Iran holds funeral for top commanders, nuclear scientists killed in Israeli operation

Yahoo2 days ago

Iran held a funeral for top military commanders and nuclear scientists killed during the country's 12-day war with Israel.
Among those mourned were Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief Gen. Hossein Salami and the head of the IRGC's ballistic missile program, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, according to the Associated Press. The outlet reported that funeral attendees lining the streets of Tehran shouted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."
On June 13, the day Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, the IDF announced the deaths of Salami, Hajizadeh, and the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya (Emergency Command), Gholam-Ali Rashid. The following day, Israel claimed it had killed nine senior nuclear scientists and more than 20 Iranian commanders.

The caskets were draped in Iranian flags and adorned with photos of the deceased. Large trucks carried the on-display coffins through the heart of Tehran as crowds dressed in black and waved flags. The turnout could signal that the regime's internal crackdown is having an impact, as the people of Iran rush to mourn their leaders.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior figures attended the funeral, but notably absent was Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has yet to make a public appearance since going into hiding.

Reports indicate that since the war with Israel ended, Iran has focused on an internal security crackdown. There have been reports of mass arrests and even executions of those accused of espionage on behalf of Israel.
"The regime convicts and imposes the death penalty based on trumped-up charges to spread terror among the Iranians. Meanwhile, Israel's Operation Rising Lion has helped the public realize that the Iranian regime is a paper tiger that is weaker than ever," Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) Senior Iran and Financial Economics Advisor Saeed Ghasseminejad said in a statement.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said Monday that 705 individuals had been arrested in Iran on "political or security-related charges."
This report was echoed by Islamic Republic-run Fars News Agency, which said that 700 were detained for allegedly working with Israel.
Nonprofit Iran Human Rights (IHR) warned that at least six others on death row for allegedly spying for Israel are at risk of execution. The organization also said that at least nine individuals have been executed this year on similar charges.Original article source: Iran holds funeral for top commanders, nuclear scientists killed in Israeli operation

Turkey detains cartoonists over satirical drawing allegedly depicting prophets

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish authorities on Monday detained three cartoonists over a satirical drawing published by weekly magazine Leman that seemed to depict Prophets Moses and Muhammad shaking hands in the sky, while missiles flew below in a scene resembling war. The cartoon, widely seen as a commentary on religious harmony in contrast to conflict on Earth, drew strong condemnation from government officials and religious conservatives. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya shared a video on X showing police officers detaining cartoonist Dogan Pehlevan and dragging him up the stairs of a building with his hands cuffed behind his back. "I once again curse those who try to sow discord by drawing caricatures of our Prophet Muhammad," Yerlikaya wrote. "The individual who drew this vile image, D.P., has been apprehended and taken into custody. These shameless people will be held accountable before the law." Yerlikaya later posted two other videos, showing two other men being laid on the ground and forcibly taken from their homes, as policemen dragged them into vans - one of them walking barefoot. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said an investigation had been launched under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code, which criminalises incitement to hatred and enmity, and that detention orders had been issued for six people in total. In its statement on X, the Leman magazine apologised to readers who felt offended and said the cartoon had been misunderstood. It said Pehlevan had sought to highlight "the suffering of a Muslim man killed in Israeli attacks", and that there was no intent to insult Islam or its prophet. "The name Muhammad is among the most widely used in the world by Muslims honoring the Prophet. The cartoon does not depict the Prophet and was not drawn to mock religious values," the magazine said, calling some interpretations "deliberately malicious." Leman also urged judicial authorities to act against what it called a smear campaign, and asked security forces to protect freedom of expression. Earlier in the evening, video footage on social media showed a group of protesters marching to Leman's office building in central Istanbul, chanting slogans and kicking its entrance doors. Turkey's ranking for freedom of expression is consistently low, reflecting significant restrictions on media and public discourse. Reporters Without Borders ranks Turkey 158th out of 180 countries in its 2024 Press Freedom Index.

Far-left actor John Cusack says Iran 'should get' nukes to protect Middle East from US and Israel

Anti-Israel and anti-Trump actor John Cusack expressed hope last Friday that Iran will get a nuclear weapon. In a post shared to X, the actor said Iran should get a nuclear weapon so that it can deter the U.S. and Israel's aggression in the Middle East. "Iran will surely rush to get a nuclear weapon- and they should get one," he wrote, adding, "it's the only way to deter US and Israel from bombing every country in Middle East." Cusack published his post almost a week after President Donald Trump ordered U.S. military strikes on three major Iranian facilities believed to be developing nuclear weapons. Long-range B-2 stealth bomber aircraft dropped 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on the locations on June 21 in an attack that Trump called "a spectacular military success." Cusack has been harshly critical of Israel's actions in its war in Gaza and war with Iran on social media. Prior to posting support for Iran getting nukes, he appeared to suggest that U.S. support for Israel meant the country was supporting a "genocidal" regime. He wrote, "Blind allegiance for Israel is alliance to a genocidal regeme[sic] - it's a nation state - run [by] a murderous gangster - not some fixed star." Earlier, he posted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been killing innocent children, and he accused the U.S. of being complicit. The actor also condemned both countries for recent strikes in Lebanon. "Isreal [sic] bombs Lebanon! [W]ell they can't have any days when they are not illegally bombing someone while US grovels," he wrote. Additionally, Cusack posted that democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayoral Democratic primary was a "f--- you to billionaires, dem establishment, and the genocide in Gaza - the bombing of Iran." And in a post from last Wednesday, Cusack accused Israeli soldiers of murdering innocent Palestinians seeking aid and blasted Democratic Party figures for not speaking out about it. "The fact that so many in the dem party will not speak out and work every day to stop this genocide - Should haunt them for the rest of their lives - and end their political careers," he wrote in part.
