This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Linda Zierolf, 80, who lives near Dayton, Ohio. She has worked at the same company since she was 18 and has no plans to retire. Zierolf, who is financially comfortable, said her company, while very different from a staffing and technology perspective, still has the same values and friendly people it had in the 1960s. Her words have been edited for length and clarity.
My company is celebrating its 70th year this year, and I have been here for 56 of them.
I'm still here because I really like the work and enjoy being busy. I'm not someone who can just sit around. Most of my friends are retired, but they say they wish they had worked longer.
When I graduated from high school, I had barely stepped off the stage when my dad asked when I was going to get a job.

I went to an employment agency, and the first place they sent me was an industrial wholesale company called Main Line Supply. I think I only got the job because I went to a Catholic all-girls high school, and the gentleman who interviewed me was Catholic.
I still have my receipt from the employment agency I paid to get the job. Every year that I've been here, I take it to my boss and say, "Are you going to reimburse me this year?"
When I started, I made $62 a week before taxes. My father worked for General Motors, and he thought I needed to work there instead. He got me an interview, and they offered me a job as a secretary for the engineering department. I would have gone from $62 to $300 a week, plus all the GM benefits. I turned them down. My father, until his dying day at 97, never understood why.
Even at that young age, I knew I wouldn't like working for a big company. I would rather work for a smaller company where I figured what I did mattered and they knew who I was. My bosses came to my wedding with their families.
When I started work, I was the secretary, so I took shorthand, typed letters, filed, and answered questions. From the moment I walked in, I loved every aspect of it.
I worked here for five years, and then I left because I got married, and my husband was in the Army. We went to Germany for two years, and I had my children. When they were a little older, I came back.
My career grew as more women became our clients
When one of our largest customers got a woman buyer, my boss went to meet with her. He came back and said, "I don't think we're going to get along very well. Why don't you go up?" I was scared to death, but I drove up there, and she and I hit it off.
I've been in sales ever since, mostly because of the women coming into the workforce as buyers. I would walk into these factories because all the stuff that we sell is for factory workers, and the first couple of times, the mostly male staff would not be very friendly and would give me a terrible look. I started being able to talk to them and solve some of their problems, and then we were fine.
There are a lot more women than when I first started. We were all secretaries, and we really weren't out there. But it was wonderful to see the women at this company evolve.
I've only asked for a raise once, and it about killed me. My boss asked, "How much do you want?" I responded, and he said, "OK, done." I was flabbergasted.
Face-to-face meetings have become less necessary
The original people who started this company are all gone, but my boss is now the owner. They have treated me extremely well, even as they've grown. When I first got here, we had maybe 15 employees and one location. Now, we have three locations and almost 80 employees. My boss told me I could stay and do whatever I wanted for as long as I wanted. So, as long as I feel that I'm contributing, I will stay.
The biggest change is the computer. Before then, we made very few long-distance calls because we were charged for each call. Everything went through the mail, so it took a lot longer.
Now, I don't know how we would ever get along without it. It gives us so much more information. Before, we would have to go through all the files by hand. Now it's right at our fingertips. In some ways, I miss the old way of doing things.
The other thing that's changed for me is that with email, people don't want to see you as much. All they want is for you to reply with an email. We were used to always going out and having face-to-face meetings.
One time, one of my customers got married and was expecting a baby. I got a phone call and she said, "Can you come over to the hospital?" I hopped in my car and went over there, and I was with her husband, her mother, and her while she was in labor.
When my husband and I went on a vacation, if I went near any of my customers, I would go to their plant and see where my products were in use. I would also see if they're buying things from other people that they could have bought from us. I still take trips to visit customers.
I've been all over the place. Every time we went to a meeting, we probably met two or three new customers we never would have met otherwise. I've taken things to customers on weekends or after work. If a customer needs something and they're going to have a shutdown, we fly it in.
One change I don't like is that a lot of the people I called on used to work in factories and got the chance to come into purchasing, and knew what they were buying. I don't see that so much anymore. When someone calls me up, they just give me an item's number. They probably have no idea what that item is, where it goes, how it's used, etc. People just want to send in an order, and that's it.
I've also noticed that some people who don't have a college education don't often get the chance. A couple of the buyers that I worked with came right out of the factory, and they were good because they knew what they were buying.
I'm 80, but have no plans to retire
During the pandemic, they didn't want me in here at all, and I just kept coming in, and they kept sending me home. We were considered an essential company, so we never closed. I asked my boss if I could stay full-time, and he said fine, but I said I'd like to work a bit from home. I come into the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the rest of the time, I work from home.
Work keeps my mind going and gives me a purpose. I also would never want to disappoint the friends I've made here.
I've walked four half-marathons, and I'm going to do another 10k this fall. I have six grandchildren who keep me busy. I crochet a lot and make baby hats and blankets for a charity helping expectant mothers. I also garden a lot and go out with my friends to dinner or the movies. I do have a husband and a home to take care of.
