Wayne Rooney not taking Macclesfield job
The former Manchester United and England star has been subject of interest from the National League North side as Robbie Savage edges towards taking the Forest Green post.
Macclesfield this week made an approach to Rooney's agent Paul Stretford but, after careful consideration, the 39-year-old is not going to be making himself available for the job.
United's all-time top scorer managed Derby, DC United and Birmingham after hanging up his boots, before taking charge of Plymouth for the first half of last season.
Rooney is understood to be focused on media opportunities for the foreseeable future and Macclesfield were not considered the right move at the moment, despite admiration for the work being done there.
The phoenix club were founded in October 2020 after Macclesfield Town were wound up, with chairman Robert Smethurst overseeing the side's rise through the leagues.
The Silkmen started life in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division in 2021/22 and last season were promoted as Northern Premier League Premier Division champions under boss Savage.

Bryan Mbeumo is a major attacking target, while further investment could hinge on an ability to offload some out-of-favour high earners. Rashford's ex-colleague shares advice Timothy Fosu-Mensah broke into Manchester United's first team at the same time as Marcus Rashford, and believes the forward needs to ensure he can find a club where he feels good. The Dutch defender made his Premier League bow on the same day as Rashford, and was speaking as he continues his own search for a new club after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. 'I just want him to be happy. Everybody just wants him to be happy," Fosu-Mensah told The Independent. "The most important things is for him to feel good, for him to feel happy. Although Varandas acknowledged that Gyokeres is likely to depart, he stated that the fee will be much higher than the potential price of £60million plus £10million in add-ons. He also claimed that Gyokeres is worth more than Matheus Cunha, who joined Manchester United from Wolves for £62.5million. Varandas said: 'Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. 'We have been watching the market and I saw [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, leave for €65million. I saw Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both forwards but who, in my opinion, do not have Viktor's market value or quality, being negotiated for around €75million. 'Given the demands we consider fair, I believe Viktor could leave – unless he has the worst agent in the world, which is hard for me to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world.' Former Manchester United footballer Paul Ince charged with drink-driving
Former England and Manchester United footballer Paul Ince has been charged with drink-driving in Cheshire. The 57-year-old was arrested after a black Range Rover collided with a central reservation on Chester High Road in Neston at about 5pm on Saturday, according to Cheshire police. Ince has been bailed to appear at Chester magistrates court on Friday 18 July. The former footballer made more than 200 appearances for Manchester United during the early to mid-1990s, winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup. He also played for West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Inter Milan during a career that spanned 20 years. He won 53 caps for England and, in 1993, became the first black footballer to captain the national team, leading the side in a friendly against the United States just a year after making his senior debut. After his retirement, Ince moved into management, taking charge of clubs including Macclesfield Town, MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool. His most recent role was at Reading, which he managed between 2022 and 2023. In a statement, police said: 'At around 5pm on Saturday 28 June, police were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston. 'The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier. Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man. 'Paul Ince, of Quarry Road, Neston, has since been charged with drink-driving.' 'Ince has been bailed to appear at Chester magistrates court on Friday 18 July.'
