PUTRAJAYA : Two more judges' panels will be set up to speed up the disposal of criminal and civil appeals, newly appointed Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais said.
He said there are currently eight panels.
'Hopefully, with more judges appointed, we can expedite the disposal of cases,' he told reporters after witnessing the elevation of six Court of Appeal judges and the confirmation of 14 judicial commissioners as High Court judges here today.
With the appointment of the six judges, the Court of Appeal now comprises 32 judges, the maximum allowed under the Federal Constitution.
Bakar is the 13th president since the appellate court's establishment in 1994.
The Court of Appeal is often referred to as the 'engine of the judiciary' since it serves as the intermediate appellate court, reviewing decisions made by the High Court and the apex court for cases that originate from subordinate courts.
Bakar described his appointment as a huge responsibility and a significant challenge in a country with a multiracial and multireligious population.
'Of course, as president, I cannot satisfy everyone, but I will discharge my duties without fear of favour,' he said.
He also said there were highly capable judges who would assist him in fulfilling his responsibilities.
Newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, who had earlier taken his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara, was also present.
At the Palace of Justice, Bakar took his oath of office before senior Court of Appeal judge P Ravinthran.
Justice Azizah Nawawi, the new chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, took her oath of office before Dean Wayne Daly, the most senior judge in East Malaysia.
She is also the first woman to hold the position.

Govt to boost creative economy, prioritise animation sector

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said MyCreative Ventures would manage funding while Finas would oversee certification and licensing. KUALA LUMPUR : The government is focusing on strengthening the creative economy to boost Malaysia's competitiveness and produce high-value content for both the local and international markets. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the aim is to develop commercially viable works that can be exported, while also nurturing talent and expanding the creative industry's value chain. 'We hope these efforts will increase our competitiveness through the production of works with high commercial value for local and international enjoyment, including the exports of IPs,' he said at a press conference after the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today. Fahmi said his ministry would direct MyCreative Ventures to manage funding while Finas would oversee certification and licensing – particularly in line with the government's focus on animation. He said this follows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's instruction to prioritise the animation sector. Fahmi also announced a nationwide online briefing tonight to grassroots leaders to explain the government's initiatives under the 13MP. 'When we support grassroots efforts in spreading government aspirations, the people benefit in the long run,' he said. Earlier today, Anwar tabled the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat, which included major reforms to the education and economic systems, and policies for an ageing population.

Over 30,000 expected to rally for Palestine in KL on Aug 9

Humanity for Gaza chairman Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz (fifth from left) with Malaysia Bangkit 4 Gaza director Apandi Mohamad (sixth from left). KUALA LUMPUR : A mass rally to show support for the Palestinian cause will be held at Dataran Merdeka here on Aug 9, with organisers expecting more than 30,000 people to attend. The Himpunan Perdana Nasional: Malaysia Bangkit untuk Gaza rally is organised by the group Humanity for Gaza, backed by leaders from various political parties. Malaysia Bangkit 4 Gaza director, Apandi Mohamad, said participants would begin gathering from 4pm at key locations like Pasar Seni, Masjid Negara, and Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad before marching to Dataran Merdeka. They aim to bring together Malaysians from all backgrounds and political affiliations against Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. Humanity for Gaza chairman Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz said they hoped to show unity across racial, religious and political lines in condemning the actions of the Zionist regime. 'Malaysians must stand together for justice and peace. This is not just a Palestinian issue, it is a human issue,' he said at a press conference here, joined by former Batu MP Tian Chua, among others. Malaysia has long expressed strong support for Palestine, with multiple rallies attended by thousands held over the past two years to protest Israel's actions in Gaza. In a video posted last week, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged world leaders to act with urgency to push for a halt to the Israeli aggression in Gaza. Anwar also appealed to US president Donald Trump to use his influence to pressure Israel into halting its attacks on Gaza and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