Putting it all together, I don't sit down very much.

President Trump just unveiled his latest round of tariff ultimatum, setting a 30% duty on things made in Mexico and the European Union. He sees to be going with the "never let 'em know your next move" method of haphazard negotiation. The President announced the changes in two letters posted on social media over the weekend. He informed some very important trade partners that the new rates would kick in on August 1 if they could not negotiate better terms. His past few weeks have been split between this confusing (and expensive) shuffling of tariffs and dodging questions about Jeffrey Epstein. These latest levels are tweaked from the tariff levels he proposed in April. From Automotive News: The EU had been hoping to conclude a tentative deal with the U.S. to stave off higher tariffs, but Trump's letter punctured the recent optimism in Brussels over the prospects for an 11th-hour agreement between the major economies. Trump did, however, leave an opening for additional adjustments. "If you wish to open your heretofore closed Trading Market to the United States, and eliminate your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policy and Trade Barriers, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter," Trump wrote. The tariff rates would apply widely, though separate from the president's sectoral tariffs on products such as automobiles and steel. If implemented, it could place the EU at a competitive disadvantage on American exports to the neighboring U.K., which left the bloc in 2020 and was the first country to come to a top-line trade pact with Trump. Germany's VDA auto association tells AutoNews that there is still no solution to easing the current 27.5% duty on cars imported from the EU to the U.S. At the same time, European automakers are still holding out hope (such a silly move) that the two entities can reach some sort of agreement to lower auto import tariffs, potentially including a so-called "netting mechanism" to offset imports with exports. Something like this could be based on the value of exports out of the U.S. market, rather than the number of exported vehicles. In Mexico, Trump wants President Claudia Sheinbaum to continue supporting the securing of the border between the two North American countries. Trump added that if Mexico "is successful in challenging the cartels and stopping the flow of Fentanyl," the U.S. would consider adjusting the levies. "These tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your country," he added. The letter is silent on whether the U.S. will preserve a carve-out for goods traded under the USMCA trade deal, which have been exempt from the current 25 percent rate. The administration has previously said it will keep the exemption for Canada. Other countries Trump has pointed to for tariff hikes in recent days include South Korea, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia, as well as Algeria, Libya, Iraq, and Sri Lanka. What is bro doing? 2nd Gear: Musk Doesn't Want Tesla, xAI To Merge Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he does not support a merger between the automaker and his artificial intelligence start-up, xAI, which owns the Grok chatbot that has been having some major issues with racism, sexism, homophobia, and antisemitism lately. This news comes after Musk announced that Grok was on its way to being implemented in Tesla vehicles, something I've got no doubt would go totally smoothly. From Reuters: In response to a user post on X that asked Tesla investors if they supported a merger between the two companies, Musk replied "No." On Sunday, Musk had said he would ask Tesla shareholders to vote whether Tesla can invest in xAI, after earlier saying "it would be great" if Tesla could do so. [...] xAI acquired X, formerly called Twitter and also owned by Musk, in a $33 billion deal in March this year, valuing the combined group at $80 billion at the time. Sources told Reuters in June that xAI had been in talks to raise money at a valuation of more than $120 billion, while a valuation of as high as $200 billion was also discussed. The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Musk's SpaceX had committed $2 billion to xAI as part of a $5 billion equity round. The way Elon's companies invest in each other sort of makes me feel like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic. It's quite the masterful gambit by Musk. 3rd Gear: GM Idles Mexican Plant General Motors says it is idling production at a pickup truck plant in Silao, Mexico — where it builds the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra — for several weeks. The plant was down for the first two weeks of July, and it's scheduled to be idled again the weeks of August 4 and August 11. From Automotive News: "Scheduled down weeks at GM Silao are part of a standard operating process focused on optimizing production at our manufacturing complex," GM said in response to a Reuters inquiry. The Silverado and mechanically similar Sierra are by far GM's top sellers in the U.S., and major profit generators. GM also builds the Silverado and Sierra at factories in Fort Wayne, Ind., Flint, Mich. and Ontario, Canada. It is common for automakers to halt factory work to perform maintenance or adjust assembly lines for model changes. Most of GM's U.S. factories were not operating last week as part of a usual down week for the July 4 holiday. Trucks like the Sierra and Silverado — among some of the best-selling vehicles in America — are absolutely crucial for GM. The automaker sold 278,599 Silverados and 166,409 Sierras in the first half of 2025. Those numbers represent a 2% and 12% respective increase in sales over the same period in 2024. Any downtime seems sure to hurt sales efforts. 4th Gear: Thousnds Of Range Rover Evoques Recalled For Airbag Issue Jaguar Land Rover -- which recently resumed shipping vehicles to the U.S. -- is recalling U.S.