the DGCA as they are facing a shortage of top-level skilled manpower. 'Safety is paramount. Anyone who flies wants to feel safe and assured that he will reach his destination... Indian aviation is safe. There is no need to be panicking about it. All airlines, including Air India, follow safety protocols. DGCA is well-equipped and does a very good job. DGCA needs to have more people because they are facing a shortage of top-level skilled manpower. A lot of retired people can be brought back for a short period so that understaffing can be addressed at the higher level to ensure that the safety standards are complied with,' Praful Patel said. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said airlines have given assurance to address concerns over surge pricing of air tickets. 'In the meeting, we talked about the Buddhist Circuit. There are very important places that are significant in Buddhism. All countries and places significant to Buddhism will be interconnected. Airfare hikes were also discussed, especially the ones post Pahalgam terror attack and during Maha Kumbh... Air safety was the most discussed issue... The black box investigation of the Ahmedabad plane crash is currently underway, and the Dreamliner is supposed to be one of the safest aircraft,' Pal said. Congress MP and PAC Chairperson KC Venugopal mentioned that the Committee has asked the airlines to have clear-cut regulations on fares. 'Everybody is concerned about the safety... We are discussing the increase in air fares also, especially post Pahalgam and during Kumbh... The committee has asked them to have clear-cut regulations on fares... DGCA and airlines were also part of the meeting,' Venugopal said. On June 12, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It struck a hostel building of BJ Medical College, killing 241 of the 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has submitted its preliminary report to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and other authorities. According to sources, the crash protection module (CPM) from one of the black boxes was retrieved, and the data was successfully downloaded on June 25 at the AAIB Lab in Delhi. To verify the data, an identical unit known as a 'golden chassis' was used. The investigation is being led by the AAIB Director General and includes experts from the Indian Air Force, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the US-based National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is the designated investigation body from the country of the aircraft's design. Aviation medicine and air traffic control experts are also part of the team. According to officials, this is the first time India is decoding black box data domestically. On June 25, the memory module was successfully accessed and its data was downloaded at the AAIB Lab, the official said. (ANI)

RBI announces ₹1 trn reverse repo auction on July 9 to absorb liquidity

India's central bank said on Tuesday it will conduct a two-day variable rate reverse repo auction worth Rs 1 trillion ($11.67 billion) on July 9 . The move follows the central bank's decision last week to conduct a seven-day variable rate reverse repo auction worth Rs 1 trillion, which was held on July 4. Earlier, on June 24, the RBI scrapped its plan to conduct a 14-day main operation scheduled for June 27, instead announcing a seven-day variable rate reverse repo auction. The RBI's measured approach to withdrawing banking system liquidity will likely keep overnight interbank lending rates between the policy repo rate and the floor of the policy corridor, analysts said, allowing some policy transmission. The central bank cut its policy rate by a steeper-than-expected 50 basis points last month, shifted its stance to 'neutral', and halted liquidity infusions. It resumed absorption operations on June 27 after overnight rates fell below the policy corridor.

"Something which Rahul Gandhi had cautioned": Congress targets Centre over Jane Street's alleged market manipulation, demands accountability

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Modi government, alleging gross regulatory failure in the wake of accusations against American algo-trading giant Jane Street Group. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate claimed that the firm manipulated Indian stock and derivatives markets between January 2023 and March 2025, earning illegal profits of over Rs 44,000 crore, most of which was allegedly siphoned off to the United States. 'An American algo-trading company, Jane Street, started operations in Indian in 2020. It dealt in both the share market and the derivative market. It was dealing in such a large volume that it was manipulating stock price in share market and was earning illegal profits in F&O market. Between January 2023 and March 2025, it earned a profit of around Rs 44,000 sent this profit to America. SEBI has now issued an order that they are seizing Rs 4400 is suffering due to this? Small investors of this country - something which Rahul Gandhi had cautioned about again and question is that when Jane Street tells US Court that they earned 2.3 billion dollars due to inefficiencies in India, when market investors are writing to you, why did you stay silent? Why did you not do anything?' Shrinate said. The Congress leader further questioned the government's silence, calling for answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and demanding that steps be taken to recover the remaining funds from abroad. 'The Government will be questioned now because Narendra Modi and Amit Shah pose as market experts and offer suggestions on the stock market, now when people are losing their money and company is earning profits illegally and sending to the US, what would you do now? You can't be silent. Would you be able to speak with Donald Trump and retrieve the money?' Supriya Shrinate said. On July 3, SEBI in its order noted that the US-based firm used a profit-maximising scheme to manipulate the market and booked substantial profits in index options, while incurring smaller losses in the cash and futures segments. SEBI further stated that Jane Street Group entities, despite caution letters from NSE in February 2025 and their own commitments to refrain from certain trading behaviours, continued to deploy the same high-risk and market-distorting strategies. SEBI sources later said that the interim order against the index manipulation matter concerning Jane Street should not be considered a show-cause notice. The investigations into the US-based investment firm will continue, the sources had added. 'It is difficult to estimate how long all this (probe) could take - the scope is quite large,' the sources had asserted. (ANI)
