Warisan to go solo in polls

The Star22-05-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan has confirmed that it will contest the coming 17th Sabah state election on its own without alliances or deals with other parties.
Warisan secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua Jr, who disclosed this, said the party would contest using its own logo and had no intention of forming any political pact.
He said talk that Warisan was joining Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) or making 'backdoor deals' was completely false.
'These are lies being spread deliberately on social media to confuse and mislead the public,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Loretto said Warisan's only alliance is with the people of Sabah and that it will continue fighting for their rights and future.
'We will not be a part of the ongoing political games. Our focus is on issues that matter, such as the rising cost of living, water and power disruptions, jobs and fair control over our own resources,' he said.
Loretto said he was disappointed that the office of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri had been dragged into the political mud.
'The TYT is above politics and must be respected. Do not use the TYT for political gain,' he added.
He urged Sabahans to stay focused and not be misled by distractions.
'The coming election is about choosing leaders who truly care about Sabah, not those who engage in political games,' he said.
He said Warisan has consistently remained the sole opposition party in Sabah and believed that forming coalitions was not the solution.
'The way forward is a firm, people-based movement that puts Sabah first. We will continue to work with the people, not political elites,' he added.

Political stability crucial for Sabah to match Sarawak's development

KOTA KINABALU: Political stability and leadership continuity are vital for Sabah to achieve development levels comparable to Sarawak, said Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) deputy president Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He highlighted that frequent changes in government have complicated efforts to resolve basic issues and sustain development. Since 1963, Sabah has had 16 chief ministers, while Sarawak has had only six premiers and chief ministers. Masidi stressed that Sabah must adopt Sarawak's mindset, where political stability and development efforts are prioritised. 'Compared to Sarawak, Sabah's problem is the frequently changing governments. This itself shows how politically unstable things are,' he told reporters after officiating the 2025 Gagasan Rakyat Women's, Youth and Beliawanis Wings Conferences. A key factor in maintaining stability, according to Masidi, is having a local party fully backed by the people, similar to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). He urged Sabahans to think and decide freely, emphasising that egoistic attitudes in politics remain a major obstacle. 'If we continue to hold on to the attitude of 'I must win, others must lose', the people of Sabah will never be united,' he warned. Masidi cautioned that Sabah's abundant resources would remain underutilised without unity and hard work from leaders and citizens. 'We need to consider the greater interest, to develop the state together,' he added. - Bernama

Children of late Umno leader join Sabah STAR

Jin receives Shabudin's membership form. KOTA KINABALU (July 26): Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Sabah STAR) Beaufort is experiencing a notable political shift with a surge in new memberships, including several prominent local figures, as momentum builds ahead of the next Sabah state election. Beaufort parliamentary coordinator Jin Tze Vun revealed that among the latest to join the party are Shabudin Mohd Dun and his sister Noraina — the children of the late Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun Bin Banir, a respected former Umno leader in the area. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Jin said their decision was not political opportunism but a reflection of their alignment with Sabah STAR's unwavering stance on defending Sabah's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'The entry of these prominent individuals highlights the growing awareness among Sabahans of the importance of MA63 and the 'Sabah for Sabahans' movement. People are increasingly disillusioned with prolonged marginalisation by the federal government and are turning to parties that genuinely represent their aspirations,' he said. He added that Sabah STAR's consistent push for equal partnership with Putrajaya and greater state autonomy has garnered growing grassroots support across constituencies. 'The decision by the late Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun's family to join Sabah STAR is symbolic of a new chapter for Beaufort. Their support, particularly under the leadership of our president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, reinforces public trust in our commitment to Sabah's future,' said Jin. He also thanked the party's vice president, Datuk Kenny Chua, for his continuous support and guidance. With the latest developments, the division is intensifying efforts to strengthen its party machinery, engage more communities, and prepare for the upcoming elections. 'We are united in our mission to serve the people and deliver the change Sabah truly deserves,' he added.

Political Stability Key In Developing Sabah On Par With Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU, July 26 (Bernama) -- Political stability and continuity of leadership are key to enable Sabah to achieve a level of development on par with Sarawak, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) deputy president Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said. He pointed out that the political instability plaguing the state, which has 16 chief ministers compared to six premiers and chief ministers in Sarawak since 1963, has complicated efforts to resolve basic issues and the continued development of the state. The Sabah Finance Minister said the state had to emulate the thinking and attitude of Sarawakians who prioritised political stability and continued development efforts to ensure the state could progress into the future. bootstrap slideshow "Compared to Sarawak, Sabah's problem is the frequently changing governments. He said an important factor in maintaining political stability was to have a local party fully supported by the people, like Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), adding that Sabahans should be allowed to think and decide freely. Egoistic attitudes in politics were still the main obstacle to political stability and cooperation between parties in Sabah, as every party wanted to win and not many wanted to really work hard, Masidi added. bootstrap slideshow "If we continue to hold on to the attitude of ' I must win, others must lose', the people of Sabah will never be united ever. We need to consider the greater interest, to develop the state together,' he stressed. He also cautioned that the wealth of resources owned by Sabah would never be fully used without unity and the willingness of leaders and the people to work hard. -- BERNAMA
