BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France - The Netherlands' Mathieu van der Poel won stage two of the Tour de France ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar in a sprint finish on Sunday.
A large leading group stayed together for much of the stage which boiled up into a mass sprint for the line, Van der Poel edging out Pogacar in a photo finish with Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard taking third place.
Alpecin-Deceuninck's Van der Poel also claimed the race leader's yellow jersey after winning the longest stage of the Tour, a 209.1km route from Lauwin-Planque to the northern coastal city of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
"It was super difficult, the final was actually harder than I thought," Van der Poel said.
"People said I was a favourite for today, but if you see which riders were up there on the climbs, I think I did a really good job to be there."
Alpecin-Deceuninck can celebrate their second Tour win this year after Belgian Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage on Saturday.
Due to adverse weather conditions that caused logistical issues, the start of the stage was delayed by about 15 minutes.

Novak Djokovic wary despite Wimbledon form, Jannik Sinner faces Grigor Dimitrov

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Novak Djokovic plays a forehand return to Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic during their third round match at Wimbledon. LONDON - Novak Djokovic and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner face their stiffest tests of the tournament on July 7 as they aim to take another step towards a blockbuster semi-final face-off at Wimbledon. Djokovic, who has a record 25th Gland Slam singles title in his sights, meets Australia's Alex de Minaur while Sinner faces the talented Grigor Dimitrov. Five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek is the main attraction in a wide-open side of the women's draw as she takes on Clara Tauson. 'Complete' De Minaur concerns Djokovic Djokovic was in supreme form as he demolished compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to the delight of his seven-year-old daughter Tara, who enjoyed a post-match celebratory dance with her dad. But the seven-time champion is wary of the threat that lies ahead of him in the second week, even before potential meetings with Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who has beaten Djokovic in each of the past two finals. De Minaur was forced to pull out of a quarter-final meeting at Wimbledon with the Serb last year due to injury but gets another shot at glory against one of the sport's all-time greats. A two-time winner of grass court titles, the world No. 11 has dropped just one set on his way to the last 16. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'You're not super excited to play Alex de Minaur on grass, that's for sure, because he's so quick and he's a complete player.' Dimitrov not stressed by dominant Sinner Jannik Sinner does not have the Wimbledon track record of Djokovic or Alcaraz, but the Italian has been the most dominant player in the men's draw in the opening week. The US Open and Australian Open champion has matched the men's Open Era record at Wimbledon for fewest games lost – 17 – in reaching the fourth round, set by Jan Kodes back in 1972. Sinner is also yet to lose his serve this year at the All England Club, not that his next opponent appears daunted by that prospect. Let's have fun,' said 34-year-old Dimitrov, who knows his days on the show courts at Grand Slams are numbered. The Bulgarian appeared destined to be a future Wimbledon champion when he made the semi-finals in 2014, but has never progressed beyond the fourth round since. 'Smooth' Swiatek finds feet on grass A rare defeat at the French Open has helped Swiatek finally feel at home on the grass as the former world No. 1 eyes just a second Wimbledon quarter-final on July 7. Aryna Sabalenka beat Swiatek in the semi-finals at Roland Garros after the Polish player won four titles there in five years, but a slightly earlier exit gave her more time to adjust to the grass. Swiatek reached her first grass-court final in Bad Homburg last week, after which she said there is 'some hope' for her on the surface. 'This year on grass I had some moments where I just felt comfortable and I didn't have to think much. It was just pretty smooth.' A flurry of early exits for all of the top six seeds other than Sabalenka also means Swiatek could make the final without having to play another top-10 player. AFP

Mexico beat US 2-1 to win 10th Gold Cup title

Mandatory Credit: Thomas Shea-Imagn Images HOUSTON, Texas - Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday to successfully defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup crown and capture their 10th title in a pulsating final that delivered drama from start to finish. The U.S. went ahead just four minutes in when Sebastian Berhalter's free-kick found Chris Richards, whose powerful header struck the underside of the crossbar and cannoned straight down, with the referee confirming the goal was good. Mexico found the equalizer through Raul Jimenez in the 27th minute after the striker converted from close range. He then dedicated the goal to the late Diogo Jota, his former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate, by holding up a Mexico shirt with the Portuguese forward's name on it. "We came from behind and are leaving with the title," Jimenez said. "It's great and really important to clinch the crown a summer before the World Cup. It's something we've been trying to do since the tournament began." Despite Mexico's first-half dominance they struggled to capitalise on numerous golden opportunities. Roberto Alvarado and 16-year-old Gilberto Mora both tested U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese, with Mora's venomous long-range effort requiring a crucial save from the American shot-stopper. Alex Freeman came closest when his header struck Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagon in the face and Diego Luna blazed the rebound over the crossbar. Mexico cranked up the pressure after the break and got the crucial second goal when Edson Alvarez powered home a header, though there was a nervous wait due to a VAR review for potential offside. However, the goal stood and the Mexican contingent erupted with wild celebrations. "I'm speechless. We spent 35 days in intense training, away from our families, with the intention of winning. There's certainly room for improvement, but we're leaving happy and with our feet firmly on the ground," midfielder Alvarez said. "When they first disallowed the goal, it was crazy. It threw me off balance, but I was really happy to see that it was valid." Patrick Agyemang had the chance to equalise in the dying minutes but his finish just missed the mark in a tense finale as Mexico held firm to secure their triumph. Mexico's victory secures back-to-back Gold Cup triumphs and brings them a record-extending 10th crown. Mexico also won the CONCACAF Nations Championship, the Gold Cup's predecessor, three times. Anisimova ends Czech three-peat hopes with victory over Noskova

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 6, 2025 Amanda Anisimova of the U.S. celebrates after winning her round of 16 match against Czech Republic's Linda Noskova REUTERS/Toby Melville LONDON - Amanda Anisimova ended Linda Noskova's hopes of completing a 'Czech three-peat' at Wimbledon on Sunday after the American 13th seed brought out her A-game to end her rival's barnstorming run with a 6-2 5-7 6-4 victory to reach the quarter-finals. After Marketa Vondrousova's and Barbora Krejcikova's unexpected triumphs at the All England Club over the past two years, 30th seed Noskova would have harboured hopes of following in their footsteps, especially as she was the last Czech standing among the eight who had started in the women's draw. However, Anisimova wasted little time in exposing Noskova's lack of grasscourt craft as she broke the 30th seed for a 2-0 lead with some crisp hitting from the baseline and again in the eighth game to capture the first set with a scorching forehand winner. Played under a closed Court One roof on a soggy day at Wimbledon, the contest failed to catch fire during the opening set as the majority of ticket holders in the 12,000-capacity arena had abandoned their seats following British hope Cameron Norrie's nerve-jangling 4-1/2 hour win over Nicolas Jarry. The smattering of spectators who did stick around saw Noskova, who had won only one match at Wimbledon before this week, find her comfort zone in the floodlit arena in the second set as she broke for a 2-1 lead. The 20-year-old missed her chance to level the match when she served at 5-4, with Anisimova saving a set point with a mis-hit service return winner en route to grabbing the break back to level at 5-5. Noskova did not dwell on that near-miss and she broke again for a 6-5 lead before making sure her opponent did not get a look-in on her next set point, firing down an ace to seal it. Anisimova matched her best Wimbledon result by reaching the quarter-finals for the second time and will next meet Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. REUTERS
