Animated film inspired by Co Fermanagh mother's poem to her daughters ready for Galway premiere

The Journal25-06-2025
A FILMMAKER MOTHER-OF-THREE from Co Fermanagh is to have her book-turned-animation premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh next month.
Ciara Tinney, 39, a former assistant director on hit fantasy drama Game Of Thrones, said it does not feel real that the film Wildkind will be shown at the festival.
The mother-of-three began writing her poem Wildkind after giving birth to her first daughter Adabelle, 11, and began to illustrate it when her daughters Fiadh Ros, eight, and Birdie Blue, six, were born.
The book is an ode to the landscape and nature of her homeland.
'Motherhood naturally became a really creative time, because you just had these huge thoughts,' she told the PA news agency.
'So I just started to write them.
'The book is a poem written for my daughters, and it is, very basically, just a story of how I want them to live, and how I want to live with them, focusing on being kind and staying connected to the wild.
'Kids today are being labelled as digital natives.
'The idea that they're spending half of their time in a digital landscape is just crazy, especially for someone who grew up in Fermanagh and used to just run about the fields.'
Tinney self-published Wilkdkind and sold around 300 copies, before embarking on transforming the book into an animation, voiced by her mother.
She added: 'A lot of the kids books and things that were around when Ada was tiny, it's very rainbow coloured and very high stimulation artwork and crazy animals, like tigers.
'But we just didn't have that here. So I kind of thought it'd be lovely to have a more realistic and view on what our wild is.
'It's not going to be a rainforest jungle, but there's still so much to explore here in Ireland.

'It's just this little grounding, the fluid wilderness, and the watercolour imagery, it's supposed to feel like it's slowing you down.'
She said the black-and-white theme of the book was about simplicity, but also about connection.
Tinney is hoping that the film, which is available in English, Irish and Arabic, will resonate with a wide audience.
'The overall idea that I really wanted to come across in the book was of 'one land and one sea', and it's here for sharing, a kind of a universal landscape that could be shared by everybody.
'There was a gorgeous conversation I had with some of the people who did the voiceover in Arabic.
'We were looking at the book one day, and I said 'Does anywhere here make you think of home?'
'Two of the mums, Rasha and Arwa who are from Sudan, started telling the story about the River Nile.
'The idea of the river was making them think of the River Nile, and being under this mountain where the river flows by and there's a woman selling fish freshly caught out of the river.
'And it was just amazing, it's just a class little moment to think, if that can make them feel at home with this imagery, then I feel a real sense of accomplishment in that.'
The film will be shown as part of the Galway Film Fleadh on Sunday 13 July at 12:30pm in Town Hall Theatre.
'I'm just so proud of the film, getting to work with the Arabic speaking families in that way was just amazing, because that's a whole part of the story.
'It's about integration too, and it's about art for all and everybody being able to be a part of this artistic piece of work and that exploration of mother tongue.
'The overall story of the book I always say is a call to come home, it's a mother's call to come home, to come home to Mother Earth.
'I just think it's a nice message, especially in today's world.'
Wildkind is directed by John McDaid, animated by the creative studio Dog Ears, and received funding from Northern Ireland Screen.

