Mohali mayor slams AAP govt for delay in solid waste project at Samgoli
Addressing a press conference, Sidhu said the issue had become critical for the health and sanitation of Mohali residents. 'The city generates over 150 tonnes of waste daily, while the current waste management contract only covers 100 tonnes. As a result, garbage piles are accumulating across several locations, spreading foul odour and posing serious health risks,' he said.
'Mohali currently has no official dumping ground. Waste is being dumped at random garbage collection points. People are living in miserable, unhygienic conditions, while the government is preoccupied with political theatrics,' he added.
Sidhu also responded to a recent statement by local MLA Kulwant Singh regarding the land allocated to MC for a dumping ground at Samgoli. 'Out of 50 acres, 39 acres have been acquired and a boundary wall worth ₹35 lakh has been constructed. However, the remaining 11 acres are stuck with the revenue department due to bureaucratic delays,' the mayor said.
He further revealed that a ₹27-crore biogas plant was proposed at the site, with project reports already prepared by firms like HPCL and GAIL, following detailed surveys. The project, to be implemented under the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Corporation (PMIDC), had been awaiting clearance at the head office since March 2025, he claimed.
'This is not just Mohali's project—it can serve the entire GMADA region, including Dera Bassi, Banur, Lalru, Nayagaon and Zirakpur. Yet, the project continues to be ignored,' Sidhu remarked.
He also pointed out that there was currently no access road to the site. Although the rural development and panchayati raj department has issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for constructing a ₹29-crore road, no work had started on the ground.
Appealing to the Punjab government, Sidhu urged, 'This is a public-interest project and should not be turned into a political tool. The government must act swiftly to save the people of Mohali from the growing menace of garbage, stench and disease.

Sippy Sharma, from the group of 646 unemployed physical training instructors (PTI) who have been waiting for jobs since 2011, was also put under house arrest at her residence in Mansa. Sippy said, "Initially, police visited the area in Mansa where I live and returned after they failed to locate my residence. They also reached my mother's residence in Mansa, asking her to stop me from going to Sunam. The police reached my residence in the morning and stopped me from going out, even preventing me from going to the hospital," said Sippy, who is six months pregnant. Punjab Becomes First State To Launch Evidence-Based Anti-Drug Curriculum For Students
Chandigarh, Punjab, July 31: Punjab is set to take a new step in its fight against drugs by launching India's first evidence-based anti-drug curriculum for school students. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will inaugurate the program on August 1 in Arniwala, Fazilka, as part of the third phase of the state's "Yudh Nashian De Virudh" campaign. School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the curriculum will cover around 8 lakh students from Classes 9 to 12 in 3,658 schools. More than 6,500 trained teachers will deliver the programme. The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Prof. Abhijit Banerjee's J-PAL South Asia and leading behavioural scientists. It aims to equip students with the skills to avoid drug use and make informed decisions. The 27-week program consists of 35-minute interactive sessions held every two weeks. It uses documentaries, quizzes, posters, and group activities to bust myths, address peer pressure, and promote better decision-making strategies. Randomised trials conducted in 78 government schools in Amritsar and Tarn Taran with 9,600 students showed a strong impact. Ninety per cent of students understood that even trying drugs like "chitta" once could lead to addiction, compared to 69 per cent in the control group. The belief that addiction can be overcome with willpower alone dropped from 50 per cent to 20 per cent. Bains said this marked a shift in approach, stating, "The fight against drugs must begin in classrooms, not just in police stations." He added that more than 23,000 drug smugglers have been arrested so far, over 1,000 kg of heroin has been seized, and properties of offenders have been confiscated, highlighting the government's commitment to protect Punjab's youth from drug abuse. Punjab has become the first Indian state to roll out an anti-drug curriculum at this scale, starting from August 1. The programme focuses on prevention through interactive classroom learning and behavioural change.
