Man gets street evacuated after pulling pin on WWII grenade from antique market
Bixton Close, in Northwick, Worcester, was sealed off with a 100m cordon on Sunday evening after the man showed the grenade to some friends.
He bought the RG-42 – a World War Two Soviet Union explosive device – from an antiques market over a year ago for £30.
But he didn't think it was a live device until he pulled the pin and it started making a noise.
'I noticed something was wrong as soon as I released the safety pin and the spoon sprung off it immediately,' the man said.
'It made some sort of reaction similar to when a firework fuse is ignited. It was a spilt second, I immediately threw this at the rear of the garden and evacuated the property and called the police.
'I was told to be minimum 100 metres away and try to alert neighbours. Police arrived within several minutes.
'Around five police cars turned up and about 30 minutes after the RLC bomb squad arrived to investigate.
'He firstly x-rayed the grenade to see if it still had its explosive content left.
'He's sure it was decommissioned but not certain, so he put it inside what looked to be a heavy-duty explosives box and told me he is going to dispose of it back at base.
'A few people were worried in the street. The area was locked for about three to four hours.' More Trending
He said he 'never intended to cause harm or distress' and thought the item was deactivated.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: 'Officers were called to Bixton Close in Worcester at around 7pm Sunday, June 1 following the discovery of a suspected hand grenade in a garden.
'As a precaution, a 100m cordon has been put in place and the area has been evacuated while we wait for experts from Explosive Ordnance Disposal to attend the scene.
'The EOD team x-rayed the grenade and found it was empty so there was no need for a controlled explosion.'

A man has been arrested after a cyclist died in a collision in Worcester in the early hours of Sunday morning. West Mercia Police received a report around 5am that a white and blue Dacia travelling towards Droitwich on the A38 had collided with a cyclist nearby the Copcut Elm Pub. Bomb squad swarm area near White House after 'suspicious package' found
U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers apprehend an individual who climbed a fence on the southeast side of the U.S. Treasury Building this afternoon, the Secret Service has confirmed A number of bomb squad vehicles rushed to an area near the White House today following reports of a 'suspicious package' nearby. Photographs from the scene shared to social media show the area cordoned off by officers and and restricted pedestrian and vehicle traffic as officials from the Metropolitan Police Department's Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit on Sunday evening. The Secret Service confirmed that the package was located just outside a security perimeter near the executive mansion. After officials investigated the incident, the area was cleared and roads were reopened. Washington DC police have yet to comment on the incident so it remains unclear what the package was and if it was dangerous. A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson said: "At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers immediately apprehend an individual who climbed a fence on the southeast side of the U.S. Treasury Building. "During the incident, the individual also dropped a bag on the sidewalk adjacent to the fence line. Out of an abundance of caution, the item was treated as suspicious. The Metropolitan Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team responded and subsequently cleared the item, declaring the scene and complex safe. "The individual was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. All area closures have since been lifted. No Secret Service protectees were present at the White House complex at the time of the incident. "The subject will be facing criminal charges to include unlawful entry and fugitive from justice due to an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction." A man has been arrested after a cyclist died in a collision on the A38 in the early hours of Sunday Mercia Police say they received a report at around 05:00 BST that a white and blue Dacia Duster travelling towards Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire had collided with a cyclist near the Copcut Elm cyclist, a man in his 30s, died at the driver of the Dacia, a 51-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and remains in police custody.
