Gogic says St Mirren are ready to bounce back after 'sore' Celtic defeat

BBC Newsa day ago
St Mirren defender Alex Gogic admits defeat at Celtic Park was "a sore one" but says the squad will "look forward" to their next fixture, and not lick their wounds.St Mirren defended stoutly for 87 minutes against Celtic, with a Luke McCowan strike that deflected off Buddies' captain Mark O'Hara being the only breakthrough. The Saints' rear guard received plenty of plaudits as they frustrated the champions for large periods of the game, very rarely allowing Celtic to create any clear-cut chances."Maybe we could have been better on the ball in the first half", Gogic told BBC Scotland. "But we defended so well, and then to concede with a deflection, maybe it wasn't meant to be.""I think as defenders, we just love defending and we realise that's our first job. We work on it every day. It was a good test for the first game, and I think we did well."And despite an opening-day defeat, Gogic maintains he and his team-mates will take positives from the loss, especially from their defensive display. He added: "You want to play against the best players, and obviously they [Celtic] have some of the best players in the league. When you do well, you're confident after it and you're happy with the work you've done."Next up for St Mirren is a home game against Motherwell. And the Saints defender insists his thoughts will quickly turn to that game and trying to get off the mark this season in the league."The games come quick though, you can't sit and look back."We've got to look forward and we've got a big game coming up, so we need to go and get three points. I think at home we've always been good, we've always played very well and we always want to get three points. We can't wait for the next game."

McCowan on embracing Champions League play-off pressure

Luke McCowan insists Celtic will be ready for the "pressure" of their Champions League play-off against either Kairat Almaty or Slovan 27-year-old reflected on last term when Celtic reached the knockout phase of the competition for the first time in 12 years, before being narrowly beaten by Bayern Munich, and the midfielder said "there's always a demand for more"."These players play under massive pressure all the time, it's what playing at this club takes," the former Dundee captain added."You need to be ready for that pressure, you need to have your chest out, your head high and go and show you're a Celtic player."That's what it demands and that's what the manager wants. Pressure in a game hopefully brings out your best qualities."I'm sure we will be [ready]. I mean, if you were to ask us to play it this midweek, I'm sure we'd all be ready."When those games come around, it's about embracing it and knowing what the challenge is going to be."I think we showed that last year, but it's about proving it again. There's always a demand for more at this club."

Bengals QB Joe Burrow to play 'several series' vs. Eagles

August 5 - Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and select starters will see action in Cincinnati's preseason opener against the host Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, coach Zac Taylor told reporters Tuesday. "Several series is what we'll give those starters," Taylor said. Burrow, 28, has thrown a total of eight passes in preseason games the past four years. The two-time Pro Bowl selection completed 5 of 7 passes in the 2024 preseason, his first action in an exhibition game since 2021 when he threw an incompletion in his only attempt. Taylor also noted that his starters will see their most preseason playing time in their Aug. 18 date with the host Washington Commanders. Per Taylor, tight end Mike Gesicki, defensive end Trey Hendrickson, defensive tackle BJ Hill and defensive backs Cam Taylor-Britt and Daxton Hill will sit out Thursday's game versus the Eagles. Cincinnati's starters are not expected to play in the preseason finale against the visiting Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 23. Giving Burrow more preseason snaps may reflect the Bengals' desire to avoid another slow start to the regular season. Cincinnati has started 0-2 in each of the past three campaigns, including 0-3 in 2024. --Field Level Media

Celtic and Rangers make huge Premiership fixture postponement decision for Champions League play offs

The matchweek three schedule has been confirmed but it comes with two huge caveats Hibs and Rangers have seen requests granted to postpone their matchweek three fixtures if they progress in Europe as part of a new policy to aid our clubs in their Euro campaigns. ‌ But Celtic have decided against having their game with Livingston, sandwiched in between their Champions League playoff with either Slovan Bratislava or Kairat Almaty, pushed back. ‌ The SPFL finalised the schedule for the weekend of August 23/24, with St Mirren vs Rangers moved to the Sunday noon slot for Sky coverage, after Falkirk vs Hibs was previously picked up for the Saturday teatime game on Premier Sports. ‌ But it comes with the caveat that both of those games will be postponed until later in the season should the clubs involved take part in European action that week. Rangers face Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox tonight before a second leg in the Czech Republic next week and, should they progress, they will be involved in playoffs on August 19/20 and August 26/27 – either side of their scheduled clash with St Mirren. The same goes for Hibs who, if they can make it past Partizan Belgrade, will face Legia Warsaw or AEK Larnaca on August 21 and August 28. Celtic are also in action against Livingston on Saturday August 23 with Champions League playoffs either side but have not requested a postponement under the new policy. A league statement reads: "The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) can today provide a further update on match arrangements for round three of the William Hill Premiership. "As previously confirmed, Dundee United v Aberdeen on Saturday August 23 has been postponed following a request by Aberdeen, who will be participating in the Europa League play-offs. ‌ "The new policy, which allows clubs involved in UEFA play-off matches to postpone their round three fixtures, was approved by the SPFL Board in April to support clubs aiming to reach the league phase of UEFA competitions. "Falkirk v Hibernian was selected by Premier Sports for live broadcast on Saturday August 23, kick-off 5.45pm, but, as earlier announced, following a request from Hibernian will also be postponed if they overcome FK Partizan to reach the Conference League play-off round. "St Mirren v Rangers has been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports on Sunday August 24, kick-off 12 noon, but following a request from Rangers will be postponed if they reach the play-off round of the Champions League. ‌ "Following discussions with Celtic, their home match versus Livingston remains scheduled for 3.00pm on Saturday August 23, alongside Hearts v Motherwell and Kilmarnock v Dundee. "New dates for postponed round three matches will be announced following publication of the UEFA league phase fixtures at the end of August."
