Pearson Advances English Language Assessment with Enhanced PTE and New Express Test - Middle East Business News and Information

Mid East Info14-07-2025
Pearson (FTSE: PSON.L), the world's lifelong learning company, today announces updates to its English language testing portfolio. These include enhancements to the Pearson Test of English (PTE) and the launch of the Pearson English Express Test, bringing new advances in secure, accurate, and trusted assessments. Together, they demonstrate Pearson's commitment to improving the testing experience for governments, universities, and test takers worldwide.
With over 30 million expatriates in the Middle East, English fluency is becoming essential for career and economic advancement. Driven by demand for international education, global job mobility, and digital transformation, the region is placing growing emphasis on English proficiency.
According to Pearson, 85% of learners believe English is vital for professional growth, and in Saudi Arabia, fluent speakers can earn up to twice as much as their peers. In response, regional stakeholders are ramping up efforts to deliver effective language training, digital learning solutions and standardized assessments for the future workforce.
Enhancements to the Pearson Test of English (PTE)
Starting in August 2025, PTE Academic will introduce two new speaking tasks: 'Respond to a Situation' and 'Summarize a Group Discussion'. These additions precisely assess how test takers communicate in real-world situations, demonstrating key skills needed for academic and professional success.
The scoring model is also being enhanced, with advanced AI working alongside human experts to better detect copied or unoriginal responses.
To help test takers perform at their best, Pearson has introduced new preparation resources tailored to the enhanced PTE Academic, including scored practice tests, PTE expert courseware, test taker webinars, and video content.
Trusted fundamentals remain
The core features of PTE remain: it is fully computer-based, primarily AI scored, and delivers fast results, typically within two days. The test continues to be trusted by more than 3,500 institutions and millions of learners worldwide.
Growth in global test center network
PTE's secure test center network continues to expand worldwide, with 30 centers opened so far in 2025, bringing the total to 517 locations. New openings across Canada, China, Australia, India, Vietnam, and 12 other countries are supporting growth in key migration and study abroad markets.
In the UAE, leading universities including the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, Middlesex University Dubai, and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah already accept PTE Academic as part of their admissions process.
Introducing the Pearson English Express Test
Responding to demand for a trusted, accessible test for US-bound learners, Pearson is launching the Pearson English Express Test, a new online assessment to expand access to secure testing.
The one-hour test can be taken anytime, anywhere, offering an affordable alternative for those without access to a test center. Results are available within minutes, with a certified report delivered in under 48 hours.
Meeting university needs
The Pearson English Express Test addresses the growing demand from universities for secure and accurate English proficiency assessments. Institutions can set scores using Pearson's Global Scale of English (GSE) proficiency scale and receive results through the same secure platform used for PTE Academic.
Universities will receive samples of written and spoken responses for added assurance. Security features leverage Pearson's 30 years of expertise, and include identity and equipment checks, human oversight, and dual-camera monitoring of the test environment.
Sharon Hague, President of English Language Learning at Pearson, said: 'Across the Middle East, demand for high-quality English language assessment is growing rapidly as learners pursue global education, career, and migration opportunities. We are investing in the future of assessment. We know that English tests must reflect the skills people need to thrive in academic and professional settings and deliver results institutions can trust when the stakes are high. We're responding with enhanced test security and new tasks that better reflect real-world communication. And because these are life-changing moments for test takers, we're providing new preparation tools to help them feel confident and ready on test day.'
Helping more learners take the next step
Pearson's latest investments meet the different needs of governments, institutions, and learners worldwide, as part of an ongoing programme of innovation and development.
Enhancements to PTE Academic take effect from 7 August 2025, with further information available on our website.
The Pearson English Express test will be available from Q4 in Brazil, Mexico, the US, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, with additional markets to follow in 2026.

Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak: Reports - World

Newcastle have rejected Liverpool's opening bid to sign unsettled Sweden striker Alexander Isak, according to reports on Friday. Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million ($159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back to back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said: "He is still our player. He's contracted to us. "We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. "My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control." Liverpool have spent over £250 million so far in the summer window, with Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili joining Wirtz and Ekitike at Anfield. Liverpool sign Ekitiké from Frankfurt and take offseason spending to $342 million - World

Liverpool signed France forward Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday to continue the Premier League champion's offseason spending spree. Ekitiké is Liverpool's latest big-money signing after Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez — taking its outlay to around $342 million. The 23-year-old Ekitiké has joined for a fee of 69 million pounds ($93.5 million) and signed a six-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because details have not been made public, said the fee could rise by a further 10 million pounds ($13.5 million). We have reached an agreement for the transfer of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, subject to international clearance 😎 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 23, 2025 Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been busy strengthening a team that won its record-equaling 20th English league title last season — in particular in attack. Wirtz, signed from Bayer Leverkusen last month for a fee that could rise to a British record 116 million pounds ($156 million), is considered one of the brightest talents in Europe. And Etikité is another player who has shone in Germany after leaving Paris Saint-Germain last year. He scored 22 in 48 appearances in his one full season with Frankfurt, which has made a big profit on him after buying him for a reported $19 million last year. Ekitiké's move comes weeks after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain. There is uncertainty about the future of other Liverpool forwards Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, who have both been targeted by teams in Europe during the offseason. The Merseyside club has not retained a league title since winning three in a row between 1982 and '84, which was before the inception of the Premier League. It is likely to face challenges from Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, who have all been active in the transfer market since the end of the season. Ekitiké is the latest big-money departure from Frankfurt after forward Omar Marmoush joined Man City for a reported $73 million in January. Marmoush was the team's top-scorer at the time, but Ekitiké responded with his best performances in a Frankfurt shirt to help the team finish third in the Bundesliga for Champions League qualification. Egyptian-Japanese KOSEN Institute opens admissions for preparatory school graduates - Society

Egypt's Education Development Fund (EDF) has announced the opening of admissions to the Egyptian-Japanese KOSEN Institute in 10th of Ramadan City for students holding a preparatory school certificate, starting 21 July and closing on 31 July at 4pm. EDF Secretary General Rasha Sharaf said this year's admission is available to students who scored 85 percent or higher in their preparatory stage, according to an EDF statement on Tuesday. She added that the institute offers a unique educational experience in partnership with Japan, aiming to produce highly qualified graduates with top-tier technological skills. KOSEN is a five-year higher education institution in Japan, where students can enrol at the age of 15 after graduating from junior high school, to foster engineers in high demand by society. Inspired by this model, Egypt has adopted the KOZEN programme. This five-year advanced engineering education system focuses on early field exposure to connect students with real-world market needs. On 15 July, Egypt signed a cooperation protocol with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to officially launch the programme. Under the agreement, the first group of students will begin the five-year Japanese-inspired engineering diploma in September at the Productivity and Vocational Training Authority centre in 10th of Ramadan City. The diploma qualifies graduates to enrol in technological universities, engineering faculties, and computer science colleges, ensuring a smooth transition into higher education and careers in high-demand technical fields. Application procedures, entrance test Sharaf noted that passing a written entrance exam, followed by a personal interview to assess the student's vocational aptitude and basic skill level, is among the admission requirements. Application procedures begin by creating a personal account on the fund's official website, verifying the email through a confirmation message, registering for the entrance test, selecting an appropriate exam centre, and uploading all required documents to the platform. Sharaf affirmed that all applicants will be contacted with their test dates and payment instructions for the exam fees. The admission test for the institute is a multidisciplinary exam conducted in two sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. The exam covers four subjects: Mathematics, Science, English Language, and IQ. Each subject consists of 60 questions and is administered in English. Examinations will be held from 4 to 13 August 2025, and the passing score is 50 out of a maximum of 100. Moreover, Sharaf highlighted a cooperation protocol signed between the fund and Misr El Kheir Foundation to offer 100 scholarships covering 50 percent of tuition fees for outstanding and financially disadvantaged students, provided they pass the entrance assessments. She also reaffirmed the fund's commitment to supporting high-achieving students, who are interested in modern technological education that aligns with labour market demands and offers real development opportunities. "This effort aligns with the state's vision to enhance the quality and outcomes of technological education in support of comprehensive development," she concluded.
