At least 30 injured after car plows into crowd outside music venue in Los Angeles

Yahooa day ago
At least 30 people were injured after a car plowed through a crowd in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, authorities said.
The incident took place outside the music venue The Vermont, near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue in east Los Angeles. At least seven people are now in critical condition, six are in serious condition and more than a dozen were treated on site, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. In total 23 patients were transported.
Among the injuries, the LAFD reported a male with a gunshot wound.
The crash occurred after an individual was removed from a nearby business, the Los Angeles Police Department said. That person then allegedly drove a vehicle into a crowd, according to police.
After the vehicle became disabled, bystanders in the crowd dragged the driver outside the car and began to physically assault them, according to police. At some point during the physical altercation, the driver was shot by a Hispanic male who is still outstanding.
The condition of the driver is unknown.
Authorities said 124 fire personnel are assisting at the scene.
The crowd outside the music venue included clubgoers, valet attendants and food vendors from a nearby taco stand, according to the fire department.
"LAFD is coordinating patient triage and transport at this time," authorities said in an initial statement early Saturday morning.
The police department is investigating the cause and motive of the crash.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Saturday. "I want to thank the more than 100 LAFD and LAPD personnel who responded to the scene to help to save lives."
She added, "The hearts of Angelenos are with all of the victims impacted this morning — a full investigation into what happened is underway."

Klobuchar rebuffs Trump's efforts to fault Dems in Epstein case

As President Donald Trump faces continued heat over his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar is pushing back against his attempts to shift the focus back to her party. "The president blaming Democrats for this disaster, Jake, is like that CEO that got caught on camera blaming Coldplay," Klobuchar (D-Minn.) told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday on "State of the Union." "OK, like this is his making. He was president when Epstein got indicted for these charges and went to prison. He was president when Epstein committed suicide." Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019. He died by suicide in his New York jail cell just over a month later. Backlash — largely from inside Trump's MAGA base — teed off when the White House announced in early July that a Department of Justice and FBI review had found no evidence of an incriminating client list connected to Epstein. Trump, whose return to the White House was keyed in part by a willingness to embrace conspiracy theories like the ones surrounding Epstein, has been keen to move on. But the furor has seen some of Trump's biggest supporters calling for the ouster of his attorney general, Pam Bondi, and predicting dire consequences lest he begin to take it seriously. The president, meanwhile, has raged. "Radical left Democrats," Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday, were responsible for the "Jeffrey Epstein Hoax." And they'd refrained from making any moves during Joe Biden's presidency, he said. "If there was a 'smoking gun' on Epstein, why didn't the Dems, who controlled the 'files' for four years, and had Garland and Comey in charge, use it? BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING!!!," the president wrote on social media Friday. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), one of several House Republicans who have called for the release of the government's Epstein files, echoed Trump's attacks against Democrats in a Sunday interview also on Tapper's show. "Where the heck have they been the last four years? I'm ticked off at everybody," he said. "Look, this thing should have been handled. Now we're at the point they're going to start dumping files." Klobuchar rejected claims that Democrats bore responsibility for the controversy. The White House, she said, had entered into a crisis of its own making. "The people that have been fomenting this are right-wing influencers, members of Congress, people who have a reason that they want to know what's in there," Klobuchar told Tapper. "They believe the president when he said, there's stuff in there that people should see."

Man, 29, Arrested for Allegedly Driving a Car into Los Angeles Crowd, Injuring 30 People