-market Range Rover Evoques built between 2021 and 2025 because the front passenger airbag could tear during deployment. Obviously, that's not ideal, and it could lead to a further risk of injury in a crash if the hot gases inside the bag escape. From AutoEvolution: [T]he airbag module in question is produced by the Hungarian arm of Joyson Safety Systems. [...] Jaguar Land Rover started looking into this matter in May 2023, following a number of reports from the manufacturer of the fascia assembly over abnormal front passenger airbag deployments. After many analyses and much investigation, the British automaker concluded in June 2025 that the airbag material showed variability in the folds of suspect airbags. The Recall Determination Committee ultimately decided on a safety recall on June 30, 2025. Thankfully for both customers and JLR's legal team, Jaguar Land Rover is not aware of any reported injuries resulting from this concern. The recall documentation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does not explicitly state how the supplier corrected this condition in airbag production or if the remedy modules come from a different supplier. Owners and lessees will have the possibly faulty airbag modules replaced at Land Rover dealerships, who will be informed no later than July 21. Owners can expect to be notified by mail on or before August 25. In total, 20,999 Evoques are being recalled, according to Reuters. Reverse: Built Ford Tough We really don't talk enough about how wild it is that ol' Gerry Ford was able to become the freaking President without receiving a single vote. General Motors (GM) Q2 Earnings Report Preview: What To Look For

Automotive manufacturer General Motors (NYSE:GM) will be announcing earnings results this Tuesday before the bell. Here's what investors should know. General Motors beat analysts' revenue expectations by 2.7% last quarter, reporting revenues of $44.02 billion, up 2.3% year on year. It was a mixed quarter for the company, with a narrow beat of analysts' adjusted operating income estimates but a significant miss of analysts' EBITDA estimates. This quarter, analysts are expecting General Motors's revenue to decline 2.7% year on year to $46.66 billion, a reversal from the 7.2% increase it recorded in the same quarter last year. Adjusted earnings are expected to come in at $2.47 per share. The majority of analysts covering the company have reconfirmed their estimates over the last 30 days, suggesting they anticipate the business to stay the course heading into earnings. General Motors has only missed Wall Street's revenue estimates once over the last two years, exceeding top-line expectations by 4% on average. Looking at General Motors's peers in the industrials segment, some have already reported their Q2 results, giving us a hint as to what we can expect. Winnebago's revenues decreased 1.4% year on year, missing analysts' expectations by 0.8%, and Lindsay reported revenues up 21.7%, topping estimates by 4.6%. How Huawei ascended from telecoms to China's 'jack of all trades' AI leader

Despite being beaten down by years of U.S. trade restrictions, China's telecom giant Huawei has quietly emerged as one of the country's fiercest competitors across the entire AI landscape. Not only does the Shenzhen-based firm appear to represent Beijing's answer to American AI chip darling Nvidia, but it has also been an early adopter of monetizing artificial intelligence models in industrial applications. "Huawei has been forced to shift and expand its core business focus over the past decade… due to a variety of external pressures on the company," said Paul Triolo, partner and senior vice president for China at advisory firm DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group. This expansion has seen the company get involved in everything from smart cars and operating systems to the technologies needed for the AI boom, such as advanced semiconductors, data centers, chips and large language models. "No other technology company has been able to be competent in so many different sectors with high levels of complexity and barriers to entry," Triolo said. This year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has become increasingly vocal in calling Huawei "one of the most formidable technology companies in the world." He has also warned that Huawei will replace Nvidia in China if Washington continues to restrict U.S. chip firms' exports to the Asian country. Nvidia surpassed $4 trillion in market capitalization last week to become the world's most valuable company. Its cutting-edge processors and a related "CUDA" computing system remain the industry standard for training generative AI models and applications. But that moat may be narrowing, as Huawei proves that it not only does it all, it does it well. While challenging American AI stalwarts like Nvidia is a tall order, the company's history shows why it can't be counted out. Huawei, which now employs more than 208,000 people across over 170 markets, came from humble beginnings. Founded by ambitious entrepreneur Ren Zhengfei in 1987 out of an apartment in Shenzhen, the firm started as a small telephone switch distributor. As it grew into a telecoms player, it gained traction by targeting less developed markets such as Africa, the Middle East, Russia and South America, before eventually expanding to places like Europe. By 2019, Huawei would be well-positioned to capitalize on the global 5G rollout, becoming a leader in the market. Around this time, it had also blossomed into one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers and was even designing smartphone chips through its chip design subsidiary, HiSilicon. But Huawei's success also attracted increasing scrutiny from governments outside China, particularly the U.S., which has frequently accused Huawei's technology of posing a national security threat. The Chinese company has refuted such risks. Huawei's business suffered a major setback in 2019 when it was placed on a U.S. trade blacklist, preventing American companies from doing business with it. As the impact of the sanctions kicked in, Huawei's consumer business – once the company's largest by revenue – halved to about $34 billion in 2021 from the year before. The company still managed a breakthrough on AI chips, and pressed ahead despite additional U.S. restrictions in 2020 that cut the company off from chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. A year earlier, Huawei officially launched its Ascend 910 AI processing chip as part of a strategy to build a "full-stack, all-scenario AI portfolio" and to become a provider of AI computing power. But the U.S. targeting of Huawei also had the effect of turning the company into a martyr-like figure in China, building upon attention it received in 2018 when Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's CFO and daughter of Ren, was arrested in Canada for alleged violations of Iran sanctions. As the U.S.