Bodies of six Odia workers brought back to their villages
Berhampur: Heartbreaking scenes unfolded in four villages across Ganjam district as the bodies of six Odia workers, who lost their lives in a granite quarry accident in Andhra Pradesh, were brought to their respective villages for the last rites on Monday. The accident took place on Sunday when a portion of rock collapsed at a quarry near Ballikurava in Andhra Pradesh's Bapatla district, claiming the lives of six Odia migrant workers. The deceased included two workers each from Digapahandi and Dharakote blocks in Ganjam district, and two others from Mohana block in Gajapati district. Eight other workers, mostly Odias, sustained injuries in the incident. The Ganjam district administration facilitated the transportation of the bodies from Digapahandi to their home villages. Transport minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and fisheries and animal resources minister Gokulaananda Mallick visited the grieving families to offer their condolences. The victims were identified as Danda Badatya, 48, from Chasa Nimakhandi, Banamali Behera, 30, from Bangarda in Digapahandi block, Santosh Gouda, 36, from Bada Kashei, and Musa Jena, 43, from Bahadaguda in Dharakote block. Similarly, Bhagaban Behera, the father of Banamali Behera, was shocked by the news of his son's death. Banamali had gone to Andhra Pradesh two months ago to earn a livelihood, and the family had been planning his wedding this year. In Gajapati district's Mohana block, a sombre atmosphere prevailed as the bodies of Tukuna Dalia (37) and Bhaskar Bisoi (40) were brought back to their village. Both had left for Andhra Pradesh about a month ago in search of work. Rina Dalai, the wife of Tukuna, was inconsolable and fainted several times upon hearing the news of her husband's untimely death. She is now left to care for their two young children.

Nandakumar well repair plea before 250th hanging anniv
Kolkata: The site at Hastings, where Maharaja Nandakumar was hanged on Aug 5, 1775, lies in complete neglect, with a crumbling well lost to time, a disappearing boundary wall, homeless people usurping the place and civic apathy. Ahead of the 250th anniversary of the hanging, historians and civic groups urged authorities to act. "At the very least, this unmarked well deserves a plaque so that people remember that one of India's first fights against colonial injustice began here," said Shankar Nath, a medical practitioner-cum-historian. Nandakumar's execution, which was carried out at Hastings, then known as Cooly Bazar, near Kidderpore Bridge, earned the dubious distinction of being British India's first 'judicial murder'. He was reportedly hanged from a scaffolding erected over a well, dug at his request, close to the Adi Ganga, to enable his last rites. Although KMC has repeatedly announced plans to restore the site, little has materialised. This, when Victoria Memorial Hall recently placed Nandakumar's turban on display, a gesture of archival respect. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Residents pointed out the site had turned into a haven for the homeless and drunkards, with no marker or plaque to signify its significance. The East India Company appointed Nandakumar as the tax collector of Burdwan and Mughal emperor Shah Alam II bestowed on him the title, 'Maharaja'. His downfall began when he accused governor-general Warren Hastings of accepting bribe from Munni Begum, widow of Nawab Mir Jafar, to secure guardianship of minor Nawab Mubarak-ud-Daulah. Hastings overruled it but Nandakumar was accused of forgery by a private individual. The case was tried at the newly established Supreme Court in Kolkata, and a jury found Nandakumar guilty. He was sentenced to death.

Progressive farming at Salai Mendha gets PDKV vice-chancellor attention
1 2 Nagpur: Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), Akola, vice-chancellor Sharad Gadakh on Saturday visited Salai Mendha, a model village under the Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) programme in Hingna tehsil. The key objective was to interact with farmers, review students' field experiences and promote sustainable farming practices in rural settings. The VC praised efforts made in Salai Mendha over the past three years, which include the implementation of Azolla units, composting, mulberry plantations, high-density cropping, and drip irrigation techniques. "The significance of a village lies not in its size but in the extent of technology adoption," the VC said. He also stressed sustainable agriculture, organic practices, agri-innovation and economic empowerment of farmers. "Today's farmer is not just a producer, but a future agri-entrepreneur," he said. At the farm of Sandeep Masram, Gadakh observed the cultivation of mulberry, while at Gajanan Bharde's farm, he witnessed intercropping, vegetable farming, and drumstick cultivation, all examples of maximising production from limited land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again!
