The Disastrous, Society-Shifting Divorce of William K. and Alva Vanderbilt

In The Gilded Age season three, tensions are high between George and Bertha Russell. While in past seasons, George has been tolerant of Bertha's social schemings, he seems to have hit his limit after Bertha forced their daughter Gladys to marry the Duke of Buckingham for his title—despite her being in love with another man. The fate of their union will unfold over the next several episodes. However, if Fellowes follows the real-life story of William K. and Alva Vanderbilt—the historical inspiration for the fictional George and Bertha—there's unlikely to be a happy ending. Alva Vanderbilt married William 'Willie' K. Vanderbilt in 1875. They met months earlier at a party his father, William H. Vanderbilt, threw for one of his daughters in New York City. Alva's best friend, Consuelo Yznaga, introduced her to the wealthy scion. It was something of a lifeline for Alva: her family had lost their fortune, and she needed an advantageous marriage to provide economic stability. Willie, whom she found handsome and charming, fit the bill—both figuratively and literally. Yet Alva was a woman subject to her times: in the Gilded Age, women were viewed as inferior to men, relegated to the domestic sphere and mostly valued for their beauty. As their marriage progressed, Willie's eye began to wander. "Given the circumstances, she could not have been surprised when her husband began to spend more time at his club, the racetrack, and the gaming table than he did at home,' wrote Sylvia Hoffert in her book Alva Vanderbilt Belmont: Unlikely Champion of Women's Rights. 'Experience had shown her that, like many of his friends, he was a man easily flattered by women who wished to benefit from a relationship with him.' In other words, Willie began to have affairs. One with a woman in Paris, Nellie Neustretter, became particularly egregious. William regularly took her out in public to the theater, or drove with her through the streets of Paris. It was Alva's last straw: 'Alva was not prepared to play second fiddle to anyone, let alone her husband's mistresses,' Hoffert wrote. 'And she certainly was not willing to suffer public humiliation at his hands.' In December 1894, Alva filed for divorce. This was explosive news: divorce meant ostracization from upper class society, who prided themselves on a stable family life—or, perhaps more importantly, the appearance of a stable family life. Her lawyer even begged her to reconsider, as it would air the dirty laundry of the family: at the time, no-fault divorces did not exist… meaning you had to prove fault, which, in this case, was adultery. ('I think now we take divorce for granted, whereas back then it was almost like a death sentence. They were trapped,' The Gilded Age executive producer Sonja Warfield tells Vogue.) Still, she went forth.

Beyoncé's unreleased music was stolen. Now Atlanta PD has an arrest warrant in hand

Thinking of stealing from Team Beyoncé? Think twice, because Atlanta police have a suspect in their sights after jump drives containing unreleased music by the singer were stolen from her choreographer's van. Queen Bey just wrapped up her shows in the ATL, but a bad tone was set for the four-night stand on July 8 when a Jeep Wagoneer rented by Beyoncé's choreographer Christopher Grant was broken into. The vehicle was on the main level of a parking structure near the city's Krog Street Market. Read more: 'Reclaiming red, white and blue': What fans wore to Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' show in L.A. Grant and dancer Diandre Blue had stopped at a restaurant shortly after 8 p.m. to get something to eat. When they returned a little more than an hour later, they saw that the back window of the SUV had been smashed and their suitcases had been stolen, according to an Atlanta Police Department report. The two suitcases held two computers and five jump drives containing unreleased music by Beyoncé as well as footage, plans for the tour production and past and future set lists, the report said. Clothing, Apple AirPods Max headphones and designer sunglasses were also taken, the report said. "They have my computer, and it's really, really important information in there," Grant said in a 911 call released by Atlanta police, keeping his employer's name out of it. "I work with someone who is, like, of a high status, and I really need my computer." He told police that the "Find My" feature was tracking his Mac devices. An officer was able to lift "two very light" fingerprints from the black Wagoneer, and police responded to the area where the devices were pinging. A suspicious vehicle being driven by a man was identified. Read more: He dazzled them with celebrity endorsements. Then came the lawsuits, bankruptcy and voodoo Police said Monday in a release that they had secured an arrest warrant for a male suspect. "At this time, the suspect remains outstanding, and their identity is not yet available for release," they said. Bey's tour stop wrapped with a small catastrophe as well: An escalator at the city's Vine City MARTA station reportedly sped up, then stopped, causing a small stampede after someone screamed. Medics took people out of the station on stretchers and in wheelchairs, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. "the escalator BROKE. someone screamed, people started running and at some point (maybe because the escalator broke and it was WAY too many people) people got injured," user @carlyraesasuke wrote Tuesday morning on X. "saw some poor lady on one of the benches with her leg bleeding and a handful of others on the floor. madness." Next, Beyoncé heads to Las Vegas for the final shows of the Cowboy Carter Tour on July 25-26. Get notified when the biggest stories in Hollywood, culture and entertainment go live. Sign up for L.A. Ridiculously Fun Corgi Puppies' ‘Obstacle Course' Is the Best Thing We've Seen All Day

Ridiculously Fun Corgi Puppies' 'Obstacle Course' Is the Best Thing We've Seen All Day originally appeared on PetHelpful. Some things are just impossibly cute, like corgi puppies - oh, and corgi puppy obstacle courses! Just check out this video to see what we're talking about. Not only is this total cuteness overload, but it is also, unsurprisingly, the best thing we've seen all day! What happens when four adorable, hungry corgi puppies have to traverse a fun little obstacle course to get to their food? Fun, laughs, and outrageous adorableness. That's what! As this video shows, the first part of this obstacle course consists of a barrier, some spiky, plastic padding that these little dogs have to jump over, a towel, a mini ball pit, and finally a tray of water. That last obstacle proves to be the biggest one for these little pups because none of them likes getting wet. The first pup makes it through the entire course of these. Their siblings, however, all get tripped up when it comes to crossing the water tray. At first, one of them sticks their paw in, but doesn't like the wet feeling, so they back away. But then they very quickly figure out that the only way is forward, and brave a few tentative steps through the water to get to their next one does the same, crossing the water very, very carefully. That leaves the last corgi pup, who looks more than a little bit frazzled as they realize that they must cross the water in order to get to their food. They bark in defiance, almost as if to say, 'No, I will not cross this moisture death pit!' However, they soon realize that they are protesting in vain, and realize that they must cross the water if they want to eat. Quite comically, they end up jumping right into the tray and making a big splash! Afterwards, they are finally able to join the canine siblings in enjoying some nice, tasty kibble! As this other video shows, these corgi pups are becoming well-versed in obstacle courses and challenging enrichment toys. This one is a moving surface that challenges them to learn how to make decisions in a calm, rational manner while they are under stress, according to the video's comments section. The comment added that playing on this moving surface will also help them develop body awareness and startle and recovery responses, which will go a long way towards helping them build confidence. And hey, who doesn't love a confident corgi? Looking for more PetHelpful updates? Follow us on YouTube for more entertaining videos.
