Natalie Sawyer hits back at Arsenal criticism over Christian Norgaard transfer
Natalie Sawyer has hit back at criticism over Arsenal's push to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard.
Arsenal are in the market for two new central midfielders this summer as Jorginho has already joined Flamengo for the Club World Cup, while Thomas Partey's contract is due to expire on Monday and an agreement over a new deal has not been reached.
Martin Zubimendi is expected to join in a £55 million deal from Real Sociedad but Arsenal have also made a move this week to sign Norgaard from Brentford.
A £9m bid was submitted to Brentford this week and Arteta is understood to be personally pushing for the Denmark international due to his experience.
Arsenal, however, have been accused of lacking ambition in the transfer market but talkSPORT host Sawyer, who is a Brentford fan, is adamant that the 31-year-old can become a key figure under Arteta.

'There's been a lot of snobbery I've seen about him and whether or not he's really the type of player Arsenal should be looking at,' Sawyer told talkSPORT on Saturday.
'What I will say about Christian Norgaard, yes, I'm surprised, I didn't see that one coming, he's our club captain, I'm gutted that he might be leaving.
'What you're getting is a player who is a No.6 by trade, he starts the build-up play for example at Brentford, he's one of those who puts the tackles in, he'll do a bit of dirty work as well, he might do a tactical foul if need be, he's also a threat at set-pieces, I'm not saying he's prolific but he'll still score goals. 'He's a Steady Eddie – again, Steady Eddie doesn't sound, 'wow, that's amazing', but isn't that what you want from a defensive midfielder at the end of the day?
'He is such a professional, honestly, he is brilliant. He's one of those I can well imagine becoming a teacher's pet.
'He was Thomas Frank's teacher's pet, he could easily be Mikel Arteta's teacher's pet. Not playing as regularly but just because he'll want to learn, he'll want to work under a manager like Arteta, I'm sure.
'So in that sense, I wish people would stop looking at the fact he's from Brentford, and just look at the style of play he brings, the type of person he is, I think he could be a terrific addition. A squad, player, it's all about depth at the end of the day.'

Enzo Maresca labelled the decision to suspend Chelsea's Club World Cup last-16 tie with Benfica for two hours 'a joke' even as his side eventually ran out 4-1 winners. Benfica boss singles out 'very strong' Chelsea star after Club World Cup defeat
Benfica head coach Bruno Lage singled out Pedro Neto for special praise following the side's Club World Cup defeat to Chelsea, pointing to the winger's constant threat in 'one-on-one' duels. The Blues appeared to be cruising towards the quarter-finals as Reece James fired a superb free-kick beyond Anatoliy Trubin to break the deadlock in the 64th minute, before play was suspended due to nearby lightning. Andre Onana has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Manchester United at Old Trafford and it appears that Ruben Amorim has finally decided what to do with him ahead of next term Manchester United are reportedly willing to sanction a loan move for Andre Onana after stumbling into a real issue regarding his future. The Cameroonian international has endured a tricky couple of seasons since his arrival from Inter Milan. High-profile errors have blighted his performances and put his position as number one in jeopardy. United are open to letting him leave and would apparently prefer a permanent sale. But Onana's high wages have made an exit this summer tricky and Red Devils chiefs are now having to get creative to move him on. According to The Sun, United are open to letting Onana leave on loan. Monaco - who have recently signed ex-United midfielder Paul Pogba - have been linked with a move but have struggled to get a deal over the line. It is said that United are now awaiting approaches and would prefer to send the 29-year-old to Europe as opposed to a Premier League rival. Speaking earlier this month, Onana appeared to hint that he was also open to an exit. He said: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" While Onana's future remains up in the air, United have already launched their search for a new number one. Aston Villa 's Emi Martinez remains their number one target but a deal for the 2022 World Cup winner is expected to be expensive. Other options include Botafogo's John Victor, Porto star Diogo Costa and Cruz Azul number one Kevin Mier. Former United stopper Ben Foster believes that Martinez would be the outstanding candidate should Onana be moved on. He said: 'It's a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he [Onana] hasn't done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United number one. 'I think he's got ability, and like so many other Man United players, he'd go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that's probably going to be the case with him as well. If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like Emi Martinez, they've got to go for it. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'You've got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno's going to be staying now.
