'I was denied PIP because I can drive but won at tribunal after 15-month fight'

Yahoo4 hours ago

A person has shared how their wife was awarded Personal Independence Payment (PIP) following a 15-month 'fight'.
The cash was initially denied because she can drive and work, their spouse said.
But following a lengthy battle and tribunal, she has finally been awarded the financial support for her conditions including: ADHD, anxiety and mobility issues.
The story was shared on Reddit earlier this month and has since given hope to other users on the site who are going through issues with their benefit claim.

The woman's spouse wrote: "Just want to give a positive story. Today, after a 15-month fight, my wife won PIP at the tribunal.
"We had got some advice beforehand and a submission was given to the courts on Tuesday about the point we wanted to argue.
"Today, as we arrived, my wife received a few missed calls from a private number. She passed her phone to me to answer, and it was a lady from the court/ hearing advising us that we did not need to attend as the judge had ruled the appeal was won.
"I advised we were at the courts and she came out and spoke to us in person and advised the judge had ruled [that] the appeal had been won on both daily living and mobility.
"Originally DWP had awarded 0 points with the reasoning being as my wife is employed and can drive she must be able to do other tasks.
"We were advised at the courts that just because someone works does not mean they do not struggle to do so.
"Enhanced awarded on daily living and mobility. Conditions: ADHD, ASD 2 , anxiety and depression as well as issues with mobility.
"Now we wait for the letter to arrive with the full details."
In response, people were quick to congratulate the person on their win.
One person said: "So glad she got the result she deserved and thanks for posting."
A second added: "Firstly well done and secondly another example of why you should also go to tribunal and not give up."
In a reply to this comment, the original poster said: "Thank you. Not going to lie, it was such a relief it was won without having to sit through it and be questioned."
Another person wrote: "Congrats! Really happy for you and your wife!"
"I'm glad you finally got the outcome you were entitled to and your long battle has ended positively," one user said.
Another added: "I'm so pleased to read that people are fighting and winning for the help they are entitled to."
The government website states: "Personal Independence Payment (PIP) can help with extra living costs if you have both:
a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability
difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition
"You can get PIP even if you're working, have savings or are getting most other benefits."

Gun range could become skatepark or energy centre

A former rifle range and undercroft by Blackfriars Bridge could find a new use as a skatepark or energy centre. The site has been occupied since 2017 by Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd for the construction of the Thames Tideway tunnel. It will now return to either the City of London Corporation or Transport for London once it is determined which of the two bodies is the legal owner. Thames Water will manage the foreshore, which will include a café. The shooting range was shut down to allow for the construction of the tunnel and sits beneath the undercroft. A report by the corporation noted the undercroft was "historically associated with antisocial behaviour" and has been inaccessible, with hoardings around it for decades. Three proposals have been put forward for the redevelopment of the site: A dedicated space for skateboarding and wheeled sports An energy centre delivering low-carbon heat Commercial options, such as kiosks and food and drink outlets A corporation spokesperson said the site was still being used to store materials related to the Tideway Tunnel. A further report detailing costs for each of the reuse options is to be presented to the City of London Corporation committee in early 2026. Call for people to attend funeral of veteran, 102

An appeal has been made for people to attend the funeral of an Army veteran. William Darnell, who served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, died recently at the age of 102. Hull4Heroes, a charity founded by Paul Matson, a veteran himself, issued the appeal on social media. The post read: "William sadly has no surviving family, but his kind-hearted neighbours want to ensure he receives the farewell he truly deserves – let's make sure William is not alone on his final journey." The request for the charity to help came from Joanne Barlow, Mr Darnell's neighbour in the Holderness Road area of the city. She said: "We started to get to know William during the pandemic when we offered him help with shopping and things. "We took him out for his Covid injection and when he saw young kids on the street he would say that at that age he had to join the Army. "That's how we started to learn a bit about his past, although we still didn't know a lot about him." With no known surviving relatives, Ms Barlow said it was really important that he was given a proper send off. "I'm pleased to see that lots of people have responded to the call out from Hull4Heroes," she added. One of those to respond to the post was motorcyclist Paul Perry, 68, who lives in Wakefield. He said he would be attending the funeral along with members of the Veterans and Riders Support Group. "There'll be at least two of us there on Harley-Davidsons," he added. "We have a motto that no vet should leave this earth alone," he added. Mr Matson said: "All our veterans feel a sad loss when any veteran dies, just like they do in the police force, the fire service and such-like. It's good to pay our respects." Mr Darnell's funeral will be held on Monday at 11:00 BST in the small chapel at Chanterlands Avenue Crematorium in Hull. Emotional scenes as firefighters wave goodbye to old fire station

Serving and retired firefighters came together for a final parade at Stockport's old central fire station. Crews have now moved out of Stockport Community Fire Station ahead of work beginning on its 'state-of-the-art' replacement. The building on King Street West - between the town centre and Edgeley -is being demolished and rebuilt as part of a £6m project. Fire service bosses initially wanted to close the station, along with Whitehill station in Reddish, and merge them into one new station. READ MORE: Friends left stunned at Manchester Airport after landing £24,000 in terminal READ MORE: 'What happened to my wife was horrendous - the person responsible needs to come forward' But the large amount of redevelopment in the borough, particularly in and around the town centre, meant fire service chiefs were unable to find an affordable and suitable new site for the proposed new station. In November 2022 it was announced they would be retaining both and spending £6m on each, rebuilding them. The Stockport station is being done first. Crews working there have been relocated to Whitehill. The Manchester branch of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) posted on Facebook on Tuesday saying: "Today Stockport fire station closed its doors for the last time. "Crews will be working from Whitehill station whilst the old station at Stockport is demolished and the new one is built. Firefighters and retired Firefighters came together this morning for the last ever parade." The new building is expected to be ready for firefighters to move into next September. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) insists there will be no reduction in the number of fire engines or firefighters during the rebuild, and say they are 'absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response'. "Firefighters will continue their usual duties in and around Stockport's station area, including prevention activities, school visits and training," they added. Sarah Nattrass, Aassistant chief fire officer, said: 'Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service apologises for any delay residents have felt in us providing an update to our plans for Stockport fire station. "We understand that any visible change in our arrangements can bring uncertainties and worries. 'The state-of-the-art fire station is set to be delivered in Autumn next year and will provide the community with a modern, flexible, resilient fire and rescue service. 'A public consultation was first undertaken in Spring 2023 to make sure the plans developed were in tune with the needs of the local community. Further details and updates have been available on our website throughout the process. 'I also want to reassure residents that there will be no reduction in the amount of fire engines or firefighters in the area during the rebuild process, with crews moving to nearby Whitehill station. "This decision has been taken after extensive data analysis and we are absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response both within the immediate area around Stockport King Street West Fire Station and across the wider borough of Stockport. 'I am committed to providing our local community opportunities to hear directly from us as the construction of the new community fire station, which will bring lasting benefits to the borough, progresses.'