Maura Higgins to make comedy debut in movie that is coming to Irish cinemas

Maura Higgins is set to make her comedy debut later this year. The Love Island star is among the cast of the Irish comedy The Spin, a film directed by Michael Head, which debuted at The Belfast Film Festival 2024 but is now coming to cinemas. In the clip, the Longford native is seen laying in bed while another showed her taking a deep breath. On Thursday, The Spin's writer Colin Broderick delivered an update on the movie's cinema release and shared on Instagram that it'll be in Irish cinemas this October. Colin added that opening night will be in Omagh on October 24. The Spin synopsis reads as: "Two down on their luck record store owners, Elvis and Dermott, take a cross country road trip to Cork to acquire a priceless record that could save their failing business and save them from eviction from their evil landlord, Sadie." Maura features alongside a very talented cast that includes The Pussycat Dolls' Kimberly Wyatt, Game of Thrones' Brenock O'Connor and Derry Girls' Tara Lynne O'Neill and Leah O'Rourke. The film's director Michael Head previously shared the premise of the film, saying: "A year back I directed a delightful fun little tale about two loveable idiots in Ireland." He explained it will be "very different to my normal projects but full of heart and charm", adding he is "delighted" that the film has sold out at the Belfast Film Festival. (Image: Getty Images) Speaking to DigitalSpy, Maura spoke about her experience on set: "Being on set was an incredible experience, and I enjoyed every moment! I play the character of Rose, the girlfriend of Dermot, a down-on-his-luck record store owner." "The Irish are known for our storytelling, so it felt fitting that my acting debut would be in an Irish film. "Although I am comfortable in front of the camera, it did still feel nerve-wracking at first, but chatting with the brilliant cast and crew helped me relax." Maura can be seen briefly in the trailer as her character Rose, Brenock O'Connor's on-screen girlfriend. In one scene, Maura's seen lying in a bed looking rather grim and in another she looks concerned as she takes a deep breath with her phone in her hand. BP Fallon on how a film has captured his incredible life in music

The music legend's life is documented in new film about his life and famous pals Both Shane MacGowan and Sinéad are sadly no longer with us, but both are surely there in spirit in a new documentary about the author and musician who's worked with a host of famous names. 'BP Fallon: Rock'n'Roll Wizard' had its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh yesterday, with a veritable who's who featuring in the documentary. Among those talking about their dealings with the Dubliner are Debbie Harry, Adam Clayton, Donovan, Imelda May, Iggy Pop, Bob Geldof, Robert Plant, President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, Joe Elliott, Dr John Cooper Clarke, Glen Matlock, Alan McGee, Louis Walsh, and many more. BP with Willie Nelson The documentary is directed by Dubliner Alan Leonard, produced by Níall Carver for Speed Of Life Films with Alan Leonard and Fiona Graham also producing for Single Cell Films. 'The impetus was Neil Carver, I met him in the Shelbourne by appointment for afternoon tea, and he said he'd like to do a documentary 'on you as a musician',' explains BP, whose initials stand for Bernard Patrick. 'I said, 'Thank you, I'm in'. People would ask me about doing a documentary every couple of weeks. I always said no. But I said yes to this one, because my music would be in it.' Read more 'With this movie I've given them complete access to my photo archive, which is enormous.' Although born in Dublin, BP was schooled in Yorkshire and moved to London in the early 1960s where he got a job in Apple records and was thrust to the epicentre of the musical revolution. Sinéad O Connor and Shane MacGowan He then became a confidant and creative catalyst for some of rock's most iconic artists. At Apple Records, he worked alongside The Beatles before becoming publicist to T. Rex and a key member of Led Zeppelin's legendary inner circle. 'The first time [he met the Beatles] was 1963 in Liverpool. The drummer and the bass player. The bass player [Paul McCartney] signed my Cavern Club membership card and then in put in brackets 'The Beatles' in case I forgot the name of the group he was in. The first time I saw them play was in The Grafton Ballroom in Liverpool, they did two half-hour sets — it was August 1963.' He even got to star on Top of The Pops as part of John Lennon & The Plastic Ono band. 'I mimed bass on Instant Karma and played tambourine on Instant Karma, on two separate occasions,' he smiles. 'What I most remember about John was that he and Yoko were very kind.' BP moved back to Ireland in 1980 and remembers a young U2, who he would later go on tour with and write a book about. 'They were very ambitious,' he recalls. BP with Debbbie Harry On his BF Fallon Orchestra show on RTE Radio 2, which ran for five years in the 1980s, he had a number of firsts. 'I was the first person to play Sinéad on the radio; I was the first person to ever interview her on the radio actually,' he says. 'I was the first person in the world to play Fairytale Of New York on the radio, I was the first person in the world to play The Pogues on the radio.' BP turns 80 in August next year, but is still dreaming up plans. 'I'm putting out another album, putting out a book, lots more things to do,' he says. 'Thank God for life.'
