Oil Holds Decline as Traders Assess Outlook for Russian Supply

Yahoo5 days ago
(Bloomberg) -- Oil held a drop — after slumping by more than 2% on Monday — as US President Donald Trump's latest plan to pressure Russia refrained from immediate new measures aimed at hindering Moscow's energy exports.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate traded near $67 a barrel, while Brent settled near $69 in the previous session. Trump boosted military support for Ukraine to resist Moscow's invasion, and threatened to impose 100% tariffs if the hostilities did not end with a deal in 50 days. The planned action effectively represents secondary sanctions on countries buying oil from Russia, according to Matt Whitaker, the US ambassador to NATO, citing India and China.
Oil has lost about 7% this year, hurt by the fallout from Trump's trade war, signs of demand challenges in top importer China, and moves by OPEC+ to relax supply curbs. Taken together, the headwinds have fanned concern output may run ahead of consumption this half, creating a glut.

Costco locations begin to make the switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola at food courts

Costco's switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola drinks at its food courts is underway. The change at Costco's food courts 'began rolling out across all Costco warehouses' at the beginning of July, The Coca-Cola Company said in a statement to FOX Business. Advertisement All of Costco's food courts will offer Coca-Cola products by the fall. It comes at a time when President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Coca-Cola was going to switch to using cane sugar as a sweetener instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Coca-Cola has neither confirmed nor denied Trump's claim. However, it has thrust the drink maker into a brighter spotlight despite its market dominance. Advertisement The warehouse retailer's change to Coca-Cola beverages may not come as a surprise to members considering Costco CEO Ron Vachris said in January the company would be 'converting our food court fountain business back over to Coca-Cola' this summer. It nonetheless marks a big change for Costco food courts, which had offered Pepsi products since 2013. 'Costco insiders and Coca-Cola fans are buzzing about the transition, which will span warehouses in 14 countries, allowing Costco members everywhere to once again enjoy their favorite Coca-Cola beverages alongside Costco's beloved food court offerings,' Coca-Cola told FOX Business. 3 Costco's food courts have started switching from Pepsi to Coca-Cola. Christopher Sadowski Some social media users have posted photos of Costco food courts to Reddit with a Coca-Cola cup visible in the signage for its popular hot dog and soda combo in recent days. Food courts are one of the many ancillary businesses Costco offers at warehouses along with gas stations, optical departments, hearing aids and tire installation. Costco has said its ancillary businesses encourage members to make trips to the warehouse retailer more often. Vachris said during the company's third-quarter earnings call in late May that it expects to reach 914 locations worldwide by the end of its fiscal year. In August, seven Costco openings are planned, with warehouses launching in Canada, Mexico and the US, according to a page on the retailer's website. Costco will release its fourth-quarter financial results in late September.

What to know about the trial of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro will wear an electronic ankle monitor on orders from the Supreme Court, where he is on trial for allegedly masterminding a coup plot to remain in office despite his defeat in the 2022 election. The case received renewed attention after President Donald Trump directly tied a 50% tariff on Brazilian imported goods to Bolsonaro's judicial situation, which Trump called a ' witch hunt .'

UPS driver buyout offers: Carrier eyes Aug. 31 start to separations

Dive Brief: UPS is offering voluntary buyouts to its full-time U.S. drivers amounting to $1,800 per year of service, with a minimum payout of $10,000, according to an announcement from the carrier Friday. Interested drivers must apply for the program between July 18 and July 31, according to a UPS employee communication viewed by Supply Chain Dive. Applicants will be considered for separation dates between Aug. 31 and Oct. 31 "based on the local needs of the business." "If the maximum number of applications is exceeded, approvals will be granted in seniority order," the communication said. "Additional applications may be considered for separation dates between Feb. 1, 2026, and March 31, 2026." Dive Insight: The undertaking, called the Driver Voluntary Separation Program, is the first in UPS' history for delivery drivers. The financial incentive available through the program is in addition to earned retirement benefits like pension and healthcare, per UPS. Word of the program spread on July 3, when the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union said UPS' buyout plan was in motion. The Teamsters represent more than 300,000 UPS employees under a five-year contract reached in 2023. 'Our members cannot be bought off and we will not allow them to be sold out," Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien said in the union's announcement. "The Teamsters are prepared to fight UPS on every front with every available resource to shut down this illegal buyout program." The union urged members to reject the buyout offers in a LinkedIn post on Friday. UPS did not specify what would happen if a lower-than-expected number of drivers applied for the program. UPS is enacting the buyout program in the midst of a major network overhaul to boost profitability, which will feature several facility closures and an over 50% volume reduction from Amazon, its top customer. The initiative also comes after the carrier revealed plans in April to cut roughly 20,000 U.S. positions this year. "As we work through our network reconfiguration, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing our customers with the reliable, industry-leading service they expect from UPS," the company said in Friday's announcement.
