Senior citizens to shine in ‘Voice in the Shadows' Concert

Eliza (seated, centre) flanked by Irene (right) and Tan (left) with some of the competitors. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): A wave of nostalgia will sweep through Sabah as 70 senior citizens from across Malaysia take the stage for the Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert, a Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese singing competition celebrating veteran performers. The event will be held on August 17 at the Putera Ballroom in Bukit Padang, with a 4D stage setup to recreate a mini concert experience. A preliminary round will take place on August 16 to select the finalists. Organising chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh said during a press conference that participants hail from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. Adding star power to the event is veteran Malaysian songstress Irene Tan, a former Astro talent, who will be launching her fourth album titled One Seed. The album symbolises her effort to plant a seed for the competition to grow in Sabah. 'One of the goals is to promote tourism in Sabah, especially to senior citizens from Kuala Lumpur who have never been here,' said Eliza. 'We'll also be showcasing Sabah's beautiful tourist destinations to our guests.' The event also aims to foster closer interaction between participants from Sabah, West Malaysia and Sarawak. Notably, several businessmen — including a Musang King plantation owner — are expected to attend. Eliza shared that proceeds from the sale of 40 to 50 banquet tables will go toward helping Primary Six students who have excelled academically continue their education at private independent schools. 'All profits will support underprivileged pupils and will be managed by the Kian Kok Alumni Association,' she added. Also present at the press conference were co-organiser Dato' Tan Seng Huat and Irene Tan. The event is expected to be officiated by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

Popularity, ‘bak kut teh' and paving way for idols: Klang-born Lingling returns home as KIIRAS thrills Malaysian fans

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — It was homecoming for Klang-born K-pop idol Lingling, as she and her group KIIRAS dropped by Malaysia this weekend for the first time since their debut as part of The Music Journey 2 roadshow, which is a live, free-entry musical showcase organised by Astro. In an interview with Malay Mail yesterday, Lingling admitted to an emotional return home, with fans on social media showing their love and support. 'We've debuted for two months now, but before going overseas, we didn't really feel like celebrities,' Lingling told Malay Mail. 'But when we met our fans in Singapore and Malaysia, that's when it finally hit us — we're celebrities now.' She also reflected on how life in Korea differs, especially when it comes to public transportation. 'In Korea, I feel like I can literally go anywhere without a car, just by taking the subway or walking. 'These days I really love walking so much — it's been really fun,' she said. Besides Lingling, KIIRAS also includes members Harin, Kurumi, Kylie, Doyeon, and Roah, — with the group impressing the scene with their debut in May with the single 'Kill Ma Bo$$', followed by a follow-up promotional song 'Ziller!'. Some members expressed a desire to try other dishes but hadn't had the chance just yet, such as Kurumi, who was keen to taste durian. Meanwhile, Harin and Kylie both mentioned wanting to try Lingling's favourite Malaysian dish made famous in her hometown — bak kut teh. The group also expressed hopes to explore some of Kuala Lumpur's most iconic malls together, including Pavilion Bukit Bintang, Sunway Pyramid, and even some historic landmarks like the renowned Batu Caves. The performance yesterday saw fans turning up in droves, singing along and showing their affection for KIIRAS, with the group noting the crowd's energy as 'positive, fantastic, and amazing.' The group has expressed hopes to perform across Asia, with countries like Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand on their list, while also sharing a strong desire to return to Malaysia. 'We're so thankful to the Malaysian fans — we didn't expect so many people to come just to support us, screaming so loudly with so much energy,' said Lingling. 'We would definitely come again,' she added. K-pop group KIIRAS are eager to enjoy Malaysia on their first visit since debut. 'We hope people will know about KIIRAS, and that our songs, as well as our group, will be recognised by many,' said Lingling, speaking on behalf of the group. In an era where K-pop is embraced across the nation, countless children and teenagers dream of becoming idols themselves — and with Lingling making history as the first female Malaysian to do so, that wave of inspiration has only grown stronger. The members of KIIRAS offered words of encouragement to aspiring K-pop idols in Malaysia, urging them to never give up on their dreams. 'I want to say this because I'm from Malaysia — it may be tough, but just try and don't give up and your dreams will come true,' added Lingling. 'Keep working hard and keep trying your best,' she concluded.