NEED TO KNOW A man has been arrested after police said he drove into a crowd of people outside a Los Angeles nightclub, injuring 30, on July 19 Fernando Ramirez, 29, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon The suspect is currently "in stable condition" at a hospital after the incidentA man has been arrested after police said he drove into a Los Angeles crowd and injured at least 30 people this weekend. After a vehicle plowed into the large group on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, Calif., around 2:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, July 19, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) identified the driver of the vehicle as Fernando Ramirez, according to multiple outlets, including CNN, ABC affiliate KABC and CBS News. LAPD Cmdr. Lillian Carranza told reporters, in footage shared by NBC News, that Ramirez, 29, was "surrounded by a number of individuals who pulled him out of the car" after he struck the crowd. "Somebody in that crowd reportedly shot the driver," she said. "So the driver was transported to the hospital, and he's undergoing surgery, but he's also in stable condition." Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to CBS News and KABC. Carranza also told reporters, per footage shared by KCAL, that authorities are considering charging him with attempted murder. Both CBS News and KABC reported that the suspect's charges will be decided by the district attorney. The LAPD and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office (LADA) did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Sunday, July 20. The LAPD confirmed on Facebook on July 19 that, upon arriving at the scene, authorities found the driver "being assaulted by bystanders" and determined he sustained a gunshot wound. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that there were 30 victims in total — including seven in critical condition, six in serious condition, 10 in fair condition and seven patients who "refused transport," per the LAPD. "The suspect who shot the driver fled the scene on foot and was last seen heading westbound from Vermont Avenue," the LAPD said, adding that the man was "possibly armed with a silver revolver." Photos from the scene show a vehicle near the Vermont Hollywood nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard with police tape surrounding it. According to KABC, which cited the LAPD, the situation took place after club security escorted a man out of Vermont Hollywood. Minutes later, the car was driven into the crowd. "They were all standing in line going into a nightclub. There was a taco cart out there, so they were ... getting some food, waiting to go in. And there's also a valet line there," LAFD Capt. Adam Van Gerpen told KABC. "The valet podium was taken out, the taco truck was taken out, and then a large number of people were impacted by the vehicle," he continued. Most of the victims struck by the car were female, the Associated Press reported. In a statement shared on Instagram on July 19, Vermont Hollywood said it was "deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred ... after the conclusion of an event and as patrons were exiting." "The suspect was immediately taken into custody by the LAPD, and an investigation is currently underway. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the person responsible for this horrific act is held fully accountable," the statement continued. "We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to the first responders for their swift and compassionate action in assisting those affected," concluded the club's statement. ICE director blames left-wing 'rhetoric' for rise in attacks on immigration officers

Acting ICE director Todd Lyons blamed rhetoric from "elected officials" for the rise in attacks against immigration officers on Sunday. Lyons made the comments during an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" that aired Sunday, tying the increased violence to President Donald Trump's political opponents. "I think the sharp increase in the rhetoric, especially from a lot of elected officials, that are shaming, if you will, or speaking out against ICE law enforcement mission is what's really increasing these attacks on officers," he said. Lyons noted that there has been an 830% increase in assaults on officers compared to 2024. He added that the spike in violence is also due to ICE officers being more "visible" in communities across the country as Trump's deportation campaign expands. "The immigration mission is one of the forefront of this administration, so there is a lot of scrutiny and publicity to it," Lyons said. The official also confirmed that ICE is not limiting its arrests to illegal immigrants who have been convicted of a separate crime. He said many illegal immigrants without criminal records have been taken in as "collateral arrests" during operations targeting violent migrants. Nevertheless, he added that ICE "targets the worst of the worst." ICE officers themselves have spoken out about the increased violence and criticism they have faced under the new administration. "It has been very sad to see how we're villainized, the names used towards us," officer Kristian Moreno told "My View" host Lara Trump on Fox News this weekend. "Just doing this [interview] right now, I had to talk to my family about it and say, 'Hey, this is something that I believe in, something I think is important for us to get our stories out there and let the American public know we're humans.' We got a job to do. We're just enforcing the law. We're not making up the law, and it's sad, but we just keep pushing through it," he added. He and officers Edgardo Centeno and Chris Sandoval shared their perspectives on the violence ICE officers risk daily. "We have to do our job. We raised our hands to defend the Constitution, and we're enforcing the law, so we're adjusting as we see what's going on in our country, but it's saddening my heart, especially when you serve in combat and come back and see your country so divided," Centeno said.
