A 19-year-old man has been charged with arson for allegedly sparking the massive wildfire in the New Jersey Pine Barrens that has torched 15,000 acres, prosecutors said.
Joseph Kling, of Ocean Township, allegedly started a bonfire in the vast Forked River Mountains Wilderness Area with wooden pallets that exploded out of control when he did not properly put it out, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Kling was taken into custody at Ocean Township police headquarters and brought to the Ocean County Jail.
He appeared for an initial hearing Thursday afternoon via video conference, looking disheveled and wearing a green prison jumpsuit.
The judge said the state filed a motion to keep him locked up ahead of his trial, and that the detention hearing has been scheduled for April 29, when a superior court judge will determine if he should be released or remain behind bars.
Neither the Ocean County prosecutor nor Kling's public defender, Giana Testa, had any questions for the judge, but Kling asked if the date of his next hearing fell on a Tuesday and what time it would be held.
The judge told him such proceedings usually kick off at 9 a.m., and Kling said 'thank you, have a good day,' before walking off camera.

A column of smoke was first spotted from the Cedar Bridge Fire Tower in Barnegat Township around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.
The fire quickly spread out of control, forcing the evacuation of 5,000 residents of Ocean and Lacey townships.
As of Thursday morning, the fire had scorched roughly 15,000 acres (23 square miles, or slightly larger than Manhattan Island) and destroyed at least one commercial building.
The wildfire is currently 50% contained with 12 structures threatened, according to the latest update from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
No injuries have been reported, and all evacuation orders have been lifted.
The massive blaze, one of the largest wildfires in the Garden State in decades, prompted an air quality advisory in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester and Rockland counties through Thursday.
Officials estimate the fire might not be completely extinguished until at least Saturday.

Lauren Boebert's son charged with child abuse in incident she described as a ‘miscommunication'

Rep. Lauren Boebert's son has been charged with child abuse following an incident involving her grandson that she described as a 'miscommunication.' Tyler Boebert, 20, the eldest son of the MAGA congresswoman, was cited for criminal negligence where no death or injury occurred, which is a misdemeanor, for the July 11 incident, according to Windsor Police Department records obtained by Denver Westword. Authorities have not yet shared details about the incident, which the 38-year-old congresswoman brushed off as 'a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of the house.' In a statement, the congresswoman described her son's legal trouble as a 'one-time incident,' noting there was 'no injury or physical abuse involved.' Child Protective Services met with the family, the congresswoman added. Despite this, it's not the first run-in with the law for the congresswoman's 20-year-old son, whose girlfriend became pregnant with his child when he was just 17. In September of 2022, Tyler Boebert flipped his father's SUV into a creek, leaving the person in his passenger seat with multiple concussions and a severely lacerated hand. He was ticketed for careless driving. The case was eventually dropped down to a 'defective vehicle for headlights' ticket under a plea deal. Then, in January 2024, he called the police to report that his father, Jayson, was assaulting him, leading to his arrest. During the incident, the father 'pushed Tyler to the ground and pushed his thumb into his mouth,' according to the arrest affidavit. A month later, Tyler was slapped with more than a dozen felony charges for a series of thefts from vehicles – and for using stolen credit cards at local gas stations. Tyler Boebert pleaded guilty last October to a single charge of attempting to commit identity theft and was given a two-year deferred judgment, allowing his felony to be cleared from his record after completing his 24-month probation term. He was required to complete 80 hours of community service and was banned from using controlled substances. It was not immediately clear whether the most recent citation would be a breach of his probation. He is due in Weld County Court on September 8. Lauren Boebert did not immediately return The Independent's request for comment.

2 people found dead along Arkansas hiking trail in a suspected homicide, officials say

Two people were found dead along a walking trail in a state park in Arkansas, authorities said Sunday. A 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were found dead at Devil's Den State Park in Washington County, according to the Arkansas State Police. Its criminal investigation unit is handling what it calls a "suspected homicide." The suspect is a white male wearing dark shorts, a dark tank top and weight-lifting type gloves. He was seen driving toward a park exit in a black, four-door sedan whose license plate may have been covered by electrical or duct tape. The vehicle may have been traveling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park, police said. When CBS affiliate KTHV asked why it took about six hours between officials receiving reports of the deaths and sending out a public statement, an Arkansas State Police spokesperson said the area where the suspected homicide occurred is remote. "It took time for our Special Agents to arrive on scene, locate witnesses, conduct interviews and collaborate information so we released the appropriate information," the spokesperson told KTHV. The victims' bodies were being taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, where the manner and cause of death will be determined. FBI Little Rock is communicating with Arkansas State Police and ready to assist with the investigation, FBI Little Rock Office Public Affairs Officer Jessica Franklin told CBS affiliate KTHV. "We are praying for the family and friends of the victims, and know that law enforcement will not rest until the perpetrator is brought to justice," Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.
