VP Sara Duterte gets impeached by House of Representatives
A total of 153 congressmen signed the impeachment complaint against Duterte on the last day of the House's session.
Only a third of the House, or 101 signatures, is required for the complaint to be endorsed to the Senate, where the vice president will face trial.
Three impeachment complaints have been filed against Duterte, citing allegations of misuse of public funds, culpable violation of the Constitution, and betrayal of public trust.

The first complaint, led by Akbayan Party-List Representative Perci Cendaña, alleged that Duterte failed to account for P125 million in confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in 2022.
The second complaint was lodged by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), which highlights the alleged misuse of these confidential funds.
Meanwhile, the third complaint, which was submitted by a coalition comprising Catholic priests, civil society leaders, and lawyers, broadens the scope of the allegations to include plunder, malversation, bribery, and graft and corruption.
According to House Secretary General Reginald Velasco, his office has not yet received the fourth complaint, which would build on the three prior ones.
He explained that if the complaint is filed by more than a third of the House members, it would be presented on the House floor and, if approved, immediately transmitted to the Senate. 'If it proceeds, VP Duterte will be impeached and will face a Senate trial,' Velasco said.

Lawmakers from the Liberal Party and the ML party-list have filed a bill seeking to require the annual public disclosure of the Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) of the President, Vice President, and other high-ranking government officials. House Bill No. 2897, also known as the proposed 'People's Freedom of Information Act of 2025,' was filed Monday at the House of Representatives. Under the measure, SALNs of Cabinet members, senators, House lawmakers, justices of the Supreme Court, commissioners of constitutional bodies, and generals of the Armed Forces of the Philippines must be published yearly on the official websites of their respective offices. The bill also mandates all branches of government to publish and update monthly a register of 'public interest transactions' on their websites. These include itemized collections and disbursements, summaries of income and expenditures, procurement plans and contracts, agreements involving public-private partnerships, and public funding extended to private entities. All Filipino citizens would be granted the right to request and access any record held by government agencies. The proposed law obligates public officials and agencies to disclose information on official acts, transactions, decisions, and research data used in policy-making. House files motion to reverse SC ruling on Sara Duterte impeachment
The House of Representatives has formally asked the Supreme Court (SC) to reconsider its decision declaring the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional. House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez confirmed that the motion for reconsideration was filed through the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), emphasizing that the move was not meant to challenge the Court's authority but to uphold constitutional processes. 'With utmost respect for the Constitution, in defense of institutional balance, and in the name of the Filipino people whom we are sworn to represent, the House of Representatives today filed a Motion for Reconsideration before the Supreme Court of the Philippines,' Romualdez said in a video message. 'This is not an act of defiance or disrespect. It is an exercise in constitutional stewardship—an affirmation that every branch must act with fidelity to the Charter that gives us all our power,' he added. Romualdez maintained that the Constitution grants the House the exclusive power to initiate all impeachment proceedings, a power he said the Supreme Court disregarded in its ruling on G.R. No. 278353. 'Let us be clear: The Constitution says: 'The House of Representatives shall have the exclusive power to initiate all cases of impeachment.' That power is not shared. Not subject to pre-approval. And not conditional,' he said. He cited the SC's own precedent in Francisco v. House of Representatives, saying the decision affirmed that only one impeachment may be initiated against the same official within a year, and that initiation begins with either a one-third endorsement or referral to the House Committee on Justice. On July 25, Supreme Court spokesperson Camille Ting announced the High Court's decision voiding the articles of impeachment sent to the Senate, citing a violation of the 1987 Constitution's one-year bar rule. The articles stemmed from the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte, which was endorsed and signed by 215 House members on February 5, 2025. The complaint accused Duterte of misuse of confidential funds, threats against government officials, and possible constitutional violations. The complaint was immediately transmitted to the Senate, fulfilling the constitutional requirement that mandates a Senate trial once a complaint gains support from at least one-third of House members. Earlier, two petitions were filed before the Supreme Court seeking to stop the impeachment proceedings, including one from a group of Mindanao-based lawyers who argued that the House failed to act on earlier complaints within the required 10 session days. Egyptians vote in two-day Senate election with key list unopposed
Polling stations opened across Egypt on Monday for a two-day election for the country's Senate, a vote in which a major political coalition is running uncontested for the 100 seats allocated to party lists. President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi cast his ballot on Monday morning at the Martyr Moustafa Yosri Omira school in the Heliopolis district of Cairo. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly also voted in Sheikh Zayed City, west of the capital, and called on all voters to participate in what he described as a 'constitutional right and a national duty'. Madbouly said the state had taken all necessary measures to ensure the electoral process proceeds in a secure and orderly manner across the country's 8,825 polling stations. Voting for Egyptians inside the country continues until polls close on Tuesday, 5 August. Egyptians living abroad cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday at embassies and consulates. The election is for 200 of the Senate's 300 seats. A total of 424 candidates are competing for 100 seats allocated to individuals after four candidates withdrew their nominations. The other 100 elected seats are allocated to party lists. A single coalition, the 'National List for Egypt,' which is led by the pro-government Mostaqbal Watan (Nation's Future) party and includes 12 other parties, is running for the 100 list-based seats across the four designated constituencies. This list is considered to have won by default, provided it secures at least 5% of the total valid votes. The remaining 100 members of the chamber will be appointed by the president after the election. The Senate, formerly known as the Shura Council, was abolished under constitutional amendments in 2014 but reinstated following further amendments in 2019. The NEA said it had made preparations to facilitate voting, particularly for the elderly and people with disabilities. For the first time, instructions on the ballot paper will be written in sign language to assist hearing-impaired voters. The election is being held under the supervision of 9,500 members of judicial bodies. It is the first national election to take place after the end of a 10-year transitional period mandated by the 2014 constitution, which required full supervision of elections by members of the judiciary. That period ended in January 2024. The last major election in Egypt was the presidential vote in December 2023, which saw a turnout of 66.8%, with 44.7 million people casting ballots from a total of 67 million registered voters. Elections for the House of Representatives, the primary chamber of parliament, are expected to be held in November.