A treat for Nusantara music fans - Indonesian star Pamungkas and local boys Fugo join in the fun for Panggung Purnama concert on Sept 28

It is going to be one unforgettable night for Nusantara music fans - Indonesian star Pamungkas and local boys Fugo have confirmed their participation for the Panggung Purnama concert at Zepp Kuala Lumpur on Sept 28. And the two new acts will join the already confirmed top Indonesian singer Bilal Ahmad Indrajaya for the exciting fiesta. The concert promises to be a clash of flavours, sounds, and South-East Asian cultures, bringing together selected artistes who have the power of art and stories that pierce the soul for the special night. The music festival organised by UdaraLaskhar said in a media statement that it will be a festival like none other for music fans in Malaysia and also the South-East Asia region. "This will be a very special night for music fans. We have three top-class acts and they will surely entertain the fans as seen in any other music festival," said John Labu, the representative of UdaraLaskhar. "And to open the curtain on the first phase, who else would be more deserving than Bilal Ahmad - an alternative music icon full of mystery, yet so close to regional fans. And to make it all so perfect, now Pamungkas and Fugo have also joined the party." Taking a look at the acts for the festival, the talented Bilal Ahmad Indrajaya (full name) is an Indonesian singer-songwriter from South Tangerang. Bilal began his professional music career by releasing a song titled "Biar" in 2018. He was nominated for the Best Alternative Collaboration at the 2021 Indonesian Music Awards with Reality Club for the song "I Wish I Was Your Joke" and has also released a mini album titled Purnama in 2019. His appearances at festivals such as the BNI Java Jazz Festival 2024 and collaborations with Malaysian artists such as Malaysian Noh Salleh in "Niscaya" prove that Bilal is not only respected in his country but also has a special place in the hearts of Malaysian fans. As for Rizki Rahmahadian Pamungkas, better known by his stage name Pamungkas, is an Indonesian all-in-one talent - a singer, record producer, songwriter, and actor. Pamungkas' introduction to music began at the age of 8, when he took drum lessons at the prompting of his mother, who had hoped that his hearing might improve in his left ear, which is half deaf. And there has been no stopping this amazing Indonesian talent since then. Pamungkas joined a band called Potenzio in 2009, and they released an album titled "Jingga. Pamungkas released his debut solo album, "Walk the Talk", in 2018 to popular acclaim. The album was, in fact, first released in 2017 with 10 songs, but re-released in 2018 with six more songs and a new cover. Most of the songs are written in English, but three are in Indonesian. Songs in the album, such as "Sorry", "One Only", and "Kenangan Manis" ("Sweet Memories"), received over 30 million streams. In April 2021, Pamungkas' song "To the Bone" from Flying Solo became the longest-running top song on Spotify's Indonesia Top 50 chart. The video for the song had received over 240 million views on YouTube by July 2022. Then in the same year, he announced his first tour outside Indonesia, starting with shows in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. On top of that, in January 2024, the talented Pamungkas announced that he had also joined a rock band, The Krankers, as their drummer. As for the Malaysian group Fugo, they are a fast-rising face in the Malaysian music scene. Fugo is a Malaysian alternative indie pop rock band formed in October 2019. Their music is a mixture of vintage electro vibes with a modern sound, drawing influences from late 70's, 80's pop, funk, modern rock, and new wave music. Fugo released their impressive self-titled EP in April 202,1, which included crowd-favorites 'Lagu Balada Kala Hujan' & their stellar collaboration with Bil Musa, 'Moon & The Sun'. In 2022, they hit the top limelight with the haunting single, 'As Long As We Stay', said to be among the best songs heard by fans that year. Last year, their album '99' garnered critical acclaim with the album-titled single '99' and the soulful 'Pentas Sandiwara'. "This concert is one where we are realizing the dreams and requests of fans through the debut of Pamungkas and Fugo joining Bilal Indrajaya at Panggung Purnama on Sept 28 at Zepp Kuala Lumpur," said John Labu. "We are confident that Pamungkas, Fugo, and Bilal Indrajaya will leave a lasting impression on all. We expect this concert to be an unforgettable experience for all Nusantara music lovers." Tickets for the concert are priced at: Bintang (RM179), Langit (RM199), Awan (RM249), Bumi (RM239) dan Purnama (RM399) and can be bought at