-China tech war continued to expand and broad advanced chip restrictions were placed on China, Huawei was an obvious choice to become a national champion in the race, with more impetus and state backing for its AI plans. "The export controls have ironically pushed Huawei into the arms of the Chinese government in a way that CEO Ren Zhengfei always resisted," Triolo said. In this way, the restrictions also became "the steroids" for Huawei's AI hardware and software stack. After another year of declining sales in the consumer segment, the unit started to turn around in 2023 with the release of a smartphone that analysts said contained an advanced chip made in China. The 5G chip came as a shock to many in the U.S., who didn't expect Huawei to reach that level of advancement so quickly without TSMC. Instead, Huawei was reportedly working with Chinese chipmaker SMIC, a company that has also been blacklisted by the U.S. While semiconductor analysts said the scale that Huawei and SMIC could produce these chips was severely limited, Huawei nonetheless had proved it was back in the advanced chip game. It was also around this time that reports began surfacing about Huawei's new AI processor chip, the Ascend 910B, with the company looking to seize upon gaps left by export controls on Nvidia's most advanced chips. Mass production of the next-generation 910C is reportedly already on the way. To fill the void left by Nvidia, Huawei "has been making big strides in replicating the performance of high-end GPUs using combinations of lower chips," said Jeffrey Towson, managing partner at TechMoat Consulting. In April, Huawei unveiled its "AI CloudMatrix 384", a system that links 384 Ascend 910C chips in a cluster within data centers. Analysts have said CloudMatrix is able to outperform Nvidia's system, the GB200 NVL72, on some metrics. Huawei isn't just catching up, "it's redefining how AI infrastructure works," Forrester analysts said in a report last month about CloudMatrix. Meanwhile, Huawei has also developed its own "CANN" software system that acts as an alternative to Nvidia's CUDA. "Winning the AI race isn't just about faster chips. It also includes delivering the tools developers need to build and deploy large-scale models," Forrester's report said, though authors noted that Huawei's products are still not integrated enough with other commonly used tools for developers to switch over quickly from Nvidia. While Huawei's goal to surpass Nvidia is seen as a key development in China and the U.S.'s race for AI, it's important to note that chips represent just one building block of Huawei's broader AI plans. Huawei now has its hands throughout the artificial intelligence value chain, from chips to computing, to AI models and AI applications. These different AI business avenues also leverage other areas of the company's vast technology empire. In fact, the company's "ICT Infrastructure" business — which includes 5.5G cellular network deployment and AI systems for industrial use — became the company's largest revenue driver at 362 billion yuan in 2023. The company has been deploying its Ascend AI chips and AI CloudMatrix 384 at its growing portfolio of AI data centers, which are operated by its cloud computing unit, Huawei Cloud, established in 2017 to compete with the likes of Amazon Web Services and Oracle. These data centers, in turn, have provided the training capabilities and computing power used by Huawei's suite of AI models under its Pangu series. Unlike other general-purpose AI models like OpenAI's GPT-4 or Google's Gemini Ultra 1.0, Huawei's Pangu model is designed to support more industry-specific applications across the medical, finance, government, industrial and automotive sectors. Pangu has already been applied in more than 20 industries over the last year, the company said last month. Rolling out such AI applications often involves having Huawei tech staff working for months at the project site, even if it's in a remote coal mine, Jack Chen, vice president of the marketing department for Huawei's oil, gas and mining business unit, which provides digital and intelligent solutions to transform these industries, told CNBC. That research enabled the company in May to deploy more 100 electric-powered trucks that can autonomously transport dirt or coal using the telecom company's 5G network, AI and cloud computing services. And it's not limited to China. The technology can "be replicated on a large scale in Central Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific," Chen said. Huawei has also open-sourced the Pangu models, in a move it said would help it expand overseas and further its "Ascend ecosystem strategy," which refers to its AI products built around its Ascend chips. Speaking to CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Thursday, Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy said he expected Huawei to push Ascend in countries part of China's Belt and Road Initiative — an investment and development project aimed at emerging markets. Over a period of five to 10 years, the company could begin to build serious market share in these countries, in the same way it once did with its telecommunications business, he added.
