Man's reunion with dog after LA fires inspires pet protection bill
The bill is inspired by the reunion of Casey Colvin and his dog, Oreo, who was found alive in the rubble of the Palisades fire in Los Angeles.
Last month, California Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur announced AB 478, also known as the FOUND Act (Friends of Oreo Uniting During Disasters).

If approved, the bill would require local governments to update emergency pet rescue procedures, provide online resources for pet eviction and reunification, and hold rescued pets for at least 90 days before adoption or euthanasia.
The act aims to ensure pet owners have procedures and resources available to reunite with their pets during disasters. Additionally, it seeks to prevent pet owners from endangering themselves by attempting unauthorized rescues.
'Pets are more than just property — they are family. When disaster strikes, no one should have to choose between their safety and their pet's survival,' Zbur said in a statement.
The inspiration for the act comes in part from Colvin and his beloved Pomeranian, who were separated after Oreo went missing during fires that ravaged their Los Angeles neighborhood. But, after five days, the pair were reunited.

Colvin told 'NewsNation Live' Monday that once the bill is passed in California, it's important to implement bills like this nationwide as so many states are getting hit by natural disasters.
'If you're in a situation where you can't get to your animals, hopefully this legislation will help you get to where you need to go to take care of your animals,' he said. 'Also, if your animals escape during a disaster, they'll help you reunite with them afterwards.'
The bill is sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation.

Lost Pomeranian charms Como Pool staff, falls for coach's rescue dog
A surprise visitor made a splash at Como Park Regional Pool – a small Pomeranian with no leash, or tags, quickly discovered his charm. "This little dog wandered up through the gates, at first I didn't bat an eyelash," said Como Pool Staff Member Clara Chaput. "I was the only one sitting out there. I did a double take and I was like oh my goodness, you're not supposed to be here." The dog, now nicknamed "Mo" (short for Como), was spotted wandering into the pool area on Thursday. Mo seemed calm, friendly and oddly comfortable, despite not belonging to anyone at the facility. "Mo is short for Como, short for Como Regional Park Pool. His full name is Como Pool," said Chaput. Staff quickly checked for a microchip and put alerts to nearby shelters and posted on social media, but so far, no one has come forward to claim Mo. That's when swimming and life guard coach David Albornoz stepped in – or rather, Mo stepped into his heart. "We checked for a tag, and for chips. None," said Albornoz. "We made sure he was safe for the night. We reached out to animal control. We're hoping somebody is out there missing this cutie." Mo immediately took to Albornoz' own rescue Pomeranian named Kiki, and the two dogs were inseparable. Albeit, because Mo is not neutered. Sausage sold at Walmart and elsewhere recalled after white plastic found inside
Plastic shouldn't be among the ingredient amalgamation that creates any sausage, which is why Kayem Foods announced Thursday it is recalling about 24,173 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage. The Chelsea, Massachusetts, company recalled al fresco Chicken Sausage Sweet Apple with Vermont made syrup flavor in 11-ounce vacuum-packed packs, lot No. 179, to be used or frozen by Oct. 1, 2025. Establishment number 'P-7839' is inside the USDA inspection mark. 'The problem was discovered after the firm notified (USDA-Food Safety Inspection Service) that it received three consumer complaints reporting white pieces of plastic in the chicken sausage products,' the USDA-posted recall notice said.
